Like in a Bad SF Tale
on: December 13, 2019, 21:45:23
Yes, That is the title of the track. In fact, it was a track that I'd forgotten all about. I recorded it about 3 years ago, but when found it again, I thought heck, let's just finish it. It would be a waste to let it die into forgetfulness like Space Invaders.

Like in a Bad SF Tale

I heard a gentle hum
From a drunken azure sky
And wondering what it was
I looked up to find out why
But all that I could see
Was that ocean mirror space
And nothing seemed amiss
In that giant empty place

So I reckoned it was safe
To pursue my daily ramble
The sound might just dissolve
In the later morning rubble
The city looked asleep
When I crossed the thoroughfare
There were only Autumn leaves
Gently dancing everywhere

I guess thatís when they came

The girl just looked at me
With her eyes riddled with fear
She said ĎPlease sir, please begoneí
Those things are very near!
When I asked her what she meant
She just pointed at the gate
Of a giant warehouse store
And then fidgeted some more

The lass was quite assured
It was that which caused the din
So compelling was her tone
That my doubt was overthrown.
So I took her by the hand
And I asked her to submit
So we might find a hideaway
And see the end of it

And the girl here in my arms
And the raindrops on her brow
Is as sweet as she might be
But what if she doesnít like me?

@Pleudoniem - fun sounding song.  Sci-fi remains an unlimited source of fantasy.
The instrumental was recorded three years ago, and the vocals this week? Very coherent.
Only tip I'd offer is to lower the reverb on the vocals  somewhat.

@oorlab Ok. Just lowered the reverb a bit. The vocals could be a slight bit softer as well, as well as the brass. On SoundCloud it always slounds slightly different from what I get out of Reaper.

Some of the VSTs I had to use new gear for, as the software had been updated. So the composition is 3 years old, but the instruments may be newer.

@Pleudoniem - vocals much better on https://soundcloud.com/pleudoniem/like-in-a-bad-sf-tale

Now the lyrics sound less muffled, while the reverb on the flanged guitar gives it an impression of depth.

But... - now some brass / strings sound really sticks out at 1.35 and onwards - that I didn't notice in your first mix.

@oorlab Yes, I hear it as well, and I am not quite satisfied yet. It appears to be doing quite annoying things. When I lower one sound, another takes over the dominance. I've already been tweaking the volumes up and down for some time now, hoping to find a good balance. I think I've remedied it now, though.

@oorlab I think the balance is ok now. It took me a bit of time to make all the instruments find a good equilibrium.

I was actually hoping that @Jurgen might comment as well. He is usually quite critical, and in this particular song, with the balancing problem, who knows what he might still hear that could be useful.

Donít know if I am allowed to enter into a polite conversation between two distinguished gentle persons.?
An opinion:
Iíve been listening and reading and trying to follow the very very small changes from one version to the next. And I think itís a typical @Pleudoniem song with some details fight for attention in the backing.

And so what? I like the chaos, the energy, and the creative drive that radiates from the lyrics!
I say: leave the song alone and delve into the vaults. Who knows what gems are lying there waiting for a 2019/2020 treatment.

SF gone wild? Why didnít I think of that. Bloody geniality these lyrics.
Of course itís just an opinion, butitís my opinion!
Kind regards, Gus

I really like your creativity @Pleudoniem

It has a great start and you develope a good flow. The lyrics are well thought and performed with great passion. ::thumb:: Its good how you play around with the vocals too.

I know I don't comment your songs very often.... it's not because I don't like them its more....  I need to get me a  right approach to your style.  Often I'm just so distracted after hear your songs  as I'm rather more a purist and the single items of it just overtax me.
This one  sounds more homogenous to me and i feel a direction ... yeah, I'm glad about!  ;D
I like how you brought the  real instruments in interaction with the sound patches here especially the guitar! Nice!!

@LePlongeur I wasn't planning on changing it any more now. As you say, maybe I should leave it for a while, or another 3 years :) Possibly it's why I left it alone 3 years ago, to begin with. If you read carefully, you'll notice that the person telling the story isn't exactly in his right mind. So yes, chaos befits it.
@Mo Actually, the guitar is a stick, a tap guitar. That is a 12-string guitar-like instrument that you cannot really strum, but you need to tap your fingers on it like they often do in metal. But true, it is a real instrument.

@Mo I do, in Reaper, but the tracks are accompanying, not self-standing. So, to give you an idea of what such a thing can do, I think I'd better show you an icon in the field, Trey Gunn. He used to play with King Crimson for some time, but now has his own band. See how you like this:

@Mo It does, but it is a bit tricky to play, unfortunately. The notes are organised in a different way than on a guitar. There are quints, but no quarters. The left half has a different setting than the right half (i.e. left or right from the thick string in the middle). I like the instrument very much though.

I knew there had to be some King Crimson appreciation in the musical mosaic of @Pleudoniem  :pompom:
Thanks for the explanation of that guitar sound- I think it works really well here, and the bass is also a pulsating standout.
The lyrics are fun ; perhaps the tale is SF leading to a romantic encounter- the outcome yet to be determined.
The chorus passages are  a nice mix of complex  musical layers with that chant in the background.
Very good!

Robert
