Their eyes were watching god

Here's a partial song I recorded and happened to find on my phone. It was written by a friend, Robert Welch. It did not have any music so I wanted to see how it would sound with The Woodrow Instrument, basically a dulcimer, held like a guitar. Four strings with the bottom pair doubled up and tuned to D-A-DD.

Since I haven't posted anything since entering into the kitchen, thought I would share.
It's only a snippet of the song.
Comments are welcome good, bad, or indifferent.

Mahalo,

Pat

Their Eyes Were Watching God
Lyrics by B. Welch

When I'm alone and afraid
too scared to sleep and close my eyes
I hear voices desperate crying out
there's nothing left inside
I've been told to imagine heroes
all the shame and hell they met
but I remember everything
I always needed to forget

What in heaven or here on earth
was ever worth the trade
Given keys to paradise, then break a promise made

Sounds good @Kolohe  and well worth sharing the whole song. The melody has a little of Will The Circle Be Unbroken- familiar and suiting the style.
Hardly ever hear a dulcimer these days- I like it.

This just sounds SO GOOD! I love the sound....your vocals and where they are in the mix......and that seriously cool Woodrow instrument.

It sounded like it would have rung out forever there at the end.

Hola @Kolohe

I sincerely find your song works good like this, it is a classic and the simplicity of a man playing and singing his fears gives a strong image, that's enough.  ::thumb::

@LePlongeur  Mahalo

Mahalo @robertkc I recorded it on the iphone  awhile back and just found it. It was a conversation between the woodrow and the lyrics.

@Leonard Scaper  Mahalo for the kind words.

@Mora Amaro La Loba Thank you for the simplistic imagery feedback.

Hi @Kolohe - this is fantastic.

I love the sound of the Woodrow - and you have a voice that makes me sit up and pay attention.

Both work so well together.

I'd love to hear more from you.

cheers

What a pretty song. A simple, compelling melody,  pleasing vocals, and a lovely instrument. Everything matches the theme.

I was intrigued when I saw the title in the ‘Songs for review’ list, as I’ve just recently re-read Zora Neale Hurston’s wonderful book ‘Their Eyes Were Watching God’.

I like that in lines 7 & 8 the lyricist also seems to reference a quote/theme in the book, although with an ironic – and poignant – twist. Nicely done.

You mention that the song is a snippet. I hope you have it in its entirety.  :)
