Old Country Song (Sketch)
on: July 28, 2019, 00:34:35
I wrote this in October 2018. I’m happy with the lyrics and the overall form. This first recording is a sketch I’ll use as a reference to develop it into a final piece.

I’m thinking in the end it will have electric guitar with a bit of chorus for some shimmer, drums that have a slight smooth jazz feel for the Verse... changing to a solid Rock beat at the Bridges and then to a more easy going Folk Rock beat at the Chorus.

Sort of an Indie Rock overall feel

Done in one take on my iPad using the integral microphone with GarageBand.

Regardless of my described intent above, I’m open to all thoughts, suggestions, critique etc.

sounds good @1roomstudio  - fine quality for an iPad recording. The lyrics sound good - would be helpful if you posted them too.
Interesting Neil Young / Springsteen vibe.

Thank you for the feedback @oorlab ... looking forward to getting a new laptop so I can use decent microphones and DAW again... (mine died about a week ago)

However! It has been an inspiration working with minimal tools again...

Here are the lyrics: hmmmm... I guess I wrote this in 2016, not ‘18 like it says above... time passes without me now and then!

OLD COUNTRY SONG
05/29/16 Elkwood Bar
                                                                                           6/8

On a long desert highway on a dark lonely night              Cmaj7        Em7
When you need miles behind you before the daylight
Your eyelids grow weary in the light of the moon
Desperately in need of an old country tune                      Cmaj7          Em7   Dsus4

I get love and mental health tips reggae n' Jesus             D           Am
I know all of these stations are trying to please us           D           Am
I get electronic musings and the jazz is confusing            D           Am
I need stimulation to stop me from snoozing                      D           Am   Dsus4

I get bootleg Dead concerts and I listen for a while        Cmaj7            Em7
Sometimes a little country creeps into their style
But the Dead don't bring comfort like a sad lonesome tune
When Hank Williams paints clouds on the face of the moon    Cmaj7         Em7  Dsus4

Hypnotized in the dark the white line keeps the beat              G           C
You can tap on the dashboard but you can't tap your feet
In the desert in Nevada the roads are so long
              G                                             F       F                    C            Em7
I'm just looking for a station with an old             country song

I get static n' silence rock rap n' violence
Piano concertos n' opera galore
I've been fiddling a while with the radio dial
I'm beginning to think I can't take any more

I get local news daily n' talk shows about cars
I get talkshows about aliens from Mexico and Mars
Headlights in the distance shoot up to the sky
Another UFO is passing me by

Hypnotized in the dark the white line keeps the beat
You can tap on the dashboard but you can't tap your feet
In the desert in Nevada the roads are so long
I'm just looking for a station with an old country song

Hi @1roomstudio

Great lyrics and song!!! I find the sound is very good, you know how to use your gear...

I loved the melody of
"I get bootleg Dead concerts and I listen for a while..."

Very pleasant to listen to...

Very cool live vibe to this.......I love how you played the guitar. Nice chord at the very end.

Hi @1roomstudio :)

I definately would wanna hear the finished song. I do most of my songs in multiple takes per track and I'm always impressed by one take performances. This did feel like a continuous performance, no matter if it was, it sounds great. Like it this way and and hope it will have that kind of feeling in the final production. The effects on it gave it a subtle push too, liked them as well.  ::headphone::

Great lyrics and song @1roomstudio - and I like the lofi sound of it as well.

This version is very good and it will be interesting to hear it when you re-record it. This has a very natural sounding stripped down feel to it and some of this feel might be lost when you record it again.

But maybe not of course!

Looking forward to hearing this one develop.

cheers

Thank you @Mora Amaro La Loba , @Leonard Scaper , @Jurgen @Layerson

For kind words and encouragement.

It will be a while before I take the next step with this... want to get my new laptop (not here yet😬) and get my studio fully functional again.

Understood and agreed that I don’t want to lose that “stripped down” natural feel. That’s why I plan on using this take as reference track. Definitely don’t want to end up with an over-produced sound... just more of Country Band feel.

Onward! 😎

People often say that a sign of a good song is that it still works stripped back to the basics.
Well that's what came across to me, if it works with just voice and guitar then you are on to something.

I have no idea what driving for miles and miles and miles over similar terrain is like but I sort of get it from this song.

@1roomstudio Nice work, vintage sounding. The sound sometimes reminds me a bit of Fleetwood Mac or the Eagles. Judging from the first line in your lyric, the latter may have inspired you.

I am not sure if you did this on purpose, judging from the lyric, but I get the feeling that you could to try to straighten the timing a bit more. You cannot really tap your feet to it, the rhythm is slightly unstable. But then, I suspect that was on purpose.

Hmmm... 🤔it never occurred to me that I used the opening line from Hotel California 😝
I definitely was influenced by the Eagles... apparently  more than I thought. So that was subliminal....but the blatant theft was the use of the D chord as the pivot to three different resolutions. (The Dead only had two resolutions but one with two variations.) That’s why I mention the Dead in the song.... so no one would think it was subliminal.... weird 👽

Regarding the rhythm... no, 6/8 is not a toe-tapper at this bpm... it was meant more to imitate wheels turning and the rhythm of the white line on the road. The 6/8 shifts to a different accent pattern in each of the three parts.... another move that keeps your toes in the air.... so ... yes... intentional 😎

Oh... and Fleetwood Mac! ... you are very kind. Thank you 🙏

Thank you @MrBouzouki for the kind words and encouragement.

I’ve done such drives literally hundreds of times... once the inspiration came to me (a book from my brother on “UFOs in Nevada”) the song almost wrote itself... I love it when that happens! 😎

AHA! Whenever I perform this piece, people who have experienced that particular “road trip phenomenon” respond with enthusiasm. 😎

Thank you for sharing @Lane

Well... I finally got a new laptop for work and I loaded Reaper on it so I could get back to work on this...

Tonight I felt like it was getting somewhere. Next step ... some automation... then the vocals.

Stay tuned!😎
