Good Men Gone
on: March 17, 2018, 22:08:36

Hi everyone!

Thought I'd share 'Good Men Gone' with you - its my take on modern society....feels like we've lost something along the way?

Demo taken from my debut album 'Polestar' produced by Marty Hailey (check out @mth013 on soundcloud) to be released soon. This is an unmastered/unmixed version, comments welcome!

Good Men Gone

He’s marking time with women and wine, that’s how he rolls,
Not a hair out of place, its all in good taste, that’s what he’s told,
And those Midnight Molly’s as they pull their trolleys through the mall,
And the Shopaholics, they empty their pockets, it’s just a craze.

Oh where have all the good men gone?
They mend our dreams,
They stitch us up at the seams again.

Back street brawlers in neon corners, watch your back!
Moonlight lookers, midnight traders of the flesh,
And those TV flunkies, they dance like monkeys on the stage,
And the welfare junkies, they count their money in the rain.

Oh where have all the good men gone?
They’ve left our town, they’ve hung their heads in shame, in shame,
Oh where have all the good men gone?
They feed on our souls,
They break our bones,
but they’re all we have.

They feed on our souls,
They break our bones,
but they’re all we have.

and I’m calling all the pioneer men to account,
and I’m counting on the best of us to save the day, to save the day!
And will the brave men come to our call?
Or will they fade into the night?
And when the questions asked,
will we rise up last or take up.. the fight, oh take up the fight?

Oh where have all the good men gone?
They’ve hung their hats in a different town today, today,
Oh where have all the good men gone?
They mend our dreams,
They stitch us up at the seams again,
They mend our dreams,
They stitch us up at the seams again.

Oh where have all the good men gone?
They’ve left our town, they’ve hung their heads in shame, in shame,

Oh where have all the good men gone?
They feed on our souls,
They break our bones,
but they’re all we have.

They feed on our souls,
They break our bones,
but they’re all we have!

I hope you enjoy!

James

Hey @Polestar ...Welcome to The Kitchen!!! Listening to your song right now. Interesting stuff.....love the vocals at the start and how you swing into the song from there. This is really good. Seriously well written, produced and performed.

You're going to find lots of like minded folks here so look around at some of the other threads. Leave a comment and folks will return the favor.

Hey @Polestar , I'm very interested in these lyrics.  :)
Is it the good men that
Quote
...feed on our souls,
...break our bones,
but they’re all we have!
?
Or, rather, is this what is happening to the good men?

Hey @Bill from November Sound ...great question. I read it as...we are the good men and our bones have been broken.

Thanks for taking the time to listen to my song and your comments! The Good Men is as much about ourselves as a rerference to a ‘strong leader’ Or religious figure. It’s about he good, strong part of ourselves. The ‘feed on our souls, break our bones lyric’ is about the idea that doing the right thing, staying on the right path is often the hardest thing to do. It takes it out of us, but it is best and the only way. We’ve lost that somewhere along the way. That’s the way I see it!

Welcome to the Kitchen @Polestar

An interesting song and lyric. I must admit not to be overly impressed with the intro section. Much better when the Fx disappears IMHO. Listened to on my monitors and headphones and I'm not really keen.
It's just a bit too distorted for me sorry. You've got a good voice and you don't hear it from the start which is a shame.

I thinking I'm getting a Kinks (Ray Davis-like) like vibe from this track. Nice use of brass, and woodwind too, as a counterpoint to the guitar strum.  It has a nice loose feel that just sort of rolls along.
The little breaks in the pattern makes you focus in on the the lyric at those points. It's a bit of a anti-climax ending for me. I was wanting a pay-off or the not popular these days 'fade-out' but it just seemed to run
out of steam at the end.

Don't think these comments of mine are really negative, it's more my impressions about an already good song, what I like about it,and what I'm not so keen on. As always everything is subjective with this songwriting lark. ;-)

Good job overall and this is a pre-final mix version

Some really valid points  there MrBouzouki - I'm also not particularly happy with the intro myself but my producer completely disagrees - he says it takes the song on a journey which I like, I just don't like the over distorted sound effect he's used! I'm thinking about keeping the intro clean like the rest of the song, but at the same time, I do like the idea he's trying to get across. Maybe there's a happy medium. I might try a fade out at the end or something different. I get where you're coming from. Thanks again though, some great comments, that's how you learn and get better!

Cheers

James
