Hi Guys....

It's been a while since I've posted anything and even longer since I've tried a mix other than a 1+1 ...maybe something to do with my evel of patience and the level of effort and skill required to mix..  ;D ;D

But nevertheless here I am with a WIP mix... I've gotten to the point where I'm pushing levels up and down and not hearing the difference so I think it's time for some objective advice - bear in mind my skills here so basic steers would be welcome..

I had intended to re-record the vox and I may still do as well as some of the parts but I guess I know myself well enough to say that I may actually not do that at this point ...  All and any comments welcome:

Latest mix:
https://soundcloud.com/monnodb/listen

Verse 1:
Isolation is my protection from the world pushing through
Shutting down seems like the easier thing to do
I close my eyes and cover my ears to lock the past away
You keep telling me that's a battle I'll lose every day

Chorus:
Why should I listen to you
Listen to you
Why should I listen to you
Listen to you
Listen to you

Verse 2
So many years getting away from the life I knew before
So many faces lost to me now, I don't want to see them any more
You say that I should throw wide open the windows to the past
But you had dreams and I had nightmares and a fear built to last

Chorus:
Why should I listen to you
Listen to you
Why should I listen to you
Listen to you
Listen to you

M8:
The world is full of bleeding hears needing salvation
But not me
Shut down time is my safety line,
My sanctuary
Go spend your time on some other poor soul
Don't borrow my trouble to make you feel whole
Make you feel whole, make you feel whole, make you feel

Chorus:
Why should I listen to you
Listen to you
Why should I listen to you
Listen to you
Listen to you

Hey @Zedd ....Great to hear new material from you. This is a good one too. The subject matter is very direct and your vocals deliver it with just the right tenor. Since you did ask about the mix, here are a few things that caught me up during two full listens:

I wanted the guitars to have more presence in general especially right from the start. The beginning of the song felt like it needed to have more presence in general.......if you are going to keep the vocals you might want to bring them up a bit at the start to establish them. Listening again and it's really just that first line and particularly the word "protection"

When the drums come in at the choruses that snare feels too strong. You also may want to fade them sooner at the end.

I love how you change it up at around 2:20 but your vocals sound different from the rest of the song. You could fix that with some EQ automation....or just re-sing. Piano sounds good there.

That chorus is really good....very strong. I took a break from writing this to make some tea and that chorus kept rolling in my mind.
"The main thing is to have a gutsy approach....but use your head." Julia Child

I love this track @Zedd , but then there aren't any of your songs that I don't love  ::heart:: Such a catchy chorus and I love the far off harmonies  ::thumb::
I think you did an excellent job of the mix, although I think @Leonard Scaper had some good points, but I like the different sound of your voice at 2:20  ::Note::
I really like the drum beat and how it softens during the verses ::Dutch:: Sweet guitar intro and throughout, great bass line, piano and of course beautiful vocals  ::dj::
Really like the concept and lyrics...where do you get your inspiration? Did you play all the instruments yourself? ::e-guitar3::
So nice to hear something new from you Zedd...it's been too long ::Rachel:: This is one I'll listen to over and over again. ::Suzy::

You already know how I feel about this one, and I remain steadfast, love it Karen. Thank you for putting it out there for real this time. The hook is stuck in my head...which is wonderful!

Ha yes @Mr Sydney I wasn’t too proficient with my privacy settings in this one - ‘treated inflicted on you and @Olbigead early mixes on this by accident! Still not done but getting somewhere  ;D   Thank you for your lovely comments!

Thanks @Leonard Scaper for the pointers and comments - noted for the next mix. Hmmm the snare - I agree it’s too loud in the chorus - I’ve managed through the kind and patient assistance of JB to split out the separate drums but not managed to automate them individually (I’m applying ‘global’ changes to each drum part at the moment - some YT research required). I agree that the vocal is gentler in the M8 but not sure I dislike it. I did actually re-record the whole tops but only took the first line (as I changed part of the lyric). I’ll listen to the redone /at re-record after all.

Thanks @CrystalSuzy!! Yes all me apart from bass and the drums are EZDrummer. Load lots of parts in to disguise the lack of skill (particularly on the guitar). Lots of Wilbury action😁!! This one came out of that first line I read somewhere and noted down but it was ‘Isolation is not protection’ and morphed and meandered from there :-).

::heart:: ::heart:: ::heart:: @Goatie Thank you!!

Thanks all for listening and Commenting!

A nice song @Zedd  and I'd like to suggest you try one simple thing. As @Leonard Scaper said the snare is very intrusive.
That dynamic hit against the rest of the song will take some taming to make it feel right.

I'd like to suggest you re-do the drum part by replacing all the snare hits with the rim-shot used earlier in the song to 'keep the lid on it' so to speak
and repost it up so we could have another listen to the song without that strong snare hit. I even wonder if you could do a dropped section at 2:20
when the drums disappear all together and it's just Vox and piano before kicking in again at around 2:38.

I think if you get the drum bit right everything else will fall into place and we will be able to hear your lovely voice to the full. :-)

Excellent work Karen...consistent with the quality of the rest of your songs, which we have heard in SC. I see that you have been given here interesting suggestions for new mixes and I do not have much more to add. Congrats.

Thanks @BLACK MIRROR and for the SC likes and comment!

@MrBouzouki - hmmm you might be right about the snare cos I did play around with it a fair but and it didn’t make a huge diff - I’ll see if I can try that.

Will try to take all Suggs into next mix.

I’ll be back! Thanks all!

WOW, this is soooooo Nice  ::headphone:: ::headphone:: ::headphone:: ::headphone::

my only tip would be, to put compression on that first, the low vocal track

make, and bring, that vocal out strong, all the way, at every point

but just...wow

Thanks @Dutchbeat - you are, as always, too kind!! But I am always chuffed :) !

I've remixed.. I'll walk away from it now for a few days at least...or maybe longer :) - latest mix is here if anyone is interested :

https://soundcloud.com/monnodb/listen

@MrBouzouki - I did try a drop where you suggested but I think I'd have to some more re-arranging to make it work.. I may actually come back to that (I bounced a mix if you're interested in hearing it but it doesn't sound great).. and I opted for trying to tame the snare because I wanted to bring in more oomph in the chorus..

Thank you ALL for your listening, time and great feedback...

Excellent mix! You brought you vocals in beautifully and tamed the snare nicely. Everything sounds perfectly in place. These computer speakers do not do this song justice.......I'll be listening again tonight in the studio just to enjoy the song.

Hi @Zedd

There's been lots of good feedback already so I just want to say the new version is a big improvement mix-wise.

The song has come alive more - I'm certainly no expert but I'm guessing because the vocals are forward more and stand out compared to the original version. The vocals sound much clearer and brighter.

The drums also sound much better.

btw - I love that tremolo guitar at the end - I'm a big fan of tremelo  ;D

Great song!

cheers
