Song for review: Bring It On
on: July 02, 2018, 00:54:03
Hey all,

This is a song that I put together a few months ago and set aside, since I was having trouble singing some of the notes right and writing lyrics. I'm thinking about giving it another shot, if it is worth it. So that's what I'd like to ask here. If you think there's something here worth investing time in, and can give me some ideas on where to start, that would be most appreciated. I'm looking for frank feedback - I do this strictly for fun, and I enjoyed making this song, so I'm already satisfied. Everything from here on is icing on the cake :)

P.S. - It is rather long - the first 1 1/2 minutes are enough to get the flavor.

Thanks!

Hey.....it feels good. It moves nicely and has a great positive message. That main synth sound feels a little dated to me but then this is not my genre so maybe it's more of a retro feel.

I think you should work it a bit more. Work the vocals up for a more dynamic feel maybe. If you're having fun and still feeling the song then definitely stay with it.

Hey @EdZ314 , I think you can still make something of this. You probably still need more of a "hook" that can be repeated/people can sing along with. (btw- Maybe try putting lyrics up in the lyric section of the kitchen.)

I think if you're going retro then go all out retro. This is too much of a mix of modern and retro in my opinion. Maybe @Dakoda could give you some ideas 'cause he does this #nu80's style in a cool way.

But.... maybe you should try the "future bass" genre. I could imagine your melodic idea being chopped up to fit in this post Drum n Bass/ Dubstep style. I actually think it could really work well. That being said, I have barely a clue as to how to make that kind of music and I only know the genre because I have a teenage son.

So, yeah, I think it can be good if you want to keep going with it.

@Bill from November Sound, @Leonard Scaper  -

Thanks for the feedback - the comments are very helpful. I never thought about the way it has an odd mix of retro/modern and focusing on a hook. The lyrics are a bit of a mess, but I will certainly post some if I can get them into a coherent form. Regarding Future Bass, I have never heard of it but there are sound pack add-ons in Garageband for iOS which I think are related, so I will check that out. It's really interesting to hear how these tracks sound to others - it's very easy to get attached to your song because it's yours, but if you want to create something for performance, it's all about how it the song resonates with your audience, so this is great insight.

@Dutchbeat -

LOL  ;D Thanks for the kind words and the support! Yeah - the structure ... oh man the structure .. that is the thing that kills me on these tracks. It's so much easier to just lay down a beat and a loop and let it run from start to finish and just throw a melody on top of it, but it's the structure that tells the story right? It's what takes you up and down ... and then yanks the floor out from under you and you are like yeah, more, more ... Anyway thanks - I totally get it.

Hi @EdZ314 , here's one where I think you have a good initial idea, but maybe need to develop it quite  bit so there's more variety and more melodic interest. I see it is a private track for now, so guess you are still working it up. Others have given you some good pointers too, so good luck with shaping it up.
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!
