The Moth and the Flame (Another American Pie)
on: July 18, 2019, 13:37:24
This song is about broken people learning to love.

https://soundcloud.com/ashbordeaux/the-moth-and-the-flame/s-r7HUN

This is just a demo of verse 1 and chorus  ... a work in progress.
But I have had it completely worked out in my head for quite some time now.

I'm working on a more full duet production with a female vocalist and more instruments.

I like this kind of country @AshBordeaux - you have   interesting lyrics started on the song ( would like to see them ) and a chord progression that sounds right for the genre( reminds me of  Lucinda Williams among others).
Can definitely hear those female vocals /duet working well.
Look forward to the next stage of your song.

Robert

It’s a keeper! @robertkc

Most of the lyrics are very clever... I felt an awkward moment, but only once. Maybe post the lyrics for the forum to take a look?

Solid guitar playing... maybe too many chord substitutions? Maybe not! Once this gets further along.

Looking forward to hearing this develop

A bit of a different direction Ash?  I really like what you've  done here so far, The recorded guitar is fantastic.

 :ok:

Hi @AshBordeaux

I do not remember you singing before this style of song!!!  ::thumb::
Nice track and very good guitar sound!!! It's a classic. The cadence of the rhythm catches you since the first chord sounds.

But...if you post the lyrics I could understand better the song.
Female voice? Yes, it could fit wonderful.  ::thumb::

@Mora Amaro La Loba @robertkc @Vince @1roomstudio

Your feedback is much appreciated!!! <3 <3 <3

Vince - I tried a mid/side recording technique on the guitar, in addition to using a DI, so the guitar is mic'd 3 ways making it nice and wide i think.

1roomstudio - I have been wrestling with the chord prog so it's interesting that you mention that... I was also concerned that jumping straight into those "substitutions" you mentioned on the second part of the verse might be too much too soon. Or that there might be a more elegant way to do it.

Robert - I haven't thought about Lucinda in a while -- that's a good reference - thanks!

I agree with @Vince that this is a different side of you. I like it.....but I can hear the Ash Bordeaux I have come to really love lurking just beneath the surface. That comes out a bit, btw, in your vocals at around 1:10.

Solid tune....definitely a keeper as @1roomstudio says. I think the section between :55 and 1:09 needs a little massaging, though.

This is great @AshBordeaux - really nice song.

The intro sets this up really well and I like how your voice starts building throughout the song.

Can you post the lyrics?

Look forward to hearing this when you complete it, especially if you add a female vocal to the song.

cheers

Thank you gentlemen.

Next step -- finish demo of complete song so I can get it into Sarah's ears, so that we can record her.

Okay @AshBordeaux  ...I'm just listening to this now. Well because you titled the post "another American Pie" and, well, I thought I needed to block out a good 12minutes in my schedule to listen to it. :D ha,ha ... thankfully that wasn't the case.
You have the makings of a very cool song IMO . I really like the use (or misuse  ??? ) of aphorisms and various old sayings as lyrical material. This to me us cool. "You break it, you buy it" "There's a hole in the bucket" ... good stuff!
You ever get to perform this music live up there In VT?
Anyway, looking forward to your updated version of this when it comes out.
