Just Words - Cover Comp Entry
on: July 07, 2016, 16:50:41
Hi all,

Here's my entry for the cover competition.

https://soundcloud.com/markluto/just-words

It was harder than I thought. I really struggled finding the right way to sing it. Finally I ended up with very gentle and quiet vocals. I think that works best. It probably isn't the final version (we've lots of time left after all), but I wanted to share it and see if there's some helpful feedback. Especially would like to know if you think the mix / EQing works that way...

Thank you very much @jurgen for allowing me to make my very own version of your beatiful song.
The original sounds like that: https://soundcloud.com/jurgen-joarder/just-words-1

Cheers,
Mark

Just Words

I hear them before I see them
and I lower my head
I know what's coming
before it's been said
the same old lines
still they fill me with dread

just words
just words

spat with venom
or so called jest
smile and sigh
you know it is for the best
you long to scream
please just give it a rest

just words
the spark to light your fears
just words
the start of inner fears

just words
just words

they're not sticks or stones
but still they bruise deep
barbs that hurt
they get beneath
your outward smiles
while inside you weep

just words
just words
just words
just words

Quiet sweet. I especially like your vocals, very good. I get a kind of "church mood ", sweet but really dark atmosphere.

Very beautiful treatment of the original @Mark Luto  ::smiley:: ::thumb::

Think the soft and gentle vocal delivery style works very well and I'm no expert but the EQing seems to work in my ears nicely.  ;D Just a couple of very minor niggles and when I have a bit of time (just about to leave work) I'll listen again and pinpoint the timings.  ;)

I'm looking forward to listening to these covers as they come out.  :D

P.S. BTW is that a bass clarinet?

I love your version @Mark Luto. It gave me goosebumps and made me listen to and think about the words much more than in my version.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to do your version. I can sense a real understanding and feeling for the words as well.

Cheers

Jurgen

@jurgen
Thank you very much, that means a lot. It really helped when you told me about your inspiration for writing the song. So glad you like it! :)

@it must be me, Dutchbeat?
Thanks DB! After making the whole production mostly using headphones I listened on three different speaker systems just before I was going to bounce it to soundcloud. These final listens made me reduce the volume of the (main) vocals a little, as they sounded too loud to me. Now I think the harmonies are still a bit too prominent. Any other opinions on the level of the vocals?

@jim
Yes, it is a bass clarinet. ;) I'm very curious about your "niggles". Your feedback is always extremely helpful and very much appreciated! Thank you my friend! :-*
I've tried to EQ all the instruments a little to the "dark" side and I wonder if it's too much since they all are bassy instruments anyway... ???

@lubeck
Thanks man. Church mood? Really? I'm afraid I'm a heathen... ;D

Woot!  My instrument ID powers are still strong!  ;D :D ;D  Tricky one that too as bass clarinets can play quite high...(stop patting yourself on the back Jim... :-[)

Nearly the weekend, then I'll give you the feedback, they really were the tiniest little observations, it'll probably be an anticlimax when you hear them.

I didn't hear it being too muddy, but I only listened on ear buds so I [probably] wouldn't...I will check that as well tomorrow.  I've been finding the spectral analyser is quite useful in that respect...if your DAW has that plugin.   :)

I think the vocal levels sound about right...everything is audible and they are in the front, but not too much.  :D

@jim, yes thank go it's Friday night again, that time of the week that hobby songwriters come alive..... ;D ;D ;D

and @Mark Luto, I also listened on headphones only, and I thought the vocal(s) should be up in volume..... :P :P :P :P

but, I will listen again, I had troubles with my ears lately, the doctor did a good job at fixing that this morning....
(serious)

but as far as the low and dark end in the music, it sounded great to me, but let's see what the mixing and mastering experts of this kitchen say about that

lovely version this of a great song of @jurgen
it is a song form Jurgen, right???  ??? ??? ???

Ooooh @Mark Luto what a beautiful cover!! So tastefully how you approached this one.. It still has the layed back feel. I loooved the vocals, although I agree with @it must be me, Dutchbeat? I'd prefer them a bit louder in the mix (but listening on my headphones as well). I was not able to hear every word clearly. I will monitor on a hi-fi set later. Great instrumentation, I really love the dynamics... Man this can air on the radio almost like it is.
I'm thrilled to hear with this beautiful song of @jurgen . I really, really enjoyed listening. Wow..

Hi,

I didn't know the original of the song (just listening to both of them). Both songs are great. And I love covers that give a song their own handwriting...

Best,

Fabian

WOW! :O :) I really like the way you treated this cover Mark!! You nailed it! The song is sounding brilliant. I love the piano –it really brings out the emotion (especially with the touch of higher pitched notes) and the message of the song perfectly. And I especially like the way you treated the chorus with the harmonies. Your vocal sounds really great and the harmonies are brilliant – they fit in so perfectly with the song and are really emotive and delve into the reality of the lyrics. I didn’t mind the sound level of the vocal, I like the way it blends with the music at times and how it becomes more prominent at the chorus sections. The clarinet section was a good introduction too and works well  :) This is truly amazing! :) A really special and touching piece and a pleasure to listen to! :)

Karma for you! :)

@Mark Luto you probably have seen these "Talent shows" where the jury is saying: Oh my god - I got goosebumps.

Well - for me this is true. Your voice is so wonderful. the piano, the strings, the second voice and all the harmonies.
This is really upper class.

enough said....click on replay...:D

@Mark Luto, please accept my apologies...been working on the D minor (as opposed to A minor, gives you a high E, but guitar work for me  :-\) version of Footprints and only listened to this beautiful piece again earlier but then had to go out and only have had the time to write this now.  I'm not entirely sure what the two things I heard were, the only slight discrepancy I heard today is the places where you break slightly out of your soft voice in the lead vocal (such as where you sing "they're not"), but now I don't think that's a problem either...it adds a nice variety to the performance now I listen again.  :)
