Painter

Hello all,

I hope you are all well! I have been absent for a while, but I wrote this quite personal piece today and wanted to post on here as its been so long.

This song is about trying unsuccessfully to explain to people when I feel anxious or sad, and wishing I could paint or sketch it in order to enable people to feel the emotions I feel.

As always all feedback welcome.

Thanks!

Lyrics:
Lately I dont feel how I used to
Lately I dont feel like myself
And I can tell somethings off kilter
In my mind and I am not my myself

Sinking through my life Im in slow motion
Breathing in again Im out of time
And I wish I could paint my emotions
So you could see my inability to paint in the lines

And if I could run away I would run away if I could
but I've got no where to run to
and if I could run away then I would run away if I could
but I've got no where to run to

And I can't breathe easily
If I could sketch it for you, youd see
I struggle to breathe easily
If I could paint my emotions youd see

I feel disconnected from my skin
I can trace it with my fingers but nothing
I can see the beauty around me
But it fails to translate into anything

And if I could run away I would run away
but I've got no where to run to
and if I could run away then I would run away
but I've got no where to run

I can't breathe easily
if I could sketch you the inside of my mind you'd see
and I can't breathe easily
if I was a painter
if I could paint
if I could paint my emotions you'd see

Your haunting delivery really brings these lyrics to life. I really like how the chorus flows and I love that closing verse.

This is a very good song.  :)

Hi @Alex , I am listening right now. What a great singing voice! Fragile but powerful. On your SC page I wrote that it reminds me a little of Edie Brickel. That is absolutely meant as a compliment.

Really nice.  Your singing is wonderful and your lyrics are captivating.

My admittedly old-school nits.. I'm usually not a fan of repeating identical progressions from verse to chorus but that is the style of a lot of music these days. You do it well by really mixing up the cadence of the melodies in the sections. Add to this that it's pretty much a 1+1 and it's really hard to create larger motion in the song. For those reasons I think this one would be served by an arrangement, I.e. drums - percussion loops, pads, etc. - all things that help to define form.

@Alex Sometimes music is what's not there rather than what is there. There's a wonderful balance to this piece. And you have an incredible voice; I could listen to you all day...even without accompaniment. Anyway enough waxing from me. I don't hear much that would make this more perfect than it is.

Thanks @Leonard Scaper (currently listening to your "Would a Dime Make a Difference" - so lovely!)

Thank you @Dutchbeat

Thanks @Pleudoniem, and thank you for introducing me to Edie Brickel, I am v inspired by her voice and her image!

Thank you for the feedback @M57, I totally agree this would suit accompaniment. I find performing my songs live in my bedroom on my laptop mic more enjoyable as I am not so technical, and it allows me to write and then enjoy performing, but I totally understand that an added depth would enhance my music, and am trying to improve.

Thanks @adamartist , and @Olbigead  :) :)

Reminds me a little of Fleetwood Mac's 'Dreams' I think it's called. A lovely song you've got there.

You would sound so wonderful accompanied by piano or cello. This so reminds of me of something long forgotten or remembered in a past life / within a dream. You do paint pretty vocal landscapes within the mind.  Lovely as always, big fan.

~Rich
We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams;
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems.
