In Cold Blood - Cover Competition Entry

Very well then...!

This song is giving me such a hard time! Probably because I love the original by @Olbigead so much...
I had this idea to make it sound big and orchestral and electronic, but without losing the intimacy of Obbie's wonderful version.
I've spent hours and hours recording, arranging and mixing. I've produced so much material that my computer almost explodes. And my head, too. And I really fear this mess could have ruined the song, but I just cannot tell anymore... :-\

I'll declare this WIP for a start, and I'm extremely curious what you all will have to tell me. There are a few days left after all... ;)

Thanks for listening!

Cheers,
Mark

This is the incredible original by @Olbigead :

And this is my effort:

In Cold Blood

it's hard to understand
it's harder to believe
the blood is on their hands
it's in the air we breathe
among the bicycles
lying twisted there
the tangled bodies
left strewn across the square

running with the face of fear
in cold blood
our sons and our daughters
cut down and taken from us
in cold blood

can no one stop the slaughter?
for the love of god
they're killing them all
in cold blood

there was no warning
no mercy, no forgiveness
just grey of morning
and blood turned into mist
the rain will come again
and wash the stains away
it will not heal the pain
or wipe the memory

running with the face of fear
in cold blood
our sons and our daughters
cut down and taken from us
in cold blood

can no one stop the slaughter?
for the love of god
they're killing them all
in cold blood

in cold blood
in cold blood

Hi Mark,

sounds like you used the Damage library from NI (or something similar) quite heavily... I like the drums a lot and also the dynamics work very well to my ears. When you have the drums coming in big time, you could think about sining one octave higher such that your voice "is above" those heavy sounds. Or you do a bit of EQ high pitch.

Otherwise a very interesting arrangement.

Well @Mark Luto that is certainly a fresh stamp on the original. Very dramatic, yet gives off an almost sinister vibe that is cold, industrial and stark (in a good way!). Like a soundtrack for a chilling movie. It is technically accomplished, as ever for you, and a moving piece of mood music.

You have added another one and a half mins to the @Olbigead version and I can see why you have maybe done that in the quest for an almost epic soundtrack. But I felt that maybe by about four and a half mins I was searching for more surprises, maybe more lift to the chorus at that stage to add another layer or two onto this moody aural landscape.

I liked that the outro wound down rather than built up to climax, which again emphasised the chilling 'in cold blood' message.

Very strong contender, yet again, and a joy to listen to your most technical and measured interpretation.
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

An intelligently thought out interpretation of the original :)... I loved the detail and the amount of layers of sound which are so cleverly put together . You managed to create such a powerful, dramatic ambience and your music perfectly expresses the message of the lyrics in an abstract manner. It felt like this actually belongs to a scene from a film. Brilliant work! Well done! :) *applause*

Hey @Mark Luto , that was a verrry nice listen! I already had a sneak peak of course, and I loved hearing a newer version.
You managed to give a complete different sound to @Olbigead 's heartfelt song, and that's always a great thing to see when that happens.
Hahaha I can imagine the song gave you a very hard time (recently experienced that myself again after hours of recording, redoing, mixing, etc).
But my friend, your effort pays off! I think this is another very creative piece of work and I can hear your craftmenship. Fantastic mix/production!
The soundscape is brilliant and unique, I could easily imagine this as a soundtrack for a drama series about terror. Ah @Rachel_D and I were writing at the same time and I see I'm not the only one!
Earlier I mentioned the length might be an issue, but sitting down listening, relaxing and playing back this beauty, you kept drawing my attention.
Very precise, crafted work Mark, chapeau!!
Cheers my friend,

Wow @Mark Luto I am very impressed. You have totally transformed that great song and made it your own.

As @Mar T. and @Rachel_D comment - it has a cinematic feel to it and soundscape is a really good description. It conjures up a wet, dark streetscape where something bad has just happened or is about to happen!

There's so much atmosphere in this and I was hooked from the 20 second mark when that deep throb appears.

I love this Mark!

cheers

Thank you all so much! You're being way too kind, as usual. :)

Listening again after a couple of hours I think the instrumental is getting there, but I'm not too happy with my vocals. Seems like I was aiming a bit too high, doesn't it...? :-[

I know it's too long @Mar T. and @MichaelA , I thought about scratching the outro (which is whole minute), but somehow that part feels necessary to me.

I've also tried to add an electric guitar towards the end, that would probably have been the other layer that @MichaelA was missing, but I couldn't get it to sound right. Maybe I'll have another go... ;)

Yes @junemay , it is quite a lot of "Damage". Well spotted! An octave higher you say? You wouldn't want to hear me trying...! ;D

Thank you so much @Rachel_D and @Jurgen , for your accurate listening and for your lovely comments.

Now let's see if I can push this some more... ;)

Cheers,
Mark

that track and music sounds great @Mark Luto
the music has great atmosphere with a lot of tension building over long strechs of time

you use great sounds in the instrumental  ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb::
the beat in the second part gave me an Ultavox (Oh Vienna...) vibe

what i miss, well what think could be potential feedback / well, an idea  :P , is to really have a big contrast somewhere, a more extreme (and rather sudden) climax in sounds and volume, and perhaps even a full double time feel ritmwise, i mean a real eruption in the song, just for a few lines...make it huge instrumentwise?

i was thinking about this part:

"running with the face of fear
in cold blood
our sons and our daughters
cut down and taken from us
in cold blood"

never mind me   :P :P :P :P :-X :-X :-X

great @Mark Luto  ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb::

Epic music. Very inyteresting to listen to. Just a small technical comment. Somehow I am hearing some overcompression of saturation, or digital distortedness from 3.35. Probably the bass. May be it is my headphones...
Loving the Depeche Mode feel in the vocals and synths.
Strong work.

I love this piece. The slowly building and beautifully textured soundtrack is perfect. The vocals have the feeling of sacred music.....very captivating.

I also really like that irregular deep heartbeat that permeates the production.

Really excellent work.

@Mark Luto , I'm liking this completely different take on a fantastic song.

I like the pulse running through but I'm getting a bit too much energy coming through on my speakers at least.
I think it need a subtle tweak to stop it taking away from the lyrics. Maybe just take out some of the energy so it doesn't dominate the song.

Like @Leonard Scaper it feel it has a sacred feel and I'm getting ethereal choirs in my head.
Any chance of spinning them in perhaps just following the main melody toward the end of the song ?

@Mark Luto I missed this going up! Congratulations my friend. What a great job. It truly does have the feeling of a soundtrack, cinematic feel. Did you slow the pace a little? You mentioned this was a bit of a battle; to be honest I too always found this is a difficult song. The subject matter is one thing...several people find the lyrics too graphic...but your version I think does a better job than the original of capturing the torment and the anguish I was trying to convey. Amazing to hear what a talented musician can do with the raw material! PS. I love the breakdown at 5:04

Thank you so much for all your comments and the great input @Dutchbeat , @oorlab , @Leonard Scaper , @MrBouzouki, @Dara and of course @Olbigead !

Had to take a little break from that song, but there are still a couple of days left and now I'm going to try some more. Listening again, I'm still not happy with those vocals in (many) places. :-[

@Olbigead , I'm so glad you don't hate it! :D :-*
Yes, it certainly is a bit slower than your original, and also lower. And I've left more room between the parts, that's why it turned out so disgracefully long.
Thanks again for letting me do this to your song and for your encouraging words. I'm going to revise it now, and I hope I'll accomplish a version that I like a little better than the current one...

Cheers,
Mark
