Is my song Beside Me worth trying to promote?
on: January 24, 2019, 21:43:57

I am new to here and new to Sound Cloud too. Really excited by this forum and the opportunities. I've been writing songs for a while and worked a few up into demos including one called Beside Me which people (friends and family, so not necessarily the most reliable witnesses!) have said sounds a bit like The Shires. I'm too close to it now to hear objectively and value any feedback from this group: https://soundcloud.com/joehind_songwriter/beside-me.

Thank you.

Hey Joe....welcome to The Kitchen! This is a nice song. I enjoyed listening to it here in my office and I'll give it a more critical listen when I get back to the studio. You have a great voice that really works well for this kind of ballady kind of stuff.

As far as promoting it goes....I guess that depends on what you want to achieve. These days promoting our music has come to mean taking it to the street and trying to build a following. It's very hard to separate yourself from the huge pack of singer/songwriters through Soundcloud and Youtube releases, even with stellar professionally produced material.

This forum is a great place to hone your craft in the company of like minded souls, all of whom have a song to sing and/or play for one reason or another. Take a look around and see what others are doing...see what resonates with you. Let folks know you gave their song a listen and they will return the favor.

We like listening to each other's work but we also all like to hear honest critiques so we can grow.

Hi! I listened to your song, you really have a great voice! As for the song, I have to say that I liked it but I think it needs more dynamic.
Maybe it's just me, but after the first two minutes I began to lose attenction because the dynamic of the instruments is almost the same for all the track.
I'm talking only as a listener and as a singer because I'm not a strumentist,  but this is my impression  :) It's also true that you said that it's a demo, so maybe you've already noticed that and I'm talking for nothing
Anyway, I really think that the song is worth promoting, so keep up with your work  ;)

Thanks for the feedback and particularly the point about making it more dynamic. I agree!  I should point out it's not me singing. I work with musicians and singers on the songs I write so my role is lyrics, melody and structure. They work as musicians for hire so the songs remain mine. It costs more to get things recorded this way but I think the quality is better, but it does mean I need to get better at nailing it first time!

Thanks again,

It's great to have you here Joe @joehind_songwriter, we have a few lyricists and members who get their material recorded by others in addition to members who do the whole thing themselves. The kitchen is quite a 'broad church' musically too with all types of music available.

One of the key things about the Kitchen is the idea of helping others to move forward in their own efforts to create. We do have a lyrics section where people put up unfinished lyrics for critique and help so it would be great to get you contributing if you can. Since we have quite a few members who don't have English as their first language, posting your lyrics along with a link would make it easier for them to contribute to any replies to your song posts.

I've had a listen to some of your songs. You have some nice material.

I'm intrigued if you develop melodies to your lyrics how do you get your intention across to the musicians. Do you do a basic draft recording that is used as a guide track ?

Just like on the forum I think posting up your lyrics and a bit more of a background about the song and how it came about is interesting to some and might get you a bit more traction.

Happy to share lyrics and chords etc.

Beside Me

Intro (two bars)
G   C   G   C  (finger picked with hammer ons)

Verse 1
G            C
I wonít say itís been easy
G         C
I canít say itís been hard
G      D
Sometimes we get weary
Sometimes it gets dark
You know there are moments
In everyoneís life
When things get too close to
The sharp edge of a knife

G            C
But through all my troubles
Thereís one thing I can say
You have been beside me
Every step of the way

Verse 2
G            C
When Iím lost in the forest
G         C
And crashing through the trees
G         D
When Iím at my weakest
Itís you who comes to me

With you I find it easy
I can be myself
And when you are with me
I donít need no one else

G            C
Oh through all my troubles
Thereís one thing I can say
You have been beside me
Every step of the way

Repeat Verse 1 and Chorus x 2 (only last two lines on 2nd repeat)

Thanks again and happy to contribute however I can to this forum. It is valuable.

Best wishes,

Everything depends on what you want to achieve and the time you want to dedicate. I honestly believe that your style, at least in this song, is very nice, you have a very good voice that conveys the softness of this ballad. Good sound too.

Very nice recording. Not sure what your intentions are commercially. I'm guessing that since you  had this recorded you might intend to market it as a single to someone. The first thing I would recommend is you  use  a more restrictive way to post the music, maybe add a watermark to the track or it could be lifted and sold by someone else. I don't have mixes that I consider to be stellar on SC.  I would disable downloads on SC. There are other options out there. I'm looking into this-

The track makes a nice demo. Sadly, there are so  many other similar kinds of tunes out there that  you need to get lucky to get this heard by the right people. If you use something like CD Baby you can get better online exposure.I think this is a marketable track.

