Great Big Things - Special
on: December 11, 2016, 23:32:27
Hey guys,

Here's a song I wrote and recorded a while ago, but i recently decided to remaster/cleanup a bit. Eventually i'd love to record it with a real guitar and everything.

https://soundcloud.com/great-big-things/special

Let me know what you think, let me know if you have any idea how i can improve it :)

Cheers,
Joe

sounds great to me too @GreatBigThings. For me it all is is in good balance, the instruments, the drum and the voice which is beautiful

no ideas for how to improve it, sounds good  ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb:: Nice song, and I like how it builds.

Hi @GreatBigThings,

Full speed ahead, I'd say.

I don't see anything I'd change. Others can speak more to the musicality.

Hi,

Thanks for sharing your track. I love the lyrics of this song, especially the line ‘but we’re broken in our own perfect ways’.  In general I like how you treat the lyrics in your songs  – almost fragmented notes but well chosen with strong imagery… and you still retain full interest even when you have whole repeated chunks. In this case the lyrics are perhaps the strongest point of the song.

The track is nicely composed in your characteristic style (I would recognize a song of yours because you have a very distinctive way of building it up). I like how you make use of a relatively simple melody throughout and build the song round it – it has a very effective result. The strings/piano work really well with the words in this case and create the perfect atmosphere for the theme. The vocal is really good and the ‘oohs’ together with the higher piano notes are very effective in the ‘You’re special’ section.

To be honest for me this song is sounding perfect as is and I wouldn’t add/change  anything else. However, I leave any additional guidance regarding mastering / production in the hands of the other other more knowledgeable kitcheners as I’m not really into that realm of songwriting.

@GreatBigThings Quite a talent aren't you sir? I love the marriage of lyric and melody. So fragile. So simple. So beautiful. So human. You had me at the first line. There is a beautiful delicacy to this whole track. And by the way your singing on this is something else.

Hi @GreatBigThings,

Okay. Disregard my comment on musicality, for the least part.

I find myself not agreeing with @Rachel_D, entirely.

Perhaps a bit more darkness? Cello? A counterpoint to perfection?

But just a suggestion. Something to accentuate the reality of being broken.

Later,
Stan

The music is fine, and I think I like that you've left it pure and simple, not overloaded with layers of sound and intrumentation...

But the lyrics are GREATTTT!

Hats off gentlemen!  ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb::

I can't offer any suggestions @GreatBigThings - it sounds like another of your really professional sounding tracks.

Great voice, builds well to a quiet piece and then finishes strongly.

Very accomplished.

cheers

Jurgen has said what I wanted to say @GreatBigThings so rather than try and say it slightly differently I'll just +1 his comment!

Great stuff... really enjoyed it...

Hi Joe ! This is a catchy hit ! You have a great and distinctive voice and the production is perfect, just to talk about possible things to do, personnaly i would have chosen a softer synth sound (less acid ....) and add a trumpet for the last minute behind this beautiful chorus  ;)

@GreatBigThings what a fantastic song. The music track would benefit from live instruments and a more organic / old sounding mix. The lyrics are moving and I would listen to the song as is without complaint. But for a track with so much promise I think it would be very popular if the production is taken up a notch or two.
