New Layerson/Major Collaboration -- Karma's A Bitch
on: September 24, 2018, 21:07:47
Hello Everyone,

Micke @Layerson and I have another song we're getting ready to release.

Again we're looking for any input that would help us make a better song/recording.

We'd also like to know what genre this song best fits in.

Later,
Stan

   Karma's A Bitch

We live on one earth
under one sun
we've got nothin' else
nowhere else we can turn

So when you steal from the people
to make yourself rich
your soul turns to cinders
and Karma's a bitch

Don't take the commons
for less than a cent
then use your claim
to make us pay rent

pitchforks and torches
sharpened, set on fire,
twilight is coming
coming down to the wire

You say we're unruly
you say we are loud
wait till you face us
as an indivisible crowd

When you steal from the people
to make yourself rich
your soul turns to cinders
and Karma's a bitch
I'm a lyricist seeking music writers to work with.

I think the relentlessly strident and forceful tone of the music.......

.....is perfect for the lyrics and the message.

It drives that message in like a hammer on a nail.

Nice work.....good collaboration.

@smajor @Layerson  - heavy song, both in music and lyrics. May be the reverb on the whole could be tweaked a bit. As for the lyrics: quite dark message. Is Karma indeed a bitch? Was thinking about that- during the kitchen summit when we talked about Karma coins and points.  Maybe one could say : "karma is a stretch" - but bitch rhymes far better off course :-)

Really good work @Layerson and @smajor ! Congratulations!  :ok:

I think the genre would be "industrial" .

Then again I have trouble with genres. I think @MrBouzouki or @Dutchbeat might be best at classifying songs. If I need help I usually ask them.  :)

I liked the song, it's how it has to be, dark, oppressive and insistent, maybe it's my headphones but I would like the bass wave to be more present?

Reminds me a bit of 'Brennan tuats guat', by Hubert von Goisern.
Where the title so aptly means It'll burn very well. The same train of thought, lyrics wise.

Great. I agree with @Mora Amaro La Loba that a more present bass would be adding to the urgency of the song.

Great collab and yet another proof of how great a lyricist @smajor actually is. @Layerson , I'm a fan; a bold piece of music. Fitting the lyrics beautifully.
Stan, who made the great painting?
Kind regards, Gus

Hi @Leonard Scaper , @oorlab , @Bill from November Sound , @Mora Amaro La Loba , and @LePlongeur

Thank you all for your comments.

@oorlab  Karma, as I understand it, is "the sum of a person's actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences". So, given my dim view of those for whom wealth is an end in itself (who act like hoarders piling up money like stacks of dusty newspapers... Bezos and the Waltons),  karma is not going to be full of sweetness and light. That was my thought process anyway.

@LePlongeur  I had to do some research to figure out what you were referring to regarding Hubert von Goisern's song. I agree. Hubert von Goisern and I are kindred spirits... on these songs at least.

I assume you're referring to my avatar on Soundcloud re "painting". It was done through a website that takes any photograph and turns it into a painting... you can choose from the styles of a variety of artists. Here's the link... https://deepart.io/

Later,
Stan

P.S.  I'll leave the reverb tweaking and bass presence for Micke to respond to.

Great feedback @oorlab @Leonard Scaper @Mora Amaro La Loba @LePlongeur and @Bill from November Sound::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb::

This song almost wrote itself, thatís all thanks to @smajor great lyrics and it was an adrenaline rush trough my body when I read them and I did a draft in what seemed like no time at all, which is pretty much the same except for some samples adding some more oriental feel to it. ::dj::

Since april Iíve learned a great deal and @oorlab, youíre correct about the slight overuse of reverb, itís a rookie thing to miss-use effects and maybe itís possible to dial down a bit or decrease the room size. Iíll have look into that and tweak. (Nowadays I sometimes use reverb to move the singer backwards in the mix. Before it was more an attempt to mask my vocals which I couldnít stand, but now Iím past that having listened to it a lot and working objectively with it.)

@Mora Amaro La Loba and @LePlongeur I think youíre on to something.  The first draft had lots of base drive, but as Stan commented discretely, there was ďa wall of soundĒ after the intro. Iíll try to increase the base feel without sacrificing clarity and balance and give it some more low frequency energy. ::Note::

Thanks again for your kind replies. ::heart::

Hi @budhabuilding

Micke and I would love to hear what you come up with. Do you need separate tracks? I assume you do. Contact Micke for those.

By the way... I'm Stan Major... not Stan Johanson. I'm sure the other Stan is a real sweet guy  ::phone::

@budhabuilding Iíll pm you with a Google Drive folder where Iíll upload, just as soon as I had time to bounce the tracks and export the midi an such.

Do you want the audio tracks clean/dry or wet with the effects? (I use Logic if that helps?)

I donít think Iíve exported midi before, the tracks in use are all having 3rd party effects on them I think or are effected by. Donít this very often, so this is a first cover for me... might not have it done in a blink

@Layerson take your time.. please don't use any time based fx like delay chorus reverb. If you use a lot of compression then don't get more then 4b reduction.... or just bypass it...  ;) Could you give me the tempo? or are the tempo changes.. (i don't hear them  ;))
