October Vow
on: October 17, 2019, 01:24:01
I have mixed feelings about fall- tried to sum them up in this song. Its old but some colours added recently.
If you enjoy a folk waltz...

 October Vow

       V1
when the lights of the last fishing boat
go winking out o`er the sea
and the eyelids of my children
are saying "yes" and "no" to sleep

when the trees on the hills are all bundled up
in their capes of calico
the golden harvest moonrise
looks down into my soul

      C
with a curse, a whistle and a bow
I make an October vow

       V2
all through these days they thresh the grain
`til the windy blades are still
I stand before my children then
an oak bidding swallows farewell

for down in the dark, dark cellar
with the apples and plums so red
all the days of my youth lie
asleep in their blankety bed

        C
with a curse,a whistle and a bow
I make an October vow

        V3
my life I`ll live beholden
to autumn`s unbending law
like the green leaves of the Rowan
I`ll darken and deepen and fall

         C
with a curse,a whistle and a bow
I make an October vow
forgive as the worm forgives the plough
when I make an October vow

good old coutnry vibes...
with a curse, a whistle and a bow, vocal line, is drowning a bit in the violin sound.
But the Violin suits this song well, it is only a matter of EQ and volume .

Hola @robertkc

I do not know if it will be the day, it is raining here, cold water that washes the streets still full of summer ... What a beautiful song, how sweet and how deep!
I love the chorus and when you double your voice.
I like this image
"with a curse, a whistle and a bow
I make an October vow"

A folk waltz indeed.......it moves gracefully. I really look forward to your new material @robertkc . This is a good one with lots of wonderful imagery.

forgive as the worm forgives the plough
when I make an October vow

........that is such a cool image and sentiment. A really well crafted lyric.

Love that violin....nicely arranged.

Good to know an old timey waltz can stiil find an audience ::Rachel::
Thanks @Lane , @Chris Spruit , @Mora Amaro La Loba , @Leonard Scaper  & @Kolohe  for brightening my stormy west coast day with your comments.
Chris- I agree the violin on the chorus needs a tweak... wouldn`t have heard the need without your comment (love that about this forum :ok: :ok:)

Thanks for the positive comments @Zedd ... sadly the fiddle player isn`t me .I reduced the dbs on it now to sit well back of vocals.

1996 eh?
13th of October, 1972 i made an October vow. And still no regrets.
But apart from this, this is truly a wonderful song.
Wonder why you kept it from us so long.
One day, when I have little to do, I will make a playlist for in the car. And this one will be on that playlist.
And, like Chris, my eyelid says yes too.
Kind regards, Gus

Really liking this one Robert. Takes me to a less complex more friendly place. I have liked your lyric writing from day 1.

Nice acoustic tapestry. Who played the violin? It sounds real if it isn't.

Got to agree with everyone's comments on this one @robertkc - this is a really good song.

The singing and violin are great and I really like the guitar sound and is there a mandolin in there?

The words paint so many great pictures of your October - it's Spring this side of the world and we've got 30c weather here in Sydney this week. So I'm appreciating these images of Autumn/Fall.

cheers

Not hiding my older Soundcloud songs @LePlongeur , but not promoting either...I can`t listen to most myself except to discover how many ways they can be improved :pompom: That year (`96) a friend was turning 40 as the leaves fell-seems funny to have been feeling so much older then!
Way to go on sticking to your  own October Vow :loveit:

@Timothy Smith  Thanks for your comments- glad you liked the simple folkstyle. The fiddle is the real thing, generated by this program
https://www.pgmusic.com/bbwin.htm  and massaged /comped from mutiple iterations in  DAW. I wish I were more of an instrumental wizz, in the meantime thankful there are ways for plunkers to package their songs acceptably :ok:

@Jurgen  Having experienced warm winters in Asia and now living back in Canada, I tend to tough out the Northern chills with a mix of hibernation and extreme extercise.
Thanks for your likes on this song.Yes, there is a mandolin in there.

Robert
