Glass Half Full ( Blues Collaboration )
on: June 28, 2019, 01:33:44
« Last Edit: June 28, 2019, 01:41:17 by MrBouzouki »
I needed a break from all the orchestral stuff I've been doing recently, so I thought I'd finish off a song idea I had as a result of listening to an instrumental track by my old SoundCloud mate Al.

Nothing like a bit of blues to reset myself. ;-)

Just my lyrics and voice on this one on top of a guitar noodle of Al's.

================================================================

Every now and then you need to get back to your roots musically, and for me it's the blues.

Being able to write an effective blues song, with minimal instrumentation, is an important songwriting skill. Well I reckon this one is effective, thanks largely to the inspiring acoustic blues guitar playing by my old SoundCloud mate, Big Al (Blues-Meister par excellence).

I heard this backing of Al's a a while ago and I've finally got around to putting down a vocal take that does it justice.

Please make sure you check out Al's music, especially if Blues is your thing.

Lyrics

Glass Half Full

Staring at a glass, half full
Trying to drown my pain
Since you wen'na away

Never understood you girl,
And all those tears you cried,
Crying in the night
You were crying in the night

Take another drink, it helps
To keep me rolling on
Down this lonely road

Never understood you girl,
and how my words could hurt
Hurting you everyday
Hurting you everyday
Hurting you

Have another sip, it burns
Just like the pain I feel
Deep in this heart of mine

Never understood you girl,
and what you meant to me,
until you walked away
until you walked away

Still staring at a glass, half full
And wondering where you are
And how far away
How far away from me

Ohh so far away
Far away from me

Oooo oooo oooo oooo
Ohhh ohh ohhh ohh ohh

I'm still staring ...
At that glass

Hi @MrBouzouki

Always nice to hear some blues and I agree it's an important skill to write and play blues. It's a simple concept but not so easy to make it sound good.

You've picked a good subject for a blues song and I can hear the anguish in the vocals.

I actually really like it when you almost speak the vocals - eg at around 45 seconds. It suits the song and the idea of someone nursing their drink in a dark corner.

The guitar sounds great - your mate Al has done a great job. Nice interesting playing which doesn't get repetitive.

cheers

Lots of hurt in your vocal @MrBouzouki and a nice ebb and flow to the song. Your guitarist sounds very good.
I`m as unbluesy as a songwriter can be, but can relate to your  "reset" intention- and enjoyed  this unplugged and vulnerable song.

Great blues heartbreak tune!

Cheers @robertkc ... I enjoyed 'emoting' in this one. A fancy way of saying 'I think I connected'  ;-)

Cheers @Jurgen , Al is a great guy. He came off SoundCloud after getting spammed by idiots. He's back now but under the radar, hence the 'Big Al' moniker.

He used to do a regular song thing and he is just getting back to doing collaborative stuff again. This was one I was setting up just around the time he came off so it's nice to deliver it now and it's a chance to get back to 'my core' so to speak.

I must admit I love taking an instrumental and taking it somewhere else entirely. Hearing that melody in your head, then writing words, then donig a performance is a special thing to do. Most of my song collabs happen this way.
