Fire
on: February 03, 2021, 17:16:13
Hey all, been hammering away at this one for a few weeks now and I finally made a breakthrough yesterday with the arrangement and melodies.  I really like this one now after nearly scrapping the whole thing a few days ago.  This song reads as if its about a dark, sexual relationship but its really about arguing with people on facebook haha.

Im not totally sold on the mix yet so any thoughts you have on that or anything else is welcome and great appreciated.

Lyrics:

Innocense was just a cunning play
it burned a mark on me that wont go away
sweet candy outer shell that hides a dark surprise
An angel on the surface but a devil in disguise

her love is so divine
it makes me lose my mind
I cant resist it
I cant resist it
She feeds me looks that kill
my will is built to spill
I cant resist it
I cant resist it
Im on fire

She draws me deeper like the pull from a drug
my downward spiral is swept beneath the rug
I feel the tension building up inside of me
but my own weakness is what I cannot see

Yes, a very good song indeed. I agree with @Dutchbeat that it has a RHCP flavour, but I'm also thinking Alice in Chains. No further remixing necessary, I'd say. A song is never done, you will always hear things in it that you feel you should have done better, later. Then just do that later.
Pleudoniem: composer; bass guitarist; guitarist; singer; drummer; tap-guitarist - o, and yes... erm- a bit of keys. Open for collabs.

@Dutchbeat @Pleudoniem  I wasnt thinking RHCP at any point during my work on this (frankly I dont think of any other artist period when I write), but I can certainly hear the influence now that you mention it.  Im a huge fan of Blood Sugar Sex Magic and 90s rock in general so those bands will always come through.  My friend dropped Lenny Kravitz as a comp too and I can hear that one as well.

As far as the mix goes, its just very minor tweaks Im thinking of.  On one of the high harmony parts, I want to bring it out a little more because I think it ties the whole part together.  Also think that the lead vocal is a touch thin so Ill probably swap EQs for something warmer.  Then again, I may not do any of that lol

So, I reckon that when people think of RCHP when they listen to you, it makes sense.

I don't think anybody is looking to copy any artist when they write. Thing is that what they do just it happens to remind their listeners of other artists they know. I'm not sure that this always feels very natural. For instance, if they compared me to King Crimson and Robert Fripp, yes, I'd agree. But I have been compared to Steely Dan and Talking Heads quite a bit as well, although I'd never listened to Steely Dan before when this comparison was first made. Also, some of the artists I listen to are never mentioned in the reviews. I'm sure you know Alice in Chains though :)

@Knate  - outstandingly cool and  brilliant!!
 :pompom:
 @Dutchbeat , @Pleudoniem and @Pleudoniem 's praise iss well deseverd.
I add mine too - I wouldn't change a thing to the mix. If you liek a comp from my neck of the woods - I'd say Living Colour - timeless strong songs.

I mean, I think maybe people do have an idea of what kind of song they want to write when they start writing a tune.  I certainly used to be that way.  But my writing got better and more creative when I just let the song decide what it wanted be jnstead of making it what I wanted.

Thats just my personal experience though so I cant speak anyone else

Yes!!!  Living Colour makes total sense!  I wish I could play like Vernon Reid!

Thank you!

That’s why music is fun @Knate
Everybody hears something else.
I can totally understand living colour, but what I hear most of all is shoegaze with the vocals on top of the mix.
Love it!
Kind regards, Gus

And you prove the point again @LePlongeur, namely that listeners tend to compare, especially when their musical library is extensive enough. I think that's just what we do, and that is quite alright. @Knate will still be @Knate, even if he listens to other artists. You will be you, but we don't live in vacuums (even in Corona times). There is another band that this song made me think of, namely Gotcha!
