Guiding Light
on: December 20, 2019, 03:16:13

This past week we celebrated our daughter's first birthday. I wanted to make something for her the best way i know how. Something she would hopefully cherish when she grows up. I can't explain how much she's given me direction and a greater sense of purpose. Here's to many more years. Love Dadda

What to say, Neil. This is just very, very beautiful. From the first note and word to the last. Wonderful production as well. Man, I wouldn't know how to express love for your daughter in a better way. The lyrics are easy to follow but please add them to your entry.
If you dig it, do it. If you dig it a lot, do it twice (Jim Croce).

Fantastic production @Neal . This piece will be there for her when she gets old enough to appreciate it.

There is SO much wisdom in these lyrics for her....and so much more.

"The main thing is to have a gutsy approach....but use your head." Julia Child

"In a world of robotic conformity, the only originality left in music is the imperfections" Eric Craptone

"Special thanks to Steve Gleason for making me who I am today." Leonard Scaper

Wow! This is simply beautiful. The intent, the lyrics, the message, the vocals (both at chorus/ verses), the harmonies, the instrumental (including the nicely sounding guitar at the end), the arrangement are brilliant! Great quality songwriting and production throughout :)
You bring to mind 'The Script'.... I really love your style!

I'm sure your daughter will love this when she gets older :) And she'll eventually get to sing along with you :)
Thanks for sharing with us! :)

I'll be damn! A rap song where I could actually follow the lyrics, a rare thing for a non native :-) Sounds great to my ears even though I'm not very familiar with the genre and what is to be considered "good". Not that it matters, really enjoyed it. No constructive criticism from me I'm afraid, maybe the mix is lacking a little low end perhaps?

Here's the lyrics. Sorry for the late reply.

I hope you grow up and you're happy
And you're not depressed
I hope you grow up and you're healthy
and you show the rest
of the side that you decided
just to hide from the world
Dream big, but you'll always
be our little girl
Picture us making batter
give it a whirl
Pancakes in the kitchen
covered in syrup
Another Saturday morning
laughing and playing some tunes
then i got to go to work
and i'll be missing you soon
So let it ride for a little bit
moments that we're living in
Im not religious, but i swear
that you've been heaven sent
You got a smile that brightens up my life
the wrong paths that i took
i would do this twice
Cause it led me to your mother
which brought us to you
It's like i'm looking in a mirror
cause i see us in you
Now if i wake up
and it was a dream
There would always be a part of my heart
that's missing...

You can light it up (yeah)
You can light it up my love
Get the feeling like i just don't know
Where you been like most my life
Without you, without her
Right by my side (x2)

I would take a bullet for you
Light me up
I just adore you
I'm not in the dark anymore
My guiding light
Now show me how to make it home
Cause i can't do this on my own
Now I'm not in the dark anymore
My guiding light

I hope you grow up and you're humble
And you don't regret
I hope you know that you're loved
An you don't forget
I hope you get back up
When life knocks you down
Just know we're in your corner
Going round for round
Picture first day of school
An we walking you off
Tears falling from your eyes
And we're wiping them off
You we're just a little baby
Now you're growing so fast
Kiss you on your forehead
Now run off to class
Spread your wings let it take you far
You're perfect just the way you are
Just remember you are nothing
What they say you are
Don't need to lose weight
Just to know that you're winning
Cause when we die
No one's going to care
How skinny
No one's going to care how rich
Or how much money you made
They only care how they felt
And the way you behave
So lets dig into these times
Memories that we made
Cause in the end
Its the only thing
We'll take to the grave

Ahhhhhhh....,  a birthday celebration that took three weeks.
No really, I waited for the lyrics to be really sure I understood what was intended, and then forgot all about it.

Iíve had three chances to write a first birthday song and missed all three of them.
But I remember doing a Ďthe child comes when the child wants to comeí as our third was two weeks late. Apparently he was in no hurry. He still isnít, come to think of it.

I like the idea a lot, although it may result in an obligation to write one for the 70 birthdays to come.
A worthy source of inspiration. And if you choose or chose (I never know which one to use) to pick up that challenge, chances are that that oeuvre will be absolutely unique.

Many happy returns!
Kind regards, Gus
