Song recorded using new stuff
on: April 02, 2017, 17:24:08
https://soundcloud.com/vincentaylor/star-bright

Hello all, Everyone was so helpful at the end of last year with suggestions about gear and software. Especially @Mar T. & @Jurgen. I wanted to share my latest mix. Hopefully,  you'll hear some improvement from my beginning recordings on my 4 track Tascam with the built in mic. I bought an Audio Box computer interface. Although Jurgen recommended Reaper, the Audio Box  came with Studio One artist.

This is an old song of mine that I recorded and mixed with my new stuff. Sorry it's long it's the only one really over 4 minutes.

I'm just sharing it  mainly so you can hear recording progress.  It's 3 guitar parts, 2 acoustic and one electric. I use heavy gauge strings on my guitars.
Since it's so long I'm not expecting anybody to listen to the whole thing.

Words. (Already posted in Lyrics)
I saw a star shining so bright
That it broke through the city lights
I closed my eyes and made a wish
To make it through the night
Not for silver or for gold
That is selfish I am told
And I don't need another hand to hold

And now a mad dog is howling at the moon
I don't mind, but it's always the same old tune
It's always sung the same
About life and love in vain
Sung in his drunken midnight reverie

And the Blue Girl has the shakes again
She needs some more of her medicine
Soon she'll go cross town to see her special friend
I'm not a Prophet, but I know how it's gonna end

And I wish things wouldn't be this way
But, it's how it is and I guess it's here to stay
Nothing here is true
Except the love between me and you
And I wish we could somehow get away

There was a man out standing in the cold
He was a mean one, or so I am told,
Until the cops put him out of his pain
His legend still remains
Only his blood is left to get washed away by the rain

Star light shine bright tonight,
Shine down on us as we are mired in our plights
The stars are angles up above
We could use a little love
As we go about our lives

And now a mad dog is howling at the moon
I don't mind, but it's always the same old tune
It's always sung the same
About life and love in vain
Sung in his drunken midnight reverie

And I wish things wouldn't be this way
But, it's how it is and I guess it's here to stay
Nothing here is true
Except the love between me and you
And I wish we could somehow get away

Thank you all - Vince

Wow @vincent_stewart , that sounds way better than I'm used to compared to earlier work you posted! A difference of day and night!

My main suggestions would be:
-Center the vocal in the mix
-Pan 1 ac. guitar track a bit to the left, and the other ac. guitar track a bit to the left

Wow great to see you've invested in some gear, man you're going to love recording now!
Cheers, and thanks for sharing!!

Thx. @Mar T.  - I was hoping you would be pleased. It should be easy enough to make the changes you suggested

I definitely listened all the way through. This is a good song.......

So you are recording with the built in microphone? If so...it is not doing justice to your strummed acoustic guitar. That, means, of course, that your next major step will be a decent microphone......I'm assuming that Tascam also has a preamp built in, though.

Sorry......but welcome to the world of home recording.  8)

@vincent_stewart of course I meant 'and the other ac.guitar track a bit to the right'.. Sorry!!
Yes I was very pleased, but that's not what it's about isn't it? Were you pleased yourself?  ;) ;)
I hope you'll like what you hear when you apply my suggestions, and of course I hope to hear them here!
Cheers my friend,

Thanks @Leonard Scaper  - well this all started when my wife bought me a Tascam 4 Track recorder with a built in mic. Before that I was just a closet bedroom player. I've been writing songs for over 40 years that I just played for myself during my practice sessions.

Well, I discovered Sound Cloud and started posting my recordings. I'm not kidding when much to my surprise I discovered I didn't totally suck (but my recordings to some extent did).

Well @Dutchbeat came across my SC site and invited me to take a look at the kitchen. I've learned a lot from the posts of all the talented and sharing people on this site. Once someone asked if they could tweak one of my songs and asked for the stems - I didn't even know what stems were  ??? ;D (no fooling)

Anyway, thanks for reading this far - I now have an interface for recording on my computer - two real microphones - Studio One software - which drives me nuts - and 40 years worth of stuff to record to keep me out of trouble.

Thank you so much for your comments.

Vince

40 years is about right for me as well. Good for you to be recording them now. I think you'll find that recording really helps to keep things fresh and new.

Thank you @Mark Luto , it is a noticeable improvement. Now I'll probably have to work hard to get better recordings with trial & error and benefiting from the fact that the members on this site have already had their trials and errors and learned from it.

btw, @Mar T.  I knew what what you meant.

Thanks so much

Hi @vincent_stewart

yes that sounds good, it sounds clearer than the recordings on the Tascam 4 track

nice singing style that is intermediate between singing and spoken words, sounds good to me  ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb::

Hi @vincent_stewart

This is sounding great - such an improvement.

Good songs are good songs of course, but having some decent equipment and some recording/mixing knowledge make good songs even better. We don't have the chance to hear you live so it's great that we can get a better quality listen to your songs.

The big difference to me is in how your vocals sound - richer and fuller.

Nice song! Keep them coming

cheers

@vincent_stewart This is a very compelling song and lyric. In fact, the lyric really grabbed me. The guitar is perfect underneath it. And your vocal style is raw and perfect.

The song works. I frankly am a bit in awe as you don't really add much layering or build as the song goes along over many verses, and yet my attention is still gripped. That is quite something to achieve just playing a simple set of chords, you singing one line and adding one guitar? line on top.

I am not saying the song needs more because it doesn't. I could listen to the present version as it is over and over.

I am saying if you ever decided to do more with such a beautiful and simple structure, I can hear more overdubs to give even more color as each verse progresses.

I am in the studio after a long day out in the world and listening to this again. I agree that the way you are singing this song with the playing is captivating. There is serious emotion coming across.

Wow @Olbigead  & @Leonard Scaper  you guys have really made my day!

It's just a rhythm acoustic guitar Key of G, my electric guitar with the capo on the 2nd fret playing an E chord for the G, etc and to add some bottom I used my acoustic again for a little bass. I don't think any song of mine is ever really done - so as I record more of my stuff and learn more about recording I'll probably have to redo some of them.

Once again I can't thank you enough for letting me know how much you enjoyed it.
