Hey @Rewboat , sounds nice!
What kind of feedback are you interested in?  ;)

Everybody is looking for feedback, here in the kitchen it helps when we provide feedback to others, people who provide feedback will receive in return. That's just how it works..

Thanks for sharing, that was a nice listen!
Cheeeeeers..

VERY cool tune.....had to listen twice to really get the feel. I think it is about self realization.

I also think it could use some more low energy in the mix....something to maybe anchor it down a bit.

I have no idea what this is about @Rewboat ! That's partially because, to me, the vocals are not high enough in the mix  and so are drowned out by the backing. Interesting and melodic sound - very Beach Boys. A bit of bass in the mix would make it more solid. I would listen to more of your songs.  ::thumb::

Interesting. I've listened to people like Talking Heads, Gong etc. in the past so I'm used to 'alternative'
I agree the vocals aren't separated enough from the backing so the vocals are lacking clarity.
I also think the bottom end seems to be a bit thin like it has been filtered out.

I'm thinking that a good bass guitar thing might fill that bottom out nicely.

@Leonard Scaper @MrBouzouki
First off thanks!

The low end is actually something I've been wondering about for a long time.  There is a bass guitar part buried in there--but when I am mastering, I find that upping the bass muddies everything up. Any tips on how to have a low end while keeping the mids and trebles crisp?

@Mar T. -- I listen to a lot of the folks on/affiliated with the kitchen soundcloud page. I can drop my two cents more often.

To be more specific, I'm looking for feedback on the lyrical matter to see if my messages are coming across. This song was an experiment in using narrative techniques to evoke imagery as opposed to more literal and straight-forward words set to music. Since it's kind of like encoding messages, I'm most curious to know how people are interpreting or misinterpreting the song.

Thanks for taking a listen

@Rewboat - a tip for bass I picked up (from a Mastering Engineering podcast of all things) is that to make the bass more prominent you don't just raise the volume of the instrument.

Instead you boost the higher/mid bass frequencies for your bass instrument and that adds more punch. If you just raise the volume as a whole all you do is put loads more energy into the
low bass and as you say it just sounds muddy. I would do this at the mixing stage when you have more control over the individual instruments as the guy on the podcast was talking of a rescue mission
for the bass at the mastering stage. There was a limit to what he could do then. Have a fiddle around with the EQ and see what happens ;-)

Just had another listen and I do hear that bass....I think it could be worked up more to really help out the song. I would be trying a High Pass Filter in front of a compressor followed by an EQ bump at around 700 - 900 Hz. HPF at around 60 - 80 Hz.....compressor set with a medium fast attack and and release......something along those lines.

There is some good info in this thread:

https://www.songwriter-forum-kitchen.com/forum/songwriting-ingredients/26/mixproduction-how-to-manage-the-low-frequencies-in-your-mix/2578/

I'd like to see those lyrics as they are quite intriguing. Consider posting them.

Yeah, cool song. Like others have said, I heard the B.Boys influence. As far as the vocal down in the mix, not sure if that's intentional like every thing R.E.M. ever did or just a monitor issue. It's all about what YOU want it to sound like and/or take the feedback from others.

Over the years I've worked in studios with monitors from a couple of hundred dollars to ten thousand dollar monitors. What did I do when mixing? Listened to everything through 2 or 3 different sets of reference monitors. Now that I've retired from studio work, I mix on $100 Bose computer speakers, mix it down to an mp3, then listen on a boom box, then on large Bose home theatre monitors and even my ipad. Even then things never sound like what I hear in my feeble head.  So, experiment, experiment, experiment and keep the songs coming!

I love this site for the endless CREATIVE variety!

@Leonard Scaper @MrBouzouki  Super insightful- that'll help me with a problem I've had for years

And @Mr Sydney I appreciate the words of encouragement. I'm not a pro by any stretch of the imagination, but I do have a clear idea of what I want my vocals to sound like and can generally get the 1960s-70s sound I've always loved.

I'm working on something now closer to a Talking Heads vibe so I'll be sure to implement all these ideas.
Thanks again guys!

@Leonard Scaper

The Lyrics--

We found a cluster of cells
Is this the girl I should marry?
He's awfully charming but he makes me uncomfortable
You're not like other folks
I bought a cool red sports car
Yes he's your father by blood
Orange you glad I didn't say banana
Do you really think the earth could die?
What do you mean 'there's a word for that?'
For all I am and all I think and I feel
Am I cliche for thinking I was original?
Is there anything
That no one's seen?
Maybe it's all an illusion
Or something put us here
I need to tell the world our eyes are just onions
Has no one realized that?
You can't be everything that everyone wants
I'm not a 'girly girl'
It's strictly scripted
Can we change this line?
Let's help each other out.
What do you mean there's a book on that
And folks through history have tried it all out?
Am I cliche for thinking I'd make a difference?
Is there anything
That I can do?
Guess in the meantime I could use the cash.
It's fun taking walks with you
In twenty years
Oh god, I've been on a planet
I've got kids in school
And I was never a genius
Just a mouth
And a penis
But hey, ain't Dad cool?
What do you mean,'this is how it ends?'

Great lyrics....intriguing......

So they had to get married but it worked out ok because they found some self realization between them over the years through their interactions.

I wonder if they still find him uncomfortable after twenty years. I wonder if she got over worrying if she was a girly-girl. She definitely is not.

It is never strictly scripted....any line can be changed.  ;)
