Working on this
https://soundcloud.com/oorlab/road-to-zanzibar-wip-13-12-17/s-TXU2e
Still in the writing phase - so no definitive mix. This recording was done yesterday evening and already I hear some things I'd like to change.
So any feedback is appreciated
cheers
Dick

My first reaction is that I love how you have the vocals coming out of the distance a bit. I like everything about this tune, from the cool beat to the changing moods throughout.......it is like a journey.

You might just tighten up that ending somehow.
"The main thing is to have a gutsy approach....but use your head." Julia Child

"In a world of robotic conformity, the only originality left in music is the imperfections" Eric Craptone

"Special thanks to Steve Gleason for making me who I am today." Leonard Scaper

@Leonard Scaper  - Hi Leonard, thank for your quick reply. Will work on the distance of the vocal.
The ending (as the beginning) is just unedited - no intention to keep it like that. I was thinking about using may be some Zanzibarian singing found footage, but I don't know if that even exists.
Cheers
D

A charming laid back number. Reminds me in parts of Bowie's late 60s catalogue, bit quirky and offbeat. I am sure you will polish it up well - but not too much polishing please.

Yeah, probably the ending sounds like work in progress for now, as @Leonard Scaper mentions. (Edit: sorry our posts crossed!)

But very nice already!
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

Ow yes @oorlab , that sounds fantastic.. The voice is perfect in the mix, love the round bass.. Sounds very 'live', but I think I've made that comment on more of your tracks.
This track (as an entry in your beautiful collection of tracks) is my fav so far. Wow!

Thanks @Mar T.  , @MichaelA  , @Leonard Scaper  (+ non-members Mark Hoogslag & Cees Budding) for comments on the demo version.
here is a new version:

https://soundcloud.com/oorlab/road-to-zanzibar
I redid the drums - to keep the groove more going, edited intro and outro, and Cees suggested some new lyrics. The whole of them are posted on soundcloud.
This song is not actually about Zanzibar but about travelling to that far away place. If it is reached, who knows. I actually checked a route planner by typing in my home town and Zanzibar, and lo & behold, a route was given. The placenames Oran and Akadez that I mentioned in the text are from the route.
Given time, I hope to make a videoclip for this song. Some fine creative commons footage of Zanzibar and the Moroccan desert to be found on Flickr.

@Dutchbeat  - cheers! Bounce indeed is a good word for this swaggering drum part :-)

@Vince  - indeed - I saw parts of that while looking for possible video to reuse. A trailer is on Archive.org - but I think not out of copyright

Listening through the competition entries and this entry had really got me interested - great groove and nice mix on the bass and drums @oorlab - somehow reminds me of C Moon by Wings, though it's nothing like it - it makes you want to listen over and over again while still sounding fresh.

Love this one @oorlab  :) It's uplifting, yet kind of quirky  ::thumb:: I love the bouncy bass and the accordion, if that's what it is  :-\
Some really nice little instrumental additions throughout and I your vocals sound perfect  ::heart:: Great entry  ::Suzy::

very cool song, I love the space that you have created in the mix, those drums sound like they are in my flat! I agree with that person on Soundcloud who made the Talking Heads comparison.

@CrystalSuzy  - thanks, yes - it is an accordion (VST softsynth version from Halion / Steinberg) that sounds quite realistic in the middle regsiter.
