Original Song "Radical Blues"
on: December 27, 2018, 08:57:47
Greetings,

I've been working on some original songs to be performed with solo bass, vocals, and looping. So here's a clip of my song "Radical Blues". Any feedback would be appreciated, and thanks for listening.

Radical Blues

Gold wrapper whirling
Church steeple spikes the sky
Heís smoking his last cigarette
As cars go zooming by
His smoke hits cement
And he turns to go

(Chorus)
But these feelings that he fought
Like a fly he canít swat
He canít let it go
He canít let it go
Like a child without a home
Like a dog without a bone

Bad news in the paper
Bad news on the box
So heís roaming, yeah heís roaming now
He just wants to talk, about disappearing grizzly bears
And diamonds in the Congo

Chorus

Tired of the mean streets, and all the urban sprawl
So he packed up his backpack
To get away from it all.
Like a salmon he roamed, but a hostel ainít a home
No a hostel ainít a home.

He just wants a quiet life, football in the front yard
A little baby and a wife, it canít be that hard
Green grass in the suburbs, angels in the snow

Chorus

I love this concept....very bold and very well done with some nice tight playing as well. The song works nicely with this format.  I was definitely caught up in the performance.

As far as constructive feedback.......watch your mic technique as there were times when you were too close and caused a bit of vocal distortion and times when you were too far away. Also watch your instrument levels as there were a couple of distorted notes on the bass.

I'd love to hear more of this style from you as I really enjoyed listening.

Thanks for your comments, Leonard. I appreciate the feedback. I still struggle a bit with singing, playing, and clicking pedals on and off. I'll try to smooth that out with more practice.

I still struggle a bit with singing, playing, and clicking pedals on and off.

I am remembering back when I first began to actually sing and play guitar at the same time.....it was a supreme challenge. Throwing a microphone into that mix later on was definitely a further complication. Then, in later years as a performer, I threw a foot pedal operated vocal harmonizer and the learning curve began anew.

So.........I am feeling your growth pain here.  :)

I find your lyrics describe a heavy reality of a lot of people... I liked your song but I think the same as @Leonard Scaper, I'm sure that in your next song you'll have taken care of controlling your closeness or separation from the microphone to avoid distorting your voice.

I enjoyed your song and performance video @bear bard . The bass riff suits the song and lyrics held my interest.
Hats off to you for sharing your demo- I look forward to where you`ll take the use of that live loop tech.

Robert

I listened twice, earlier and today again.
I like the result as a very quirky (I believe they say in English) song.

There are some things I would like to ask, if you donít mind:
Is this Ďbarrení recording a choice or a thing that couldnít be avoided?
Have you used flat wounds?
Is songwriting the overriding facor or are you going to arrange/instrumentalise it further? In that case shifting more towards performing your song.

But I must say that once I got used to this very different approach, I like it a lot.

Kind regards, Gus

Hi Gus,

Thanks for your response, I appreciate the feedback. Regarding your questions:

The "barren" recording, as you call it, is indeed by choice. I'm interested in both songwriting and performing. Hence, I'm trying to figure out ways to arrange the songs that could be interesting to perform in a solo context. To do this I'm using a looping pedal and a few other effects, like delay and reverb.

And yes I use flat wound strings. I love them.

Warm regards,

Kevin

Thanks, Gus @LePlongeur for bumping this cool tune. I am in the middle of tracking today and taking a break before I track a bass line....so this was a good one to listen to again.

Yeah.....I see those flat wounds @bear bard . I am about to reach for my 1969 Gibson EB3 with tape wounds.

That vintage Gibson with tape wounds must have some vibe to it. Good luck with the recording. I'd like to hear it sometime.

I like this @bear bard.

I think one of the key things for you performance-wise is the actual position of the microphone.

If you had it so you were singing over the top of the mic you wouldn't have to move your head and have less disconnection from you playing pose. If you look at your video you have a clear head movement for every phrase so the chances of getting it into the right place each time are slim.

Overall I'm digging the groove of this track. Less can be more sometimes and something like this gives the spaces for the song to breathe.
