I am OVER THE MOON with gratitude to Bill Rood Jr from November Sound @november-love-680008043 for offering to lay down some "real" tenor sax, unlike the midi tenor I first used. Does "night and day" sum it up? Thank you Bill for making this song even more meaningful!

Less Road Ahead (copyright 2018 Three String Music BMI)

I was nursing a beer In an airport bar my flight was late, not much else to do but sit and wait
He hung his cane on the chair, sat himself down with a mighty groan
Said thereís sure been a lot of hard, hard miles put on these bones

With his Rum & Coke got to shootiní the breeze, life in review
Stories of road and what heíd been through, He played tenor sax since he was just a skinny teen
Lookiní back on all heís done and all heís seen

Iíve let go of lifeís sour notes and hold sweeter ones instead
Thereís a lot of road behind me, but less of it, less of it ahead

As he spoke, I was noticing the slightest frown, said a black manís life wasnít easy in a Southern town
I packed my bags said farewell, Chicago bound, there his music fell upon more fertile ground

In a four piece band, an endless stream of jazz filled nights
Playing through the blue smoke and barroom fights
Tried marriage once, sad to say it ended quick, you gotta be around son to make it stick

When the music called, Iíd always be the first to go, motel rooms were the only home Iíd ever know
All in all thereís no regrets, far as Iím concerned, every wrinkle showing is a lesson learned

They called his flight, he stood to leave and shook my hand
Said Iím off to bury the last member of my band
Yeah, itís been some ride, he grabbed his cane and gave a smile
Looks like thereís time for putting on a few more miles

@Mr Sydney

I like this song and the folk/guitar sound that you have. You've got a bit of grit in your voice which suits the song and style perfectly. Would you be interested in adding some violin to the background? I'm thinking more of a fiddle sound with a little depth to it that could mix with your voice, and the guitar and Bill's sax. I have a specific sound in mind, but it's hard for me to explain it without an actual demo and I cannot play violin :(. Something that would sort of sweep up and down with your vocals, as they sort of rise and fall through the song - it could add a little poignancy to it at various parts.

and what a great collab with @Bill from November Sound , lovely saxophone!

awesome

i have no comments, it is all great in my opinion...but....what about a space with saxophone only, a solo reflecting the road behind and the less miles ahead?

This is a great song .... story .... made into a song.  :) I loved it the second I heard it. Kudos to @Mr Sydney !

I tried to play basically what @Mr Sydney had originally played but I did it a little more the way a saxophonist would. I also added a little bit of jazz to react to the lyrics regarding the jazz clubs, etc.

The story is about a tenor saxophone player and it needed a saxophone in it! I'm glad I could help out a little.  ::Note::

Fantastic song! very nice pure folk. I really like it!
@EdZ314 , you've had a great idea with adding a violin.
I think I have in mind the perfect example with similar ingredients and style, Townes Van Zandt

Great job guys!

Iím a sucker for a good story song and this is a goodie fo sho!!  ;D lovely playing, especially the sax, nice singing. ;D ::thumb::

The only thing that I noticed & it might just be my ears, but the very last word ďaheadĒ seemed to be a little off and clashed a little with the sax....again, forgive me if Iím wrong, but at least if Iím right, itís only one word and is an easy fix.

I enjoyed my listens! Cheers fellas.  ;D

Hey @LostBoy if there's any clash it's likely the sax player's fault  :D

From a music theory stand point the notes don't clash because James is singing an A while I'm playing up to an F# ( my G#). While I'm doing that, however, I'm bending it up and giving it a growl ala Kirk Whalum (.... think sax solo in Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You"....) so that gives it some "pain"...ha,ha ;) Never try to tune to a saxophone that's for sure. Bad things can happen.

I gave @Mr Sydney three tracks so he could choose his own ending. There was: Ending 1, Ending 2 and Wildman Ending.  Now, which one do you think he picked?  :) If you pick Wildman Ending then all bets are off .... that's what I say.  :D  :D

I've just listened to this and like the original but this new version with 'organic sax' playing adds another element to what is already a fine song.
Great bit of work @Mr Sydney and @Bill from November Sound

This is a great story song and the addition of the sax really takes it to another level.

I could almost feel that was a live performance @Mr Sydney where I was in an audience, all captivated by your compelling narrative music. @Bill from November Sound has done you proud there with that restrained but soulful sax accompaniment and all in all it's just a real engaging slice of Kitchen delicious pie!  ::thumb::
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

Just wanted to say a quick "thank you" to everyone for taking time give "Less Road Ahead" a listen. I can't thank Bill enough for that wonderful tenor sax work. I am so very grateful. Sorry I haven't spent much time in the kitchen...life...you know...that thing that gets in your way.
