Hi Kitcheners!

This is my entry for the "Magic Words" Challenge. I've really put my back into it.

https://soundcloud.com/user-2898025/lullabies-for-my-nemesis

(Just in case anybody wonders about the verses: The tempo is a steady 135 bpm but the time signature is 7/8 - 4/4 - 7/8 - 4/4 and then it goes over into 4/4 for the rest of the song...)

Fun fact: The intro is in part borrowed from the old Russian lullaby "Bayu Bayushki Bayu"...  and that's a scary one ... ;D )

Hope you like it.

Lullabies For My Nemesis
-------------------------------------
Verse1:
My life in solitude was gone
Just like a ripple trough the soul
I spent it mostly on the run
Yet somehow never in control

Pre-Chorus 1:
For heís my nemesis
Furtive antagonist
Itís not so clear
But can you hear
My inner voice, itís started singing

Chorus: Am, F, Dm, A#, Am, F, Dm, A# / E7
Lullabies for my nemesis
Rectified by my promises
Lullabies for my nemesis
Donít wanna wake him from his sleep

Am, C, D, A#, Am, F, D, A# - A
Lullabies for my nemesis
Rectified by my promises
Lullabies for my nemesis
Staying dormant in the deep

Verse2:
Met with a harbinger today
Convinced my future was in gray
He asked why I was seeing red?
Why do you wish your enemy dead?

Pre-chorus 2:
Said heís my nemesis
Furtive antagonist
Itís not so clear
But can you hear
My inner voice, itís started singing

Chorus (outro): Am, F, Dm, A#, Am, F, Dm, A#/ E7
Am, C, D, A#, Am, F, D, A# - A

Bridge:
He bore a talisman of truth
He spoke of battles in his youth
Said thereís no honor in revenge
An ephemeral victory so dilute
(So dilute, so dilute, so dilute...)

Chorus (outro): Am, F, Dm, A#, Am, F, Dm, A#/ E7
Am, C, D, A#, Am, F, D, A# - A

Repeat Outro:
Lullaby for my nemesisÖ
Rectified by my promisesÖ
Lullaby for my nemesisÖ
Never wake him from his sleep!

PS: I managed to get it done in time for the original deadline, so hopefully I get extra karma for that  ;)

Thanks so much for the feedback @Dutchbeat , itís what makes all the hours Iíve put in this song and others worth it so much more.  :)

Iím gonna say Iím especially appreciative for the remark about the vocals. This time I spent half the production time on getting them right (they still have some room for improvement but I had to let go at some point.)

Thanks man  ::e-guitar3::

Very impressive @Layerson

It has a prog rock sound to it plus some more modern chunky guitar.

The lead playing is great as well.

Some of the phrasing seems a little but rushed at points on the first verse - at syllables sort of clashes with the drums if that makes sense. The line that ends "ripple through the soul" especially.

But that's a picky point - you've done a great job with the song.

cheers

Thanks @Jurgen  :)

Yup, the vocals and the timing is an issue. I see your point completely and it's a good one.  :ok:

(Don't know if I'll have any more time or energy to fiddle with this song though. I was planning to release it as is pending on if it would get any decent feedback and so far it seems to be up to somewhat up par ... for me at least. It's one of the songs I wanna get out of my system quick, been at it for over a month by now... puh!)

hey @Layerson - I think the vocal thing I raised is a minor point.

I wouldn't hold back releasing it just for that - so I say go ahead and get it out there!

Hi @Layerson

I love the intro, it has everything, including the mystery ...
And when your voice and instrumentation appears ... On the move!
However, I think everything could be improved in terms of mixing, your story is interesting and the melody has enough energy and peculiarity to highlight it ...
I did not know that to live I had to die so many times

Thank you @Mora Amaro La Loba  :)

Yes, there is always plenty of room for improvement as far as my mixing goes but I'm not sure if I could do this any better, well not with my current knowledge at least (...I'm not certain if that is what you suggest or if it is just a statement in general, being a non-english speaker myself ... or perhaps that is what you actually meant to say? ... please  correct me here if I'm off completely  ;) )

Tried to make it into a story and focus less on how many of the Magic Words I was using, however the title and some of the lyrics where a bit forced by the need to include them ... it all felt natural and that's probably one of the things that is magic about these 7 words.

I'm glad you found it interesting at least. I've got to keep working on my vocal expression but the decision to make the vocals quieter and the music is by intent (dunno if that is what you meant by mixing either... perhaps it I'm just blabbing, then please just ignore me  ;) )

@Layerson (/Micke), wow that's a whole study man!! Wow! Love the storytelling in words and the fusion of different styles.
And the musical style, dynamics of singing and the words go hand in hand.. Very clever..
Beautiful piece to listen to, let me know if you have any specific questions for feedback.. If not I'd keep it this way, it's a fantastic job imo..
Thanks for sharing and joining the challenge!!
Love, peace and cheers!

Thanks @Mar T.  ::headphone::

Iím gonna let the song be as it is and Iíve already released it as my second single on Distrokid.

The good thing is that I now know how to master at a correct level,  so Iím gonna release 4 or more other songs in the coming week. They are overdue and the challenge really inspired me to get going again.

The kitchen and Kitcheners are what sparked it, and the feedback alone is what makes it worth the time spent.

Hi @Layerson

Well, they are my things, do not worry ... I was referring, for example, to a base with so much instrumentation I would remove the guitar from time to time more often, so the keyboards stand out and the atmosphere changes, and when the guitar returns to appear, assumes its role of force.
The voice ... I see it well but maybe a little bit of some effect to make it look more magical, more like the whole base ... Battle !!

Ah, now I got it! Itís a crowded mix and youíre right @Mora Amaro La Loba - , some instruments would have sounded better given more space. This is something Iím always trying to improve and eventually will get sorted out.  ::Hoss::

Thanks for pointing that out  ::Rachel::

A BIG song with lots of care put into the planning and production @Layerson . I liked the intro & outro-  spooky and appropriate. The vocals really come through ( maybe its the gravel in your voice, but some good care in the processing there too) and that you saved something for the last chorus.
Those chord progressions are cool too - I`m no expert on the genre  but youvhave the dramatic doom laden sound down :pompom: :pompom:

Thanks @robertkc  :)

Yes, I planned it beginning with the lyrics and focusing lots more on on the vocals than I used to. Still learning with every song and I had to redo the vocals three times  and some of the instruments had to be removed and replaced. I especially gave a lot of attention to the choirs as they carry the song so much. And I did some research too. Kudos on you for noticing all that.  :ok:
