@ProgRockDan  - true, the first 30 seconds were totally random. I was testing a new Piano VST plugin, and liked what I just coincidentaqlly played. I added the shortwave and Chinese poetry and then got the idea for the science fiction story.  It is like you are dialling through shortwave frequencies on a receiver and then hear this message.
I don't know about an extended fade out - that is a coincidence. Off course we can do a remix.

Very cool song idea @oorlab with some nice human details in the lyrics of the spaceman`s new home.
The lead vocal and harmonies on the chorus are really good
For me all the effects/found sounds work except the opening Chinese poetry...I found I was trying to figure out "why?" as you began the first verse. I know that`s where that`s you began the song concept so go ahead and ignore my objection!
I always enjoy the creative freedom you bring to your music ....and your preference for simple arrangements which serves this song well.

Thanks @robertkc  - you were not the first one mentioning the 'whyness' (is that good English?)  of the intro with the Chinese poetry
So I made an new mix
https://soundcloud.com/oorlab/on-this-planet-shortmix
I am curious for  @ProgRockDan  's opinion on this new mix.
In retrospect I think the poetry readings from Librivox and Shortwave radio are a vehicle to get creativity flowing, but in the end should't stand in the way of the song.
@Dutchbeat  - I checked the panning , and put the backing vocals left right in opposite...

I connected with the story more on this take @oorlab
The counterpoint vocals are really good :ok: and nothing distracts now... in fact I thought more choral voices or strings behind the "on this day" section could work.

I like this mix....really like the song, @oorlab .

As @robertkc says, this version feels more accessible. But I'll be very bold and say that this might even work best if you start right in with the vocals. I have done that a few times now and it gives the song a more mainstream and focused feel. Your vocals really sound good and for my taste I like hearing them right at the start.

You could find places for those early effects later in the song.
"The main thing is to have a gutsy approach....but use your head." Julia Child

"In a world of robotic conformity, the only originality left in music is the imperfections" Eric Craptone

"Special thanks to Steve Gleason for making me who I am today." Leonard Scaper

That is a bold & good idea , @Leonard Scaper  - I'll use it for a next track. In the meantime I have heard this Planet  song quite a lot of times. Looking forward doing new tunes.

Hey @oorlab

I've listened to the short mix and long mix and prefer the short one.

I like the idea of the short wave tones resolving into the song. I wonder if you could have it breaking through periodically during the song too almost as if the signal isn't fully resolved. This is different to all-through the track but would give the idea of pockets of interference.

If you want percussion at the beginning I think you want metallic percussion not wooden. The wood is too organic a sound to my ears.
I feel a metallic sound would work better with the short wave tones and possibly suggest a science-themed track.

I'm not sure if any of this is any good but as usual you are engaging in original sonic landscapes.

I like this piece, it's very interesting.

I feel the intro could be enhanced in the long version if the chinese poetry wasn't quite as prominent and also to be phasing in some way, in order to better create the feel of the radio changing. Because the vocals are consistently the same volume while the noise is changing. It's a nice soundscape nonetheless.

Personally I find the higher frequencies mid song, a bit annoying. They can still be there but more spread out and less volume because by the time the song has started I'm interested in following the song more than the background noise.

Hi @Goatrelated - thanks for seeking this out. Indeed there are now 2 versions, one with
https://soundcloud.com/oorlab/on-this-planet-featuring-progrockdan
and one without Chinese poetry.
https://soundcloud.com/oorlab/on-this-planet-shortmix
I use these Librivoxreadings when I am looking for some inspiration and Chinese, Japanese is so alien to my ears, it has a musical effect. But I understand that it also could be seen / heard as a gimmick.
The poem I used was:
I Pass Through the Lu Dukedom with a Sigh and a Sacrifice for Confucius  ( author Emperor Xuanzong of Tang 唐玄宗 - reader Vivian Chan)

Which is translated on Librivox as

O Master, how did the world repay Your life of long solicitude?
–The Lords of Zou have misprized your land,
And your home has been used as the palace of Lu....
You foretold that when phoenixes vanished, your fortunes too would end,
You knew that the captured unicorn would be a sign of the dose of your teaching....
Can this sacrifice I watch, here between two temple pillars,
Be the selfsame omen of death you dreamed of long ago?