Big difference in making music for fun and deciding to market it.  If it's a dream though, go for it and don't let me or anyone else stop you. ;)

Hi @joehind_songwriter   Ö.. Again, welcome to the kitchen. This is a great place for you to get some second or third opinion on your creations.
You are writing some nice music. The lyrics are very good, positive, inspirational and commercially viable. So Ö way to go! :)

I'm, admittedly, not the best of reviewers ( @Zedd says I'm not supposed to put this disclaimer in my posts anymore.... oh well) but I've been coming in contact with modern/pop country more often today due to our cover gigs. So I can offer this: it needs a little more melodic contour and especially some ridiculously memorable, annoyingly repeatable hook.  ;) Also, as @Clanik92 says that dynamic motion - drop it down real minimal at some parts.

Honestly, your song that starts playing on SoundCloud after this one is in stuck in my head more " I just need someone to hold on in the dark. I just need someone to hold on in the dark...Ö" over and over. And to be pop country it probably could use more of that earlier. :)

To be fair I'm not a fan of this kind of music. Melissa and I find ourselves doing gigs sometimes for the clientele that wants to hear - "stuck like glue, stuck like glue, you and me baby we're stuck like glue" repeated over and over and over and over Ö hey that's what people like. ;)

Thanks again for the feedback.

It's valuable and I agree with it all. This song does need more of a hook, more dynamism and probably an effective bridge as well.

It's a useful process and I will re-work the song, as well as others in my SoundCloud playlists. For  example, I am working on a shorter version of Gold Dust (https://soundcloud.com/joehind_songwriter/gold-dust) at the moment.

Without sounding overly cheesy, I do feel like I learn every day. What surprises me is how much you think you know about songs from listening to them every day but how much you don't pick up on until you really start to dissect the songs into their various elements.

Hoping to contribute more to this forum too! Juggling a full time job, family, allotment and the songs...

Best wishes,

Hey @joehind_songwriter , Welcome to the kitchen! :)

So I read your post, and then started reading through the remaining posts while I listened to your song. I agree with what the others are saying -that the song would feel even better if the instrumental was less repetitive in rhythm as it does get a bit too much if you unknowingly start focussing on it while listening. And it doesn't really have a climax which makes it feel a bit dragging/long and makes it less likely to stand out (in the commercial world), as others pointed out. But, having said that, I still enjoyed listening to your song and your vocal....

...and then I arrived at your next comment where you mentioned 'gold dust' and I went to have a listen - I got hooked as soon as the vocal started ... and once I reached 00.50 - 1.19 - wow that vocal is incredible - is that you singing? I love this! (a lot!) melody wise/ music wise and voice-wise ...from what I hear on the radio, I guess this one would be more viable... it brings to mind songs by Geroge Ezra .....but having said that - of course, it depends on what image you want to share with your audience. If you want to refine it even more - I'd suggest making some changes to the musical intro - to hook the listener even more from the start... and melody-wise there's "in this space in this time I am yours you are mine" - for some reason it is reminding me a lot of 00:36 > https://youtu.be/oTeUdJky9rY?t=36 and that distracts me a bit from the song, as I play the other one in my mind.... BUT it might just be me ... and if I am the only one hearing this just ignore my comment.

btw: it's cool that you changed the font of the song title on soundcloud - how do you do it?
btw 2: most of us over here have crazy 'real life' scenarios too, packed with all sort of things, so we understand that too :)

Thanks for sharing!
and keep on creating! :)

Hi Rachel,

Thanks for feedback and particularly your kind comments about Gold Dust. That song is actually now on Spotify:  https://open.spotify.com/album/62bfmvW0BURfQeVrvShCb0

I'm also having it remade as a sub-3 minute song with less cello, some of the repeat verse cut and a different singer plus backing vocalist. Some earlier feedback suggested it was a bit long and, similar to Beside Me, not expansive enough so there will be a higher octave section towards the end.

It's not me singing (none of my songs are) as I "just" write the lyric and melody and direct production. At the moment that is with a US company I work with called Tunedly who offer a decent value way of getting demos and songs made. You pay about £70 a month for membership which allows unlimited vocal+guitar/piano demos and then about £200 per full song on top. You can't choose your demo artists other than choosing male or female but you can choose the artists for the full songs. You retain all rights as the artists work as "for hire".

The soundcloud fonts are simple to change. Just head here: https://lingojam.com/FancyTextGenerator and copy and paste your preferred font from the right hand side into the soundcloud box. It seems to work on twitter too.

All the best,

Thought I would update that I have stopped using SoundCloud and moved onto Deezer so old links referenced in this discussion will no longer work.

Thanks for your contributions and input to date.

I didn't want to delete the whole conversation because it has been valuable.
