EDIT
Uploaded a demo:
https://soundcloud.com/michaelheider/the-silent-h

Just (more or less) finished this one.
I've had the concept for the song and a line or two for about a year, but have only recently started working on it again.

A little background about the lyrics:
I've spent two years working abroad and this song is about the language barrier I've encountered (Didn't speak the local language at all in the beginning, now just a little, and almost nobody outside work spoke English or German...)
The title is an allusion to the last line of the pre-chorus, and to the French language and its tricky pronounciation (well, tricky for me at least  :D ).

I'd love to get your thoughts on this.
The arrangement for the song is almost complete, and I think the lyrics could do with some polishing before I go and record the vocals :)

The Silent H

Verse 1:

Crossing the border
You couldn't see the narrow line
No change apparent to the naked eye

Welcome to Babel
Ask for directions, if you can
You'll need some guidance in this foreign land

Pre-Chorus 1:

So here you are now
You're almost there
All went according to plan

But when you look back
You will remember the day
The day the Silent Age began

Instrumental Chorus

Verse 2:

Lost in translation
You haven't spoken in a year
When will your journey end? It's still unclear

What were you thinking?
You built your tower way too high
All you can do for now is nod and smile

Pre-Chorus 2:

Just keep on listening
Don't say a word
Who knows what you might learn?

Here's a solution:
Why don't you simply...
Enjoy the silence

Break

Bridge:

Consider this a break, and not the bitter end
If you listen closely you will hear me sing again
Speak up, if you dare! You know you can still win, my friend

Maybe one day soon I will sing to you in flawless French
And that's the day the Silent Age will end

Instrumental Chorus

Aha Michael,

Great to see you back and great to see you writing again :)

It's a good set of lyrics and a good subject, the fact the word age and H sound similar add a nice element of confusion , did you mean to say silent 'age' and not 'H'?? Pardon, can you repeat that?  :D

By the 'silent age' are you referring to the time there spent unable to communicate?

Like being lonely in a room full of people, very good..

Looking forward to hearing it :)

The Silent H - Added a Demo
Reply #4 on: October 27, 2014, 23:32:12
Thanks a lot, you guys :)

@ habi: Yes, it's about precisely that, not being able to talk to people about the simplest things..

Well, I just couldn't wait, had to record the vocals today and produce this first demo:   The Silent H

Musically this started out as a kind of experiment for variable time signatures, it repeatedly changes between 6/8, 7/8, and 8/8.
I think that makes the song sound a bit weird, but I'm so used to it now and quite glad to 'finish' a song of my own, it's been a while.

NOTE:  Could one of the admins maybe move the thread to the ideas section? I don't know how to  ???

Very very good songwriting.

and me again  ;D ;D, i know i get accused of to much repetition, but some more repetition towards the end of the hook (that is the day the silent age will end) would work for me, or just as sthe last sentence, one repetition to end the song on: "that is the day the silent age will end"

would work for me  :) :) :)

I really really like this..

Are you guys all doing all this at home? I have to say you have magnificant production skills, Michael..

I really liked all that was going on this.. loved the piano piece particularly when it comes in after "...simply, enjoy the silence..."

Can I ask (as a complete novice) how much of the instrumentation is "real" and how much is midi / other synthesised? Please excuse my ignorance in asking such a question but I'm very interested.. I'd love to know in other mixes the same if it's not an intrusion..

Love it!

Z

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words :)

@DB: Cheers, that repetition at the end sounds like a great idea! So to not end the song with just an instrumental part. I'll try that

@Zedd: Most of the instruments are real. The drums are of course programmed on a virtual instrument, and so is the piano, recorded via MIDI.

Excellent yet again Michael, such a cool song, I really enjoyed that. That quiet piano solo was so cleverly done, less is more. I can't find fault at all, the instrumentation was great, the vocals were great, really really good  :)

Please do more songs  ;D
