Ghost In The Wires - Challenge
on: September 22, 2019, 13:53:48
So I seem to have channeled the ghosts of a few rockers in the making of this song.

First Gregg Allman stopped by to tell me that he didn't mind if I blatantly ripped off one of his most famous keyboard riffs.

Then Tom Petty showed up and said, "Hey, man! Don't bore us.....get to the chorus".

The third guy just came and stepped all over the nice tidy ending I had going. I think you'll figure out who he is if you get to the end of the song.

Anyway, this tune is called:

Ghost In The Wires
https://www.soundclick.com/html5/v4/player.cfm?songID=13924007

CHORUS
I thought you were near
But all I've been hearing is
Your ghost in the wires
That's not your voice
It's just the wind making noise
All of these years
It's been coming in clear
And feeding my fire
Your ghost in the wires

INSTRUMENTAL

V1
I still see your face
And that little smile
No one can replace you
And even after all the while
I give in
And listen for the wind

CHORUS
I know you're not near
And all I am hearing is
Your ghost in the wires
And that's not your voice
It's just the wind making noise
After all these years
And so many tears
l never get tired
Of your ghost in the wires

V2
I still keep this place
Even after all this time
'Cause nothing can erase
This feeling that you're still mine
Even after all these years
Eveb after all these years

CHORUS
I know you're not near
And what I am hearing is
Your ghost in the wires
That's not just noise
I know it's your voice
I have no fear
'Cause I hear you clearly
And I'll never get tired
Of your ghost in the wires

Your ghost in the wires
Your ghost in the wires
It's your ghost in the wires
It's your ghost in the wires
It's not just the wind

And the wind, it cries.....Mary.......

Hi @Leonard Scaper  you got a pretty nice groove happening in this one! I like thge lyrics very much. It's almost like a polyrhythmic counterpoint the way the lyrics move in opposition to the organ and the string strumming. It's kind of unsettling ...... probably as a ghost song should be. Hendrix at the end was cool.
Good show!

Hi @Leonard Scaper

Wow!  I love your sound!!!

And that organ !!! The organs drive me crazy, they always give such a special atmosphere,

A lot of colors, you are right I recognize Gregg Allman and Tom Petty style...

Wonderful guitar and wonderful lyrics, poetic lyrics....

Congratulations, your song is so well constructed!!!!  :pompom: ::thumb::

I like the images and sounds you conjure with that evocative title line @Leonard Scaper .The organ is excellent ( your playing?) and the guitar break works.
Thinking of the drama Hendrix knew how to bring in spades... I thought the percussion could have come in earlier.
Good to hear you channeling those rock icons ::thumb::

@Leonard Scaper A very interesting rhythmical interaction between the organ, the vocal and the guitar. That voice is so typically you. It sounds a little insecure at times, but there is no need to doubt your singing.

I like the idea of making rock icon spirits come to life again, a bit like what The Pasadenas did in Tribute, although the genre is quite different.

Hey @Bill from November Sound .......I appreciate that about the polyrhythmic counterpoint. I wish I could say I did that purposely.  ;D Yeah....it did feel like a good groove.

@Mora Amaro La Loba .....thank you, Mora, for your appreciation.  :)

@robertkc ......yes, I played that organ. It just felt like the right thing after I recorded the acoustic guitar part. Actually, those congas are in there from the beginning. I spent a lot of time nudging them around to sit tight....maybe too tight?

@Pleudoniem ...... Thanks for appreciating that interaction. I was happy with it myself. No worries about me and my singing, my friend.......I've been singing my stuff for a very, very long time. The vocal session for this one was actually quite strong. I knew how I wanted it to sound and I was feeling really good about what I was doing.

That indeed could be the case @Dutchbeat .......my hearing has begun to deteriorate in my right ear a bit more than my left. I work in mono a lot to compensate and I watch my meters as well for balance. I did want that organ to be strong, though.

Thanks for that observation....I'll take another look at that balance.

before taking my comment seriously  ;D ;D ;D

@Leonard Scaper  - sounding fresh. Wonderfully sung, and superb lyrics. If you are reconsidering the mix, the organ might get some reverb, and a bit of panning to the right or left. But that is a detail.

@Dutchbeat and @oorlab .....I split the stereo mix track into mono tracks and they were exactly the same gain...go figure. But with perception being everything, I massaged that organ track with some volume automation at parts that were sticking out.

Then, thanks to that excellent suggestion from @oorlab, I added in some of the plate reverb that I had on the electric guitar to the room verb that was already on the organ....and panned that plate far left.

It sounds SO much better now. I have never used the organ quite like this....thanks to you both.

Hey @Lane ....thanks for that appreciation, especially about the arrangement. Starting off with the chorus like that just felt right.

I am still hung up on my Soundclick site.....been there for so long, way before Soundcloud. I posted it on Soundcloud now as well. Here's that link:

Hi @Leonard Scaper

I had forgotten to tell you that your song  has a very authentic dramatic sense that has impressed me. I love this line

"That's not your voice
It's just the wind making noise"

What a fuller feeling of all finally the time comes!!  ::thumb:: ::thumb::

Heyy! :)

I love the way this starts, very strong setting, and cool riffs. I really like your singing melody, particularly in the first chorus. Great sounding vocal and nice blend of sounds :)
