Original songs

Hi guys

as I mentioned in the 'Me' forum, I was directed here by Acoustic Alice, would really appreciate any feedback on my stuff :) thanks in advance!

https://soundcloud.com/jthargreaves/on-my-mind-2016

Lyrics:

I don't care what anyone might say or do
I belong to you, I belong to you
I couldn't help it even if I wanted to
I belong to you, I belong to you
There's nothing I can do about it, some things I can't change
I belong to you, I belong to you
It's out of my control, I'm too far gone over the edge
I belong to you, I belong to you

You're on my mind

I don't know what I'm going to do
I don't want to be set free
'Cause part of me holds on to you
And you hold on to me
I come alive, I come alive
You're on my mind, you're on my mind

I've given up on struggling against the truth
I belong to you, I belong to you
I realise no secrets hide between we two
I belong to you, I belong to you

You're on my mind

Hey James,

your song on my mind is a wonderful singer-songwriter ballad. Your voice is stunning and I have no idea why you have not put it way more upfront....hint hint. (It seems like an unwritten law here in the forum to either pan the vocals left or right or keep it in the back).

What a wonderful lovesong. regretless love - wonderful.

And yes....welcome to the Kitchen.

Cheers
Heiko

Hi Siobhan, thank you, that's very nice of you!

I suppose as a guitar teacher I tend to always get a little frustrated when I cant hear the guitar parts nice and clear, so I tend to always work to make them as clear as possible, sometimes unfortunately at the expense of the vocals!

I'm glad you like the song :) I'll go check out some of yours now...

James

Hi James,

I like your melodic song with the catchy chorus! Also the variating guitar accompaniment is very convincing. After listening to the song twice, I liked it even more, although there crept in pretty soon an earworm "on my mind"  ;) (which prevents me from hearing songs too often ...)

Nice guitar sounds. Perfect mix and stereo spread on the guitars. Not sure why the vocals have to suffer at the expense of the guitars. I would suggest listening to 'More than Words' by Extreme and remixing the vocals to be comparable in level with the guitar mix of that song. Just a suggestion. The song is an enjoyable listen as is (but we all here are musicians....the regular folk are gonna want the vocal more upfront  ;) )

But ffs, this is ridiculously well done! Guitars are fab, same thing goes for the vocals. First @acoustic-alice and now you, what is this? New Wave Of British Acoustic Singer Songwriters ????  Welcome btw!
Not much more to say, nothing to complain about and I could go on for days praising this but I rather spend that time checking out the rest of yur stuff
Wait as second, maybe the vocals should be just a tad up in the mix ...

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I've got a new one on the go at the moment, will try to post tonight or tomorrow and will boost the vocal level alot more, but hopefully not at the expense of the guitars - a fine line to walk!

@Jambrains - yeah me and @acoustic-alice  know each other, she introduced me to you guys on here.

@jurgen - thanks! I always want to be able to pick out the individual notes on the guitar by listening (guitar teacher syndrome) so perhaps thats why I always have it very loud. Seasick Steve is a v popular performer over in England, and he often has the guitar super-loud and the vocals slightly buried, perhaps I had that in my head and was copying him? not sure!

@cosignsessions - thanks re guitar tone. I was lucky enough to be able to get my hands on a Fishman Rare Earth pickup for my acoustic (the same brand of pickup that Jon Gomm uses) so can luckily get a really crisp tone without the combined use of a high-end condenser mic. a Godsend!

@Catwendish - glad you liked it :) and thanks for the feedback. it's always a fine line to tread with repetition in songs, isn't it? just enough and the song gets stuck in your head, too much and it becomes insanely annoying! But its always fun for me learning to do it better I guess!

Hi James,

Firstly, I really admire the way you play the guitar – it sounds fantastic and interestingly intricate but yet feels effortless and soothing at the same time! :) I really enjoyed listening and really like your style and the ambience that you created.

I was listening using my headphones and at times the ‘flicking sound’ made during playing does feel a bit too dominant and distracting, especially when compared to the level of the vocal (I’m not sure if it is noticeable that much when played on speakers). Don’t get me wrong I really like the guitar quality and the different textures to its sound, however, the ‘flick’ feels to be competing with the vocal and focusing the listener away from the voice.

And in this case the voice has an equally great musicality and quality about it which deserves to be heard better and appreciated. I really like the sound of your voice and the way you built the harmonies. And given the theme of the song and its message I think it would sound even more beautiful if the vocal is given that bit more prominence.

Thanks for sharing!
Great song! + looking forward to hear more of your original work :)

Wow - love love love this!

Great song - and I'm with the others - fantastic guitar playing ..

Agree that the guitars are drowning the vocal a teeny bit so I would alter the levels a little...

Very catchy and very lovely!

Thanks @Zedd glad you like.

In response to the overwhelmingly 'turn-the-vocals-up' feedback (ha ha) I have mixed the latest one accordingly...

Is this a bit closer to what you guys had in mind?

@jameshargreaves  May I suggest that you start a new post with the new composition you linked to soundcloud? I think it deserves it's own thread  ;)
