New Mix Question "I Loved Her (For A Little While)

Hello, Since I've been visiting family for Christmas I haven't had access to any musical instruments at all, so I thought I would spend some time messing around with the Audacity software.

This was recorded on my Tascam DP006 but I uploaded it into Audacity for mixing and noise removal and a few effects.

My question is  - is the quality of the recording adequate?  Don't worry once the after Christmas sales kick in I'm investing in some better stuff than my Tascam and $20.00 (American money) Walmart headphones.   ::headphone::

Words -
She made a choice a number of years ago,
She decided to move on,
It hurt me so, the way she had to go,
I never could have held her long,

But, I loved her, for a little while,
And I held her,
She made me smile,
And I loved her,
She healed me with her embrace,

I think of her from time to time,
I wonder what might have been,
And there have been times,
I've been so lonely,
I could have used a friend

Hi @vincent_stewart - good to hear you're working with Audacity. I've used it in the past and liked it.

The recording of this song (I really like the song btw) sounds clearer than your previous recordings but your vocals are pushed back.

I've also listened to another version you did of this song and there's less instruments and your vocals stand out more (on the Former Phoenix version).

With the new version it sounds like you've got more than one guitar playing similar chords and similar sound so it's a little muddy.

Others will know why or they may disagree of course.

Looking forward to hearing you with your new equipment.

cheers

Hi @vincent_stewart
Mix-wise, I'm not a huge fan of panning instruments hard left and right, but they are recorded well and are clear. Nothing bad at all there. The vocal, on the other hand, is muddy, mixed very low and is very hard to understand.  Are you using the same mic to record everything?  If so, it sounds like you are much too far from the mic and I would recommend simply singing much closer to the mic. -Mark

Thank's @Jurgen & @M57

I was wondering if I could clean up my Tascam recordings using a program like Audacity. It looks like to a certain extent I can, especially room noise.

It does seem like it's not going to be worth effort though and I'll have to record all the songs over. I'll stay away from panning left & right, but I suspect with good equipment I won't need to.

I don't have a mic - I've just used the built in mic on the Tascam.

Thank you for taking the time to listen and for your reply's

Vince

@vincent_stewart  Don't get me wrong, you should pan your instruments. In a recording like yours, the only thing that should be center is the vocal. It needs to sit in its own space. I'm talking about hard panning.  The only time I pan something hard is when it's part of a stereo signal, or a pair of mics.  Again, this is somewhat subjective area, but consider that often people listen to music with only one ear-bud.  I see it all the time with kids 'sharing' a tune.
