This Town

Hi everyone,

This is a recording of a song called This Town  that I recored with my band at rehearsals on the weekend.

It's recorded in one take using a Tascam field recorder so guitars and drums are on one track. I plugged a vocal mic direct into the Tascam as the PA speakers didn't sound great.

There's no monitoring and we couldn't really hear the vocals while we played and recorded. So it's a very basic recording and had some challenges with getting a mix that sort of works when all the instruments are on one track.

The snare was very loud and I've been trying to limit/compress it so that the guitars stand out a little more.

Can you let me know what you think of the song (a song about domestic violence in a small country town) but also how you think it sounds using this very basic one track live approach.

I quite like the idea of live recordings, no overdubs etc. and I'd like to continue with this approach if I can find a way that works.

If anyone is interested, I posted a video of us playing this song at a gig last week on the "live performance" section of the kitchen. https://www.songwriter-forum-kitchen.com/forum/live-performances/10/this-town/5452/

Stand tall and hold their gaze
put his handy work on display

No makeup to hide his shame
he took the right when you took his name

This town's got a lot to say
This town's got nothing to say
When this town sweeps it all away
This town

All these years you hid the truth
every time he left a bruise

He raised his voice and he raised his hand
His way to make you understand

Before the purple fades
Before the purple fades
You've got to make him pay
You've got to make them pay

Hi @Jurgen
Great song to describe a topic like you tell us, something usually hidden behind many windows... Your atypical training of 2 guitars and a battery can also work well, of course. I'm sure that little by little you will get a more "round" sound.
I did not know that to live I had to die so many times

I like the song a lot. Some of the impact of such a powerful song does get lost in this live recording of it.......maybe that is because of the prominence of the drums overshadowing the vocals a bit as you mentioned.

I do like the concept of a live one take recording like that, though. I agree with @Mora Amaro La Loba that the two guitar approach can work fine for this music.

@Jurgen I like the melody and lyrics are a spare  telling of domestic violence. The vocals come across stronger on the one-take recording than the live show ( yes, drum recording could be better on both, as they are a bit lost on the live video).
I`m sure you`ll figure out the tech aspect of live recording - its a refreshing change to hear songs in the raw  ::thumb::

Thank you for listening and your comments @robertkc , @Mora Amaro La Loba and @Leonard Scaper .

It is a challenge not having a bass guitar and making sure the 2 guitars don't step on each others toes so to speak but I'm pleased with how things are progressing so far.

And yes @robertkc I think the raw sound really has an appeal as so much music nowadays so produced and at times a little too perfect sounding.

I like the simple impact of counting to 4 and stepping on it.
You can surprise me anytime with recordings like these.
As Curtis Mayfield said: Keep on keepin' on!
