Fixed chord comp song: The Softening - WIP
on: May 16, 2015, 00:48:51
« Last Edit: May 22, 2015, 00:44:20 by Zedd »
Hi Guys...

I've been struggling with moving forward with a few of my songs at the moment so I'm posting this very much WIP song for feedback on the song...

So please go easy on the production - it's fairly crap as I have no experience in this area so i've done a simple drum track, simple midi organ and a few bvs to give the idea of the song but nothing else.. I'd like to put some tremolo guitar on it in the chorus but I haven't managed that yet.. And bass.... Edited to say I've just listened to it again - it's a bit "flat" as in lacking in energy... so still needs a lot of work...

This was inspired by the fixed chord comp but I couldn't sing it in the key I wrote it in, so I think it's automatically disqualified as it's now in a completely different key, albeit with the same chord structure...

Feedback please..

The Softening

Verse 1:
Why do you have those hard edges
Who hurt you so?
The world is full of angry faces
Time to let it go

Chorus:
Wipe the board clean
Lay down your guard
Let this be your softening
Edges no longer hard

Verse 2:
Bitter pill swallowed whole
No need for more
Step slowly forward
Don't stop when you pass go

Chorus:
Wipe the board clean
Lay down your guard
Let this be your softening
Edges no longer hard

Bridge:
Trust what you see and what you hear
The words are real
Give yourself a chance to find out
What you really feel
You hold the future in your hands
You have the cards to deal
Just lay them out without a doubt
And set yourself free

Beautiful lyrics Z, and I can hear how it's going to sound when recorded well. Respect!! A while ago I read a 'spreuk' as we call it in the Netherlands:

'The best day in your life is the one on which you decide that your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. And you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins'.

Are you sending out the same message?
I'm proud of this track, check it out! https://soundcloud.com/martimedia/dreams

I am, sort of MM....

You can make your own destiny if you put down your baggage - that what you mean? And yes, today is day 1 if you do that... Spot on as we say - glad the message is understandable.. Now to get the auditory message to match  :) :)

Thanks for the feedback...

Ow and Z, In my opinion you still qualify for the DB 4 chords challenge... unless DB was serious about using 4 absolute chords. Your cohesion between the chords is still the same, it's all relative. I'm sure DB appreciates you taking this challenge and delivering more than come up with nothing ;-)

Yes that's exactly what I mean! The surprising thing is that your message tends to be trying to influence your environment, but I think in the end you'll find this 'spreuk' to be really wise. Again, respect for these lyrics and for you contributing!

Hi Zedd,

As you'd expect, the downbeat nature of this totally appeals to me. It has a nice dark quality - and i can hear those tremolo or reverby guitars you mention - something along the lines of Portishead or perhaps Chris Isaak. I like the slightly hypnotic vocal style.

Will be interesting to hear how this develops.

what a beautiful chorus! a very nice song all round. I like the arangment with the drum too

and in my infinite wisdom  ;D ;D ;D ;D, i have decided that your song is allowed to compete for the fixed four chords song challenge...(see MM's comment, i follow his reasoning here)

only thing i have to comment, and i should in fact be the last one to make this comment  ;D ;D ;D ;D, but i think the reverb on the main vocal is a bit too much, especially in the verses

great songwriting once again, Zedd!!!!! (karma)

Thanks for the feedback. Still v raw and having just listened to some of the other tracks here, I probably should step away from the production stuff. But insanity is making me persevere with this one  :o.

Yes I did go a little heavy on the reverb. I'm going to Rerecord the vocal later I hope with a proper mic. I'll bin the bvs - the low ones completely but I'll probably do something along the lines of the higher bv again but not so crap 👀!!

It also Prob needs an instrumental break somewhere...

Anyway I hope to be able to post another vs soon.

Thanks for letting me into the comp with my rule breaker !!

You're welcome! Yeah that's the spirit! Where did you upload new mixes? Of this song? Yes I know it is time consuming. Recording and mixing my latest track took me a couple of weeks! I learned that taking the time really helps, not only for the result, but also for the fun factor. Do you hate recording and mixing? MM

Where? On Soundcloud - same link, new mixes. They might not sound so different but they have guitar in there too now....

Yes I really don't enjoy recording and mixing. I just want to write! But I understand that's not enough on its own so I have to take the songs at least a couple or three steps further. I also hope that I get into arranging....

i agree with Marti, when he says

......Yes I know it is time consuming. Recording and mixing my latest track took me a couple of weeks! I learned that taking the time really helps, not only for the result, but also for the fun factor. Do you hate recording and mixing? MM

i thought it was the only one for whom it takes ages to mix/ remix a track....i am working on a remix of a track of Fischermans, made a rather extensive remix with synths etc, but when trying to mix it down.....for a while i think i am almost there and then it sort of looks like the mix 'escapes'....i rendered the mix anyway yesterday but listening to it today i can tell it is not good....i somewhere made a wrong turn...and to be honest it sounds really terrible what i rendered  ;D ;D ;D ;D, so i am not going to upload that, but i know that i can make it better when returning to it with 'fresh' ears later on.....

so yes it takes time, unless i guess for some professionals who know exactly what they are doing

good luck with getting those mixes down, Zedd!!!!

Thanks DB and MM!

I haven't had a chance to look at the mix since I added in the guitars... Suspect my final "submission" will still be fairly raw but this my learning to mix project too  :) :)
