The Linden Tree
on: February 27, 2020, 12:17:50
Another song from my current project, The Winterland, inspired by Schubert's Winterreise and written mainly on mountain dulcimer. In this song the traveller is remembering how the linden tree affected his life.

The Linden Tree

I slept under the linden tree
The dreams I dreamt concerned my fate
I slept under the linden tree, by the garden gate

I took my knife to the linden tree
And carved our names within a heart
I took my knife to the linden tree, so we’d never part

A magic tree, a holy tree
We used to dance beneath its boughs
A magic tree, a holy tree – its rustling calls me now

At night I wandered past our tree
‘Though it was dark, I closed my eyes
At night I passed the linden tree, stifling my cries

The branches rustled, calling me
“Come on in and make your nest”
Its branches rustled, calling me: “time to take some rest”

A cold wind blew right through my soul
My feet trod firmly on the track
A cold wind blew right through my soul – no time for turning back

The linden tree is far away
My heart still trembles, full of fear
The branches rustle, calling me: “find your comfort here”
Today I'm only one day older. Do you think my hair's turned grey?

This is such a timeless sound and form. I like how you subtly build the sound as the song progresses and then pull it back to bare bones at the end.
"The main thing is to have a gutsy approach....but use your head." Julia Child

"In a world of robotic conformity, the only originality left in music is the imperfections" Eric Craptone

"Special thanks to Steve Gleason for making me who I am today." Leonard Scaper

Really loving the mood this song introduces and the added soundscape effects in it are spot on.   :)

The build up is great, especially when the base kicks in after a few verses. Maybe I wouldn't have included the "wind" effect again later and gone with something that made the song bigger, but that is an artistic choice and this version works well too. :-\

But still, it's a great song, with awesome lyrics and a top-notch arrangement/production too.  ::thumb::

Thanks for your comments @Leonard Scaper  @Bill from November Sound  and @Layerson . I'll let you know if there's ever a video - I can't do them myself but sometimes a friend will help out.

Great song @redmando love the story and the vibe.

The Kitchen now has a BandCamp account and songs are being suggested for a compilation album.

I really like this...It has an old alt 70's sound....Vox is in the cut, mellow delivery fits perfect

The rain sounds I could probably would do without.  If you gotta have maybe only the intro & outro? ..It's distracting especially halfway through, just way too loud...You can have tastly elec.guitar on this too.  But it needs to be played a certain style

Where's the flute?

Thanks for your critique @SteveAlton . You're right about the rain/leaf sounds - my ears aren't too good these days and I don't always hear some of these frequencies when I'm mixing. The song was part of an album project written and mainly played on mountain dulcimer. So probably no to the elec guitar, but the flute? - that's a definite maybe!

@redmando  - good to hear this song, resurrected on the forum. A flute could be nice for such a tune - but hearing it just now iyt already sounded quite complete. :pompom:
