Hi guys  ::headphone::

This is a Swedish folk punk song that I wrote quite a long while ago, and it took me until now to make a decent recording and finish the lyrics.

Plz, if you may, let me know what you think. I’m aware it has some room for improvement.

It's name in English would be "Oh Sun" and there is a rough translation following the Swedish lyrics:

Oh sol
---------
Verse 1:
Oh sol, min sol
Oh lys på ängar och marker
Om kvällar och nätter
Båd sommar som vinter

Lys över skogen
Lys över vattnen
I ljuset av dagen
Räd oss ifrån mörker

Oh sol, min sol
Oh lys in värme i kalla vrår
Från köld vi din frälsning får
Av dina blida strålar

Högt över världen
Din värma på färden
Giv oss en morgondag
Och res oss efter natten

Vers 2:
Oh sol, min sol

Lys i mitt anlete
Ditt sken i vårt arbete
I vinden vi känner dig
I våra andetag

Rough English translation:
Oh sun
---------
Verse 1:
Oh sun, my sun
Oh shine the meadows and fields
In the evenings and nights
Both in summer and winter

Shine through the forest
Shine on the waters
In light of the day
Save us from the darkness

Oh sun, my sun
Oh shine your heat into freezing nooks
You save us from the coldness
With your gentle rays

High above the world
Give warmth in our travels
Give us a tomorrow
And resurrect us after the night

Verse 2:
Oh sun, my sun
Oh shine the meadows and fields
In the evenings and nights
Both in summer and winter

Shine through the forest
Shine on the waters
In the light of the day
Save us from the darkness

Oh sun, our sun
Our land you've now drenched in new life
Your light has healed the wounds of time
All with your tepid heat

Light up my face
Shine on our work
In the wind we know you
In our breath

Those guitars really set this one up perfectly at the beginning. This is such a strong song. The percussion and the guitars carry it perfectly. It definitely has a folk feel and a punk feel........and that is not something I have even ever heard before.

Thanks @Leonard Scaper and @Kellyanneg for listening and giving such wonderful feedback.  ::headphone::

Re never heard: When I came up with the melody all I could hear was the folk part of it, and at the time there were still a few popular artists in Sweden doing similar music, but that was long before the streaming sites emerged. When I made a song of it (in early 2017) I had a local punk group in mind but they showed no interest in it, didn’t fit their style I guess.

Perhaps it’s time for some new songs in this genre but with English lyrics this time?

Glad you both liked it  ::e-guitar3::

Like it a lot.
Specially the sound of the guitar.
Their losss, that they didn’t show any interest.
Keep them coming friend.
Kind regards, Gus

I like this a lot @Layerson which is not surprising as it’s combining two genres I love. Interesting hearing it sung in Swedish - not something I hear a lot but it has a lovely lilt to it which works well with the folky melody I feel. Great stuff!

OMG @Layerson ... I love this!
This is such a cool style for you.
You are really stepping your production as well.
I'm putting this up on Twitter today!

Thank you @LePlongeur, I’m very happy you mentioned the guitars.  :) This was a GarageBand production initially and I used 8 tracks of guitars for this one. I’m gonna have to keep a copy of this project as a template, haven’t been able to match the exact sound, even now that I know more about audio production, so the song arrangement is pretty much unchanged apart from the vocals which I did retakes on with the added lyrics.

Thanks for the very kind remarks @Zedd  ::headphone::
I actually thought about letting Stan have a go with the lyrics but by now I’m certain this song would lose something in translation, but next time I’ll try a similar genre song with English lyrics instead.

Wow, I might be a little lost for words... @Bill from November Sound
English isn’t my first language and “thank you” doesn’t really cut it, I’m a bit overwhelmed... Thanks very much :)

Together with all these positive responses about the energy gets me inspired to do more of the same thing. :)

Yes @Layerson , thanks the spirit!
Let the €10.000,00 per speech Americans try to give us guild/guilt with their slogans.
Yes, myhglass is half empty!
And as long as I I enjoyed it, are you telling me that i’m nuts?

The same with the comfort zone.
Looks like it’s the comfort zone because you are doing something you love.
Like the guitars.
Let’s celebrate that we do and hear things we love.
And let them speech somewhere else!!!

The silver toned guitars carry the song. And I love it to bits!
It is really brim full of possibilities that sound. Great find.
Kind regards, Gus

Hey @Layerson - I'm liking this and I'm getting a real Pogues vibe from this.

One thing I'm not sure about is if the Vox should be coming in at 14 seconds not around 30 seconds.
I  just think it would make it a bit more punk in some ways by getting on with it. Otherwise the intro does drag on a bit.

The longer run does work better at 2:30 because the listener has already had the bulk of the song by then.

Trust me to come up with a small critique of what is a very good song.

Good Job

Uh I'm not sure what this means @LePlongeur but suddenly I feel compelled to throw about some halfwitted American slogans: Go for the gold! Always give 110%! Keep it simple. Just do it. I'm lovin' it. That's what friends are for.

And, some smileys as well:  :) :D ;D  :shinyteeth:  :bonk: :doublebonk: :ok:

Thanks and a good point there @MrBouzouki, I’ll try shorten the intro, see how that works for the song. The introduction isn’t all that varied either, so you’re spot on.

This is possibly one of my favorite songs so far that finally has seen the light of day. I was so serious about it, I even bought an electric violin and I’m trying to learn how not to get it to sound awful, but it’s taking me to long to master so I went with the midi ones instead (or rather I kept them in... for now....)

@LePlongeur I’m not sure but I guess that was in part rhetorical. No, you’re certainly not nuts, I am in my comfort zone with this song and if I can’t transition the next song into singing it in a foreign tongue without sacrificing the overall sound of it, it’s gonna stay natural and native when I do stuff in this genre. Appreciate your view on this and to be honest, my singing is sounding completely different when it’s in Swedish but still it’s even more exotic to do this genre in English, so I’m curious to as if I can get it to work.

Still trying to figure out what genres I’m going to do more music in, but so far this one has rendered the best critique and maybe it scares me because it feels so much more intimate to sing in my first language, anonymity is gone in a way. You guys are experimenting, sharing it here and always give constructive reviews and that strikes a note in me I will let ring out to it’s full length.

Thanks to all of you for being who you are, being supportive and honest. That’s plenty of fuel for my fire.  ::Note::

Re the vocals @Layerson - why not try using Swedish AND English in the same song.  ???

I've heard Irish artists singing a verse in Irish and then in English so it's not an original idea.

@MrBouzouki now why didn’t I think of that? Excellent suggestion, I must try to keep that in mind :) (now I feel stupid but that’s ok, it’s easy to go blind and miss the obvious...)

Hi @Layerson
Wonderful song, it's full of strength, I can imagine voices giving energy and taking energy singing together!! The reason for these songs is always the same, the union of hope to get the light that guides us all. You have made a perfect symbiosis of folk spirit and punk.  ::thumb::
