Reworked an old song for the violin
on: February 16, 2020, 01:16:22

"Took a Walk Through Your Mind" (originally  "Dirty Things")

Lyrics:

If i could open my arms, i'd wrap my arms around you
Hurry little one, you're out of time. I've told you before
Whether you're wrong, how you look is what they're looking for
All they hear is how you sound. That's what I've found.

Now I'm reading all the dirty things you've written.
Yeah.

How much breath was wasted? Am I coming through?
How many thoughts took a walk through your mind then dropped to the ground?
What they feel I'm sure is purely sensual--even all of those pithy intellectuals

Do you think they're reading all the dirty things you've written?
Are they reading all the dirty things you've written? Yeah? No..

Oh and how many times have you buried your tears in a notebook of fears and hate
Oh they'll seep through the page and fill you with rage once they trickle on back to you

Having read all of those dirty things you wrote
After weeping over your short little note
I'll be keeping all the dirty things you've written
All those dirty things.
All those dirty little things

Ha @Rewboat  - nice to meet a fellow violin player... if that is what you're playing there, or does it have an alternative name? Cool nonetheless!
For the song - that made me wonder - what is the title? "Took a Walk Through Your Mind" or ""Dirty Things""
The vocals in the higher register have a really evocative quality - Jeff Buckley comes to mind. Do you know him?

Questions, questions, I know - if you have some time to follow up on them, it 'd be much appreciated!

Hey @oorlab i remember someone comparing my vocals to Jeff Buckley many years ago on a very different song. Is there a particular song of his you can recommend to compare? I didn’t hear the similarity before

As far as the violin goes, it’s a six-string electric violin called “the Viper” made by Mark Wood.

There’s an old version of the song called “Dirty Things” which is slower, fully produced as a ukulele-based Smiths song with Four Freshman harmonies. I sped it up, changed a few lyrics and changed the intention/ intended audience in an arrangement that’d allow me to play solo with the violin.

Absolutely fantastically enjoyable performance! Seriously.....you own that instrument and you own that song.

@Rewboat  - in your track around 1.13 m - where you go up, with the sort of falsetto - that has a cool Buckley vibe. One song of his that comes to mind is Last Goodbye https://open.spotify.com/track/0y5CnV2idm2KkQEudDjfDT?si=cK-1Wm4wT-uZxD0NHR7t6w but any of his tracks give this vocal style.

@Rewboat I knew there were fretted violins, but I'd never heard one being played on. A bit like @oorlab, this aroused my special interest, because I am (also) a bassist who also plays on the standup, and bowed. If there's one thing I've learnt about bowing, it is that keeping those pizzicatos steady is quite a task. I am not sure if it is the way your amp sounds, but you play mostly double stringed notes, don't you?

It's quite a nice job you did there, and yes, Jeff Buckley's voice springs to mind.
Pleudoniem: composer; bass guitarist; guitarist; singer; drummer; tap-guitarist - o, and yes... erm- a bit of keys. Open for collabs.

ah @oorlab I hear what you mean. those vibratos are probably the culprit! I'm looking deeper into his work now. There's a lot of really good 90s stuff I missed out on.

@Pleudoniem thanks!-- Yeah my technique here is equal parts country fiddle (double-stops and alternating single notes), baroque style (they used curved bows to bounce them on all of the strings at once to play chords), and sloppiness (perks of happy accidents).

I also get an extra bleed from the reverb on my amp (good ear!) so the sound doesn't become too empty.

As someone who follows you and watches all of your videos …. even when they completely warp my mind …. @Rewboat …. and have questioning my sanity.    :D  …. I gotta say this is crazy awesome!  :ok:   Nice to occasionally see you doing something a little bit more normalish … and it's good!  :)

@Dutchbeat @Mo @LePlongeur thank you! I know... it's been a while.

@Bill from November Sound You've been so encouraging since I started this morphing project, (And a good sport for coming back!) Your encouragement throughout has made me feel like I'm connecting, which I've started to realize is what makes a song or a performance powerful
