Ghost of Judy
on: September 07, 2019, 12:53:40

Last week I upgraded from Windows 7 to 10, and am still in compatability hell, with many weird ghostly behaviour of the machine. May be I share some details later - but for now, I thank the muses for guiding me through the maze to get the track up.
As usual I warmly welcome comments and ideas for new versions. Happy to share credits too.

Have you seen the ghost of Judy,
Roaming in the park?
She learned her lines, did her duty
but somehow lost her spark.

Haunted by fame and stardom,
 - that cruel machine -
Left her out, in the cold
and treated her so mean.

Can you spare a thought for Judy?
She still needs to be loved.
Will she rise and find some freedom
in heavens up above?

Eternal curse
that pulled her under,
no-one could escape
the fog that hangs
over this land,
paints a dreadful shape.

Don't you gaze
into those eyes
that follow you through the street:
the wanting, yearning,
most brokenhearted
girl you could ever meet.

Say a prayer
for the ghost of Judy
She might be redeemed

And in her next
She may start out clean.

@oorlab I just met Judy, she was so beautiful and and so charming, but there was fear in her eyes, stuck as if she was hoping to remember a smile but was unable to. I recognised her immediately, but I'm not sure if she could hear what I said to her. It may sound peculiar, but in her case, I believe in ghosts.

Strong images in the opening verse @oorlab and I like the way you make to message more universal in the last verse.
There`s a nice dynamic when the fiddle breaks come in - I hope you keep those if you make this more "modern"
I wish I knew more about the music of Judy`s time-maybe there would be some way to hint at that in another arrangement, though I enjoy the simple folk sound here.
Is this your Ghostly Challenge entry?

Cheers @Pleudoniem -  next time you see Judy say hello. Her story is tragic - a victim of fame & film industry pressure.
@Dutchbeat  - indeed the pizzicatos and bowed parts are all played in the same track and mic position. I did some post editing to level the levels.
@robertkc - thanks for the feedback. The first verse presented itself when I read somewhere about a new film with Renée Zellweger playing Garland. Also one ingredient of inspiration is the old "Have you seen the ghost of Tom" - which is a small nursery rhyming song the choir I sing in uses as a warm up canon.

This song was born to enter the challenge @oorlab   !!!! When celebrities die engulfed by their shadow ... Beautiful lyrics and beautiful poetic way to soften oblivion.

Forgive me for telling you this but right at the beginning of the song I noticed something strange, as if there was a clash of sounds or time ...
I did not know that to live I had to die so many times

I really like the character of this track....that violin is perfect played both ways.

Good writing here both musically and lyrically and as @Lane mentioned, the ending really works dynamically in the way it builds.

Cheers @Leonard Scaper ;
Pas du tout @Mora Amaro La Loba  - these comments about possible strange things in the recording, mix etc. is most helpful. You mean possibly the dissonant piano in the intro? That was sort of coincidental but I left it in to heigthen the spooky atmosphere. Or was there something in the rhythm?

Hi @oorlab

Very Steely Dan to a lot of this but the violin gives it a unique sound.

I like your vocals - almost story telling but still melodic.

The ending is wonderful.

I enjoyed this lot. The strings sound real, clever vocal melody, earthy instrumentation. Great job!

@oorlab ,

Strong story telling nicely complimented by the instrumental, fitting perfectly with the theme of the challenge. I really like the choice of instruments, very interesting mix of sounds. I particularly like the strings section – it is sounding amazing! :)

Love this. Fiddle amazing. Great lyrics. To me this could have been a song in the film The Wckerman.

'Ghost Story' - new song inspired by the ghost in my house!
