Hi all...
Im working on a cd that has to come out in april...lots of work to be done still!
The theme and title is: Love and war
Lots of stories from love, war but most from perspective of my own family
This song "Spanish Flu" is about my great grandfather who died of the disease aged 48.
In the lyrics I used a little childrens rhyme of that period, I sing it now, but would be great to be sung by child voices
Maybe one or more of you have children, nieces, nephews with nice voices..
Let me hear your input!!! (the little rhyme is at ca. 3.53 in the song)

Spanish flu

Life was hard, life was bitter
I see your picture and you look so old
You were no craftsman like your father
You were condemned to bend and fold

The great war passed your country village
But then it came like a thief in the night
Confusion, fear and total distress
No way you could ever win the fight

The horror took more than twenty million
You lost your life like so many men before

Your back was broke and your eyes were blurred
Your skin bones knocked and your tongue was furred
You tried so hard but you never got well
Some call it flu but I call it hell

Life was cruel, life was fearsome
I see your picture, do you look like me
I am no craftsman like our fathers
But am I as different as I wanna be

The great war passed outside your window
But you were not there anymore to see

Your back was broke and your eyes were blurred
Your skin bones knocked and your tongue was furred
You tried so hard but you never got well
Some call it flu but I call it hell

I had a little bird
It?s name was Enza
I opened up the window
And in-flu-enza

Your back was broke and your eyes were blurred
Your skin bones knocked and your tongue was furred
You tried so hard but you never got well
Some call it flu but I call it hell

Hi Newland,

Has the spellchecker auto corrected what you typed? Are you really "...working on acid..." or should it be "... working on a CD..."? ;D Quite a confession!

Cool song. Great tone on the guitar. I like that you let the music breathe - the vocal isn't relentless.

The bridge; i think it would work with children for sure. My only slight concern is that it comes across as quite a witty play on words. Is that what you were after?

Good story. Good song.

Haha Digger you're right it must CD.... I think LOL
Hum you mean the bridge a witty play with words? I guess you're right it is but it was
a children verse sang in the times of the Spanish flu, I couldn't resist using it
But I cannot find children willing to sing it LOL

Dutch beat thank you for your kind words!!!

I tried without success to get a children's choir for a song so I faked it. There used to be a voice in GarageBand called 'Micky mouse', so I sang a few individual parts using that. Then a mate pitch shifted more parts using logic, until I had a children's choir. I never got it completely finished and it wouldn't stand up to close scrutiny but it did work 😃

It was a really cheesy song for charity, here it is

Wow thanks for the tip GTB!

Haha Digger you're right it must CD.... I think LOL

Funny! I wondered when I read it....

Agree that there's great pace, flow and story-telling to this..

Will be interested to hear if GTB's suggestion with the Mickey Mouse voice effect works! Really enjoyed it and agree that the children's voices would work for the rhyme..

Hey Newland!

First..you got me wondering if ACID was the latest music trend that's going around ;D
Anyways, this is really good!! That groove on the guitar and how you played it.. I know the theme is quite heavy but it really livened up my day which has been rather mundane..
Definitely looking forward the the final product.
Thanks for sharing!

Hey Newland,
Wow what a presents here in this kitchen...
I like your vocal, it has a nice edge. Production sounds fantastic,
you might remember I had some suggestions on the production of some
of your other songs, but this one sounds spot on to me.
I love the acoustic guitar sound and the transients of the strings.
Unfortunately (for you) I have no children so I can't help with
the child choir. Would sound nice though, cool idea!
Well done, I really enjoyed this listen!

and listening again (waiting for the children's vocals.... ;D ;D ;D ;D), what a nice song. and i hear you keep tweaking the instrumental mix, sounds good

ah, there are the children's vocals.....wow, that is a change....i am in dubio, it sounds good, but it seems to me perhaps if you use it it needs to be longer, or children's vocals need to be in the last part in some way too, it seems abrupt...it worked well, but it also breaks the atmosphere and flow of the song in my opinion

i don't know really....i wonder what others think of it

sorry for just thinking out loud like this....probably not useful at all what i saying at the moment

Nono Dutchbeat it's good to hear your opinion... The song is already quite long so I don't want to make it any longer.
Should it help if I sing softly along with them?
