Anybody who knows me a bit might know I'm currently doing another orchestral track in my "The Wheel Turns" series of orchestral pieces based around the four (temperate) seasons.

The words that inspired it :-

Spring

The waiting is over. The Winter chill recedes and there is a tacit acceptance to the demands of birth and rebirth.
A sign of fresh green poking through the ground is a welcome sight, a simple signal that all will be well.
Very quickly, in a sudden rush, there is life in the hedgerows and the sound of birds heralding a new season.
One of life and growth and warmer days and rainy times, but overall a feeling of hope.
You have longed for this moment, a chance to put away your Winter clothes and feel the sun upon your face again.
The riot of change will continue as the life-giving sun takes longer marches through the sky.
Spring of all seasons is a time to revel in simply feeling alive.

P Goodrich - January 2021

I thought it might be interesting hearing a rough-mix of it as it stands at the moment. I think I've got all the basic thematic elements in place now.
As always feedback is always appreciated but please be aware of my things to fix list below.

Replaced with new feel and WIP mix see below

My notes from SoundCloud

Very clunky but a basic shape is in place now. I'm quite pleased with the thematic elements.
I added Marimba today to go with the Piz Strings to denote April Showers
It still sounds light in places and although I want a light feel I do need some grounding too. That might come out better when it properly mixed as I have some bass instrument in the mix.
Some of the dynamics are quite wrong. Way too much reverb on the Timpani and there is too much of them. I have got an orchestral placement though that I use for all this type of stuff.
The brass towards the end is too strong I need to mellow it down.
I love the Alto Flute and use it so much in my compositions. Maybe because it reminds me of the Alto F whistle that I have.
I like the answering call bit at the end ... it gives me the feeling of birds singing to each other in the trees.
Right at the end the brass hopefully denotes Summer to come.

I listened and had to come back for another listen. Itís too far away from my earsí (apostrophe?) expectations.
But now Iíve become accustomed to it, I think I can value it more and more.
I think itís almost too beautiful and filmic to be true. It is what you coined yourself, I think. The bottom is missing. And a good bottom (without implying more than just what is said) carries the music more often than not.
What puzzles me is the missing other kitchenerís posts.
Could it be that itís not as easily accessible?
Keep on keepiní on, said Curtis Mayfield. And I agree.

Kindvregards, Gus

If this is just a work on the way to completion, I love to hear the final version. My God, you're some talented composer. Chapeau!!

You say it best (you say it best) when you say nothing at all @Songwriter16 ?

I like this silent treatment a lot. Assuming itís not intended this way.

So finally a break through with Spring after throwing elements of it away. I was struggling with a certain section of the piece, but now I have it beginning to sound like I wanted to it to sound. Gone are the drums, the marimba and other bits of stuff that was adding nothing.

I really didn't want this piece to be at all 'dense' with too much weight in the sound. It needs to feel light and airy like the season itself. Winter has a lightness too, but that is a more a cold, thin, almost austere lightness, it almost needs to feel like a fairy could dance to it. ;-)

Anyway, onwards and upwards with my new secret weapon, the concert harp ;-)

Hopefully an updated mix will be available soon :-)

Updated mix ... I'm finally pleased with how this is coming together.

Quote
I feel I'm finally getting somewhere with this one.
Ridding myself of the weight from this track was key. I wanted a light feel and it shouldn't sound like Autumn, or Summer, both weightier seasons IMHO.
I didn't need bottom-end, I needed more focus in the melody interaction and there was a missing link. It needed to be light and airy and what else says light and airy like the harp.
After about a day working on the harp part it's starting to give the feel I want.
I also added Bb Clarinet doubling the Bassoon part and they play together nicely. Also one is panned left and one right by the same degree and it makes a nice timbre as a result.
Still more to do but the proper shape is appearing now.
Still not fully mixed or mastered yet

Some basic automation and level balancing now, I realised I was barking up the wrong tree with this one.

Hopefully the April Showers section is better balanced with the Pizz strings

Then I wanted to bring in the harp to keep that lightness of touch before the end of the season with a bit more mellow brass coming in, more warmth and hinting at the theme for Summer.

I'm finally a bit happier with this one

...and update again.

I've been really working on this one as it just hasn't been right but now the harp is in place it's finally a piece of music.

A bit of automation in place but it's ready now for proper mixing and mastering.

Thematically it won't change but hopefully I can make it sparkle  ;D ;D ;D

They should have hired you for The Sound of Music and have Julie Andrews sing the words to it :) Nice piece of work this, dreamy and slow like wondering through a valley. And yes, it's most certainly springtime :)
Pleudoniem: composer; bass guitarist; guitarist; singer; drummer; tap-guitarist - o, and yes... erm- a bit of keys. Open for collabs.

Thanks @Pleudoniem ... well I've tidied up a few loose ends and mixed and mastered it so it's finally finished.

Quite a journey in the end. Just Summer to tackle at some future date for the complete set.
