New Song - What We Call Progress
on: May 30, 2019, 12:36:31
I took a break from writing for a while, working on some other projects, but I had some ideas I wanted to get down, and this song is what came from that! I guess alternative would be the style, but it's a mix of a few, it's quite relaxed, and that's the style I'm enjoying creating at the moment. anyway, let me know what you think!

What We Call Progress

Do you remember,
We used to sit around,
Playing games in the sun,
Having beers when we were young

Now itís all changed,
And I canít seem to slow it down,
Canít you help me,
Canít you help me

Now We stand here,
We pray to sit around,
Wasting time on the run,
Having lives come undone

Now itís all changed,
And I canít seem to slow it down,
Canít you help me,
Canít you help me

Wow, very creative! Beautiful and recognisable story.. Love the music.
The voice sounds a bit eh.. 'plastic' to me, doesn't have to do with your
singing, but I guess the mic you used or EQing in the mids..
What mic did you use? And did you use EQ on the vocal track?
Thanks for sharing man, pleasure to listen to!!

Love, peace and cheers!

What emotions your song awakens! Congratulations, you have achieved that a song that is almost a loop will continue to excite you in its repetition! @JedLong

As for the voice ... On the one hand I agree with @Mar T.  and on the other I am discovering that the tastes are already so open that everything can be worthwhile if it sounds harmonious, although that does not mean that taking care of the recording and mixing in terms of voice, you get that the story, in addition to exciting you, has a particular sound that enhances it.  ::thumb:: ::thumb::

@Marcus Nalgaber Thanks man, glad you like it!

@Mora Amaro La Loba  & @Mar T. Appreciate the kind words, glad you liked the song! I actually don't have a mic haha So you're definitely right, it's a bit tinny/plasticy, as I record all my songs singing directly in to my laptop and then mix and use EQ to get it as good as it can be. I just need to invest in a mic, which I want to do, I'm just indecisive when choosing, I want to invest in a good quality one, so I want to wait and get it right, it's a lot of hassle trying to get the vocals up to scratch without a mic haha

Ah in that case @JedLong , you did an excellent job EQ-ing, because I think it's impossible to further improve the original mic recording. Good job!
If you're searching for a mic to start with I definately recommend the Rode NT1a vocal solution. I use it myself.

If you have questions about mics, feel free to ask them!

Cheers!

I love this track,

Nice synths with a chill beat and vocals are excellent. Nicely put together.
I listen to a radio station Hotel Costes and this sounds just like the music on there.

The keys are warm, with that bell cutting through. (did you use detuning or tremolo or something to give that detuned sound ?)
The arrangement (imo) sounds just right with the beat kicking in and dropping out perfectly.

Sounds bang on. Have listened to it a few times now, will check it out on bins later.

Nice one!    ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb::

Hi @JedLong

Firstly I really like your lyrics, I read them first before hearing the song and a lot is conveyed in just those few lines.

When I listened to the song, at the start, I thought I wasn't going to like it. The vocals sounded too processed for my taste, but once it got it going and that percussion bit started, I found myself really getting into it.

This is really catchy and got me listening to it a couple of times.

Great job - and I think you should get  yourself a cheap mic if you can - would make such a difference!

cheers

@Kevin Dixon thank you, really nice to hear, appreciate the comments! With the bells I use a pitch shifter, to create a harmony with itself and create a slightly detuned and higher pitch sound to cut through.
I really liked working on the beat, I wanted to keep it really simple like the rest of the song, but recording a moving EQ to bring it out in the chorus really helped, thanks for the listen!

@Jurgen thank you, I try not to get too complicated with the lyrics, but I also want to convey a specific message with a small amount of words, so Iím glad you liked it.
Really appreciate you giving it the time and getting in to it, I think my processes style can put some people off, but Iím glad you like it! And yeah definitely, a mic will change things massively, Iíll definitely be investing soon.

This has something about it @JedLong.

Maybe the combination of the lyric itself and vocal recording itself but it sounds vulnerable.

Getting closer and closer to 60 now,  I can still remember this ... ;-)

Quote
Do you remember,
We used to sit around,
Playing games in the sun,
Having beers when we were young

The listener gets the impression that life and time has overtaken all the possibilities, the desires , it's all spinning out of control.

Sometimes these simple messages connect far more than more complicated subjects.

Good Job

P.S As @Mar T. said Rode is a good choice, I have an NT1A. One thing to be aware of is condenser mics like this need a (phantom) external power supply of 48V , usually supplied via the mic interface.  You would need to budget for an interface like this with an inbuilt  pre-amp to sit between the mic and PC or Mac.

This article might help. A bit dated but the essentials are there. Knowledge is power ;-)

I think this is a unique and infectious piece of music. That is not something that is very easy to achieve and you have definitely accomplished it.

The repetitive nature of the lyrics and especially the very cool vocal presentation are what makes this one work so well for me. The lo-fi nature of these vocals just really works for the song.

You know, there are big league studio engineers that would be trying all sorts of processing tricks on vocals that they tracked through very expensive microphones to get the effect that you achieved by using what you had at hand......if they had a vision of how this song came out.

Or maybe they'd be tracking them through a laptop microphone.

@MrBouzouki thank you, Iím glad you like the song and the message. Like you said itís a simple one with few words, but thatís what I wanted to get across, that you can say a lot without complicating lyrics and just singing about experience, appreciate the kind words!
And thanks for the help, Iíll check that mic out and see if itís for me!

@Leonard Scaper Iím glad you like it, I really wanted to capture the catchy side of a song, but keep it with my style, lo-fi and minimal definitely, so thank you!
And thank you! Haha thatís a big compliment, singing in to my laptop isnít ideal, but it does get me working, and gets me learning EQ, Filters and compression techniques! Thanks for the listen!
