In Another Life
on: September 26, 2013, 22:18:21
Hi all,

I've posted this on the guitar forum i use, prior to putting it in Tone's. The general feedback seems to be that the change from one part of the song to the other is too abrupt. Now, having listened to it so many times it sounds fine to me. So i was after some fresh ears. The idea behind the track is to set the scene in the first half, and express the anxiety and turmoil in the second half. Currently I'm thinking of adding a bridge between the two, and maybe a more "rock" orientated vocal over the outro. What do you guys think?

The original version had a flanging chorus effect on the acoustics to make them more dreamy, but Katja and Endureth weren't keen (what do they know?) :D
So i took it off.

Hello Digger
No idea off a bridge sorry but I would do it like this. But the version is fast made and very very rough.

It's starts off ace Digger - a little bit 'only you' by yazoo again  ;D

The opening chords are ace - a slide guitar would fit in perfect there

The change took me by surprise - it does work - but not conventionally

Personally I am hearing two different songs - I would love to hear the first part developed with a new mid 8 and the second worked into a new song

That's just my personal opinion - in fact I think the first part is quite poppy - quite commercial indeed  ;D

The first part is quite beautiful the second part is good but not quite as fetching to my ears. I do think the transition is too sudden. Perhaps a build using the outro type feel would allow listeners to ease into it easier.  You do need the second part, I see that. What you are trying to achieve with this is great but its crying out for a build into part two IMHO.

Good work though lovely acoustic gutar and fantastic vocals mate.

Both "halves" a great, but the bit I really like is the flanger on the fade guitar at the end that makes it reminiscent of something from Pink Floyd Animals and/or the Wurm section of Starship Trooper...I sort of wanted that to just go on and on.

As to the transition itself. To put it bluntly, there's a song playing it starts to finish and the stylus skips to the mid8 of an Oasis song...

...I think what is missing are cues/clues as to what might come later, just a hint to give us a reference to the jump. The jump can be harsh but a cue earlier on would make it stronger. In fact, as with various songs by Zeppelin, Rush and others where they shift from one style to something totally different mid-song perhaps an even more bombastic and abrupt transition would be even better!
