"In The Blink of An Eye" a HAPPY song
« on: October 08, 2017, 17:26:19 »
Despite what you might think the title suggests, I had to go happy this weekend...the world is too depressing right now. This track marks the first time I've attempted a guitar solo with a flat pick!!! Yikes!!!

In the Blink of an Eye

Sitting alone on the hillside balancing clouds in the palm of her hand
The world lies waiting at her beck and call and will turn on her command
In the distance he sat watch cloaked in the cool September sky
Love doesn’t need to give a reason, it happens in the blink of an eye

Chorus

In the blink of an eye, life is rearranged, in the blink of an eye priorities are changed
You’re walking 10 feet off the ground and feel like you can fly,
Love doesn’t need to give a reason, it happens in the blink of an eye.

In the evening he would listen to her Spanish guitar play
Down below her window like some Romeo cliché
He tossed his heart up to her and was thrilled by her reply
Love doesn’t need to give a reason, it happens in the blink of an eye

Sharing cups of Jasmine tea and a magic trick on two
He could bend a fork using just his mind, in their silence they both knew
Cherish what’s been given, there’s no need to question why
Love doesn’t need to give a reason, it happens in the blink of an eye

A joyful song? My word!  Well done @Mr Sydney  sir!  :)

"Sharing cups of Jasmine tea and a magic trick on two
He could bend a fork using just his mind, in their silence they both knew"  ... this is cool. What does this mean? Actually don't answer that. Just leave it open for interpretation and it makes the listener think. That is what songs should do!  :)

Man, I wish I had a house with a porch, somewhere in an Indian Summer. I'd fly the complete kitchen in, get the cold beers out and sing this together. Thanks for making me dream.

This is great! Nothing announces a happy song like a banjo! Good flat pickin' there as well.

I hear some good harmonies there from your co-star. This is real down home music . What's that kick drum sound at the end?

I feel as though you and I balanced things out nicely here this weekend with songs at both ends of the emotional spectrum. I'll end my day today with this one in my head. Thanks for that.  :)

@Leonard Scaper    As I said, I thank you for "going there" with "Tired.." you struck multiple nerves with those lyrics. As for my offering, I know lots of people who wouldn't use the words "happy" and "banjo" in the same sentence:)    I guess my brain is always in many camps so far as what I write and how I present it...but it keeps sane.

@ajwvdberg  You're spot on with the porch idea..nothing I like more than just sitting around with friends picking and singing...some of them are wine drinkers though. Thanks for the kind words.

@Bill from November Sound   Thanks for the kind words Bill. I could tell you about the "fork" but that would be giving away magic secrets.

You must be thinking of that old joke about the guy who saw a bunch of guys beating up a banjo player. "Think I should help?"...he said to his friend. "Nope" said the friend. "I think they can handle it without you."   ;)

Seriously, though, I think that banjo is perfect in this song.

Hi @Mr Sydney ,

I really like it! I would increase the level of the bass in the mix, though. The background vocals are sometimes slightly out of tune.

Best,

Fabian

Well, since I have a song with exact same title, I simply had to check this one out to hear your take on that theme.  :)  Though I think my song is about hope, this one is a lot "happier" sounding than my song is, and I really like it.  Kudos on a fine song.

Mix-wise, there's something about the sound of the banjo - its reflections/reverberations - that has it sounding to me a bit too much like it was tacked on - like it's not part of the same mix.  But, my only real nit about how this sounds is that as the bass goes up, the bass notes get more and more conspicuously flat.  Granted, a fretless upright, bottle blow, etc. isn't going to be dead-on with pitch.  But, I think the deviation from pitch on the bass sound here as the notes go up in pitch is too conspicuously flat and quite significantly hurts the overall presentation of the song.  Personally, I would use at least some pitch correction on the bass track to fix that issue.

Good Stuff!

David

Nice song, catchy lyrics, great lead vocals, love the sing-along chorus and the strumming pattern. The wildly out-of-tune bass just adds to the rustic charm!

Pretty damn catchy and a song that could have come from any a year - yes definitely 'happy' for you!  ;)
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

Nice to hear a happy song and even nicer to hear a banjo - I always like a song with banjo!

I'm with @MichaelA - pretty damn catchy song!
