To Catch A Magpie (Magic Words Challenge)
on: June 03, 2019, 18:27:33
Disclaimer; I already had the song title/idea in my notes before coming late to this challenge... for which I`m grateful as it nudged something along with the magpie as archetype thief and a smattering ( I`m sure there are 5 ;) ) of those magic words.
It was fun to play with the celtic ballad form too... adding a  rhythmic element by using a children`s rhyme.

 To Catch A Magpie

Willow oh Willow
what`s this I see
you kilt your gown skipping
my nemesis to meet
he preens like a vicar
in plumage of black and white
o`ermasters our love
with a mesmerist`s eye

one for sorrow
two for joy
three for a girl
four for a boy

Clem my Clem
remember the day
lilt in her voice
the Weavers Stone where you lay
be furtive not bold
let your tongue be your sword
your rival plays this game
like devil like a lord

five for silver
six for gold
seven for a secret
never to be told

take care take
when you set your snare
to catch a magpie

the Magpie the Magpie
many words little truth
has her soul on tiptoes
on her promise she broods
Clem rushes in
with hailstone of blows
to the gallows not Willow
he`ll soon pledge his oath

one for sorrow
two for joy
three for a girl
four for a boy

the sky shall fall
before that pitiless eye
when love lies bleeding
away flies the magpie

five for silver
six for gold
seven for a secret
never to be told

take care take
when you set your snare
to catch a magpie

@robertkc  ::heart::

When you start listening to it, the first thing that establishes my mind is a connection with that music full of peace and good harmony
The sound of the voice for my taste is very English and I like that
Very nice work

Just love the intro and you sing with awesome expression and emphaty @robertkc  ::headphone::

I love the arrangement, the subtle details and how you have captured the story. Nice and mellow cellos and very relaxing for my ears

A great song that really swept me off my feet and it was even better the second time I listened.

This has to be a contender for the challenge...!  ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb:: :pompom:

I really love the feel of this whole production.  You absolutely capture that Celtic feeling!

That string track (cello?) is perfect from beginning to end.

Your vocals sound fantastic in the mix.

Listening again now just....to listen to the song and feel the lyrics.

Glad this was to your liking @Leonard Scaper . Cello? yes, two tracks ( ballad style & chops for the  uptempo parts).

Very impressive lyrics @robertkc, very poetic.

The song comes across to me as very old English folk and I love the magpie reference and the "one for sorrow" rhyme which I remember from my childhood watching the UK kids program "Magpie" - it's always stuck with me.

This sounds like a pretty strong contender in the comp.

cheers

Great work @robertkc  . very impressive!
I love that transition at 1:30 - you used the magic words to create a wonderful set of lyrics that in no way sounds forced or otherwise contrived. Very thought-provoking, magical and classic as though this song has always been in existence and merely passed from generation to generation. Yet, it is an original work.
Good show!

Thanks for the encouraging review @Bill from November Sound .Its definitely easier to write lyrics cherry picking just 5 words from the magic list, but I still very much appreciate your approval of the song.
