In the Morning
on: June 08, 2019, 00:26:35
Hello Kitchen!

been away for a while, but back now with a rework of an old demo about guilt, regret but mostly hope.

It's a whopping 4:55 minutes long so, if you're in a rush, or hate boring ballady bits, I suggest skipping to 3:25 and listening from there!

I'm not likely to have time to change much now (apart from the mix) but feedback always welcome....

Dan

VERSE 1
Goodnight sweet child,
I surrender to the yearning.
Iím leaving tonight,
And I wonít be returning.
I canít find the will,
To turn the ship around,
But if I could, you know,
Iíd sail these seas again.
Our lives are changing,
In so many ways,
But some things stay the same.

CHORUS
We will define our ever after.
Turn our sadness into laughter.
Iíll come running when youíre calling.
Iíll will catch you if youíre falling.
And Iíll still love you in the morning.
Iíll still love you in the morning.

VERSE 2
Goodnight sweet child,
Iíve got many things to tell you.
But itís hard to explain,
The emotions I am going through.
I never wanted it to end this way,
But all I said and did,
Could never be undone.
Our lives are changing,
In so many ways,
But some things carry on.

CHORUS
We will define our ever after.
Turn our sadness into laughter.
Iíll come running when youíre calling.
I will catch you if youíre falling.
And Iíll still love you in the morning.
Iíll still love you in the morning.

Really reminds me of Queen, especially that lead guitar tone  (a good thing).
A really professional recording, nice one.

Something about this really reminds me of Oasis @DanJames.

Not the singing but the song itself, it has the Noel Gallagher type melody. It's very catchy and although it is a bit long, it doesn't drag. In saying that, it could fade out a little around 4 mins and still be a great song.

The drums sound a little harsh and loud on my mac speaker but much better with headphones (sennheiser HD202) - but I think your vocals need to be a little louder.

Minor points and I'm certainly no producer so feel free to ignore my mixing feedback!  :)

cheers

An ambitious production @DanJames - there are enough changes that it doesn`t feel too long to me and the melody is good ( your embellishment on the chorus even better!).
Love that guitar tone and the background aaahs, though they do seem a bit loud in relation to your lead vocal.
Excellent work!

Robert

Thanks @Marcus Nalgaber , @realkevm , @robertkc and @Jurgen for your comments,. I have made a few tweaks to the mix based on your feedback- lead vocals should now be louder, 'ahhhs' a bit quieter and drums less intrusive.

This is a great ballad with a classic feel.

As @robertkc mentioned, you change things up nicely throughout so the length is not a problem for me.

@DanJames - super ballad! Very good mix, balance etc. You might want to change a wee bit the effect on the vocals - they could be a bit sharper or spikey....but it is in the same style as your disco song Seize the Day, so that can serve as a reference point.

Hi @DanJames ,
I've posted a bit on SoundCloud but I' will post here too of course.

The strength of this track is the acoustic playing, those little fills and the general rolling feel of the acoustic guitar, coupled with the electric work,  keeps it driving forward and stops it becoming a plodder.

There is lots to like about this track to be honest, it seem well constructed, everything seems where it needs to be.

This track has your signature sound too ... you could tell it's one of yours.

On the mixing front, I was going to comment on it sounding a bit hollow in the centre on the loud bits (panning) , but I was listening on headphones. On my monitors everything sounds balanced. Maybe you could try nudging the bass on the loud bits and see if it adds a bit more weight / punch as a contrast to the quieter verses.

Maybe the snare is just a tad too loud on the quiet bits so it pulls the attention of the listener. Again only a subtle tweak might be required.
Much will depend upon listening systems I guess. It's a shame you couldn't have tried brushes as opposed to sticks on the first verse. I used to work with a drummer, jazz trained, who used to regularly change from brushes to sticks on songs like this.

Just my random musings so don't agonise at all on these mix comments.  ;D ;D ;D

Good Job

Bloody fantastic! Great dynamics & ebb and flow, acoustics are yummy! . There are a few places where I find the levels just a little bit off , a vox phrase a tad too up front, a guitar coming in a little too 'brutal' etc but these are really minor things,.
My only major 'complaint' would be the cymbal crashes during the verses, they really stick out in a bad way. I'd drop them completely or at least try to tame them a bit.

But overall a great piece, bravo!
