Spellbound
on: November 20, 2018, 22:58:07
Personal songwriting challenges sometimes gets me into new areas and keeps me awake.
This one  was "can you write a Bond theme song?"
As close as I will probably get, and bearing in mind I`m no Tina Turner, here is my attempt.
With my oftimes collaborator Scott on the Gretsch.

     Spellbound

truth lives in the myth
dies in the details
you soar when they fall apart
there are no rules to your sport
you want everything
and a witch to stir the sin

she serves you the Elephant Train
at her disco in the desert
her Rolex Commander
she throws your phone in the river
now who needs a safe house
sweat darkens her blouse

spellbound spellbound
in her magic eye
the moth burns the moth burns
in her mind

bom bom
boomelay boomelay boom
bom bom
boomelay boomelay boom
bom bom boom

talking in your sleep
in a room of laughing monsters
she calls herself Oblivion
you`re on the rim of her cauldron
they didn`t train you for this
the cure for a kiss

spellbound spellbound
in her magic eye
the moth burns the moth burns
in her mind

bom bom
boomelay boomelay boom
bom bom
boomelay boomelay boom
bom bom boom

Hi @robertkc , that was a creative songwriting challenge you set yourself and quite a stretching one too.

I think you have delivered the thinking man's, more introspective Bond theme. Some great imagery in the lyrics, as usual, such as the burning moth and the desert disco.

I like how you had it all falling away at the end, instead of going for the full on Bond climax. The chorus is a definite grower, and this whole arrangement very subtle and wonderful in so many ways!  ::thumb::
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

I really like this. That Gretsch is perfect for this production. This is way more than Bond, though.

I like those vocalizations in the middle followed by that crisp and soulful guitar solo. Who is doing that cool high voice?

A lot of interesting and mysterious imagery here.

Really fine vocal. Great tune!

Great vocal and guitar sound. The nod to James Bond is great too. I'd maybe bring the vocals up a bit to make them stand out a bit more from the guitar but hey what do I know. Good work mate.

@MichaelA ‘s thinking man’s Bond is so bulls eye formulated, that I don’t dare to try and better that.
And the high voice? Let me guess:
Ms Moneypenny lies on the desk that Q invented. James decided that (well, someone has to do it) to take advantage is the most human way to keep her happy.  And yes, why not. Everybody’s busy blowing up power plants (better than Robert Plants) so they’ve all the time in the world.....

Nice touch with the Gretsch again, in short, I like it very very much.
Kind regards, Gus

I realised early on my voice wouldn`t go along with the mega Bond chorus- subtlety was a second choice! Thanks for your positive comments.

@Leonard Scaper   Who is doing that cool high voice? If you mean the female vocal after the chorus, its a loop  & old so not sure who. Chorus harmonies are me except for the highest voice which was done with the harmoniser in a DAW.
I really appreciate your approval of the vocal - not my regular style & fun to go for bigger sound.

@realkevm  Thanks for giving this a spin -I`ll check the vocal levels.

@LePlongeur  Ms Moneypenny lies on the desk that Q invented.James and Moneypenny?!?... that`s always been off limits, or off camera as I recall. I`m glad you got into the spirit of this.
Will pass on your  :ok: to the Gretsch operator.

Robert

Hi @robertkc  .... this is very good. I really like the melodic content as the intervallic relationships do exude mystery to me.
Nice singing. Nice guitar work.  :ok:

The only thing that I question even remotely is the drums.... but.... we all do what we can with what we have.  :)

Overall, really good show! Keep making the songs!  :)

@Rightly  I appreciate the positives on lyrics.
@Lane Thanks for your listen.
@Bill from November Sound  Its nice to hear my effort to put some tension into the melody worked.
I`ve never done an all- electro drum song before- I do like the beatbox thing going on, otherwise its all disco to me!
