The Great Escape
on: February 20, 2019, 21:22:03
Hi all... I'm currently working on a track called "The Great Escape".

https://soundcloud.com/jbfalken/the-great-escape/s-LPII7

The link above is a rough export of the production so far... it only has reference vocals and it isn't mixed or mastered, but this is my chance to get some feedback before I track vocals and we move to mixing, so your feedback is welcome :)

Warmly,
Jeff

Sounds pretty good, Jeff. I'm listening on small speakers in my office. The only critique I can offer is to watch your bass instruments when you go into your choruses as it sounds a bit crowded down there in the basement and that's competing with your great vocals. Nothing you can't handle during mixing I'm sure.

This is definitely a dynamic production and it's working well so far with how you are singing it.

Thanks Dutchbeat and Leonard for sharing your thoughts; it's very cool you took the time to listen.

Hi @jbfalken  I like where you're going with this. Obviously you'll have a lot to do when mixing still ... so I guess you're looking for non-mixing concerns?

If you still haven't solidified how you want the vocal melody to be then you might consider making the chorus a little less wordy or changing the vocal rhythm slightly? It's your song and I like what you're doing ... just to me that " the great escape" phrasing/rhythm is slightly jarring... If you could get it to flow a little smoother then that might make the hook a little more memorable.

I'm no expert at this.... what if you removed words? What if you slowed out the syllables over a more extended rhythm?
I wish I had better advice giving skills.

Now I'm looking at the lyrics after typing the above thoughts and really the lyrics are perfect the way they are. On paper they really tell the story and they tell it right.  :)  So, yeah, maybe just experiment with the phrasing and where you put the emphasis a little before you do that singing thing.  ;)

I'm looking forward to hearing the final product!
This is a great line. Very relatable!
"Sometimes I miss it all
The comfortable feeling of being so normal
But now that I've listened to the call
I realize I never was normal at all"

I wish I were normal.  ::)

Good show! Keep it going!
