Truth is true
on: September 14, 2018, 22:55:50
« Last Edit: September 15, 2018, 00:32:42 by Mar T. »

Any comment or idea welcome,. This song started with its title, quite unusual for me. The build up and recording of guitars was done quite quickly, but drums and vocals took some time. Still not sure about the reverbs, or lyrics, or mastering - so any feedback is welcome.

Truth is true

There was a miscommunication
just a case of "What do you mean"
But folks were getting angry
needed to let off steam.
Don't think there is no choice
There's always a way out.

Make sadness pretty!
And shyness blue.
Truth cannot hurt you,
as long as you know what you do.
The writing's on the wall
Read & heed the call.

"Truth is true",
that's what the judge said
when he turned his blind eye.

Truth is not a lie
but a reason to live,
Though I couldn't say why.
Pull it through
If I can make it
You can make it too

Truth is true -
if we loose that honey
what can we do?

Hey @oorlab

Well I know you are looking for critiques so I won't be much help to you. Lyrics? Really like them.. your mix questions I'll leave to others but it all sounded good to my ears.. Great playing - liked the keys a lot!

Truth is true? Made me double take but I do like the simplicity of that lyric / title...

Great stuff!

Hey Dick ( @oorlab ), good to hear a new track from your camp!!
To me the mix sounds very nice!
What I like:
-De levels/panning of the individual tracks are perfect imo.
Each instrument clearly has it's spot in your mix, and is individually
-Amount of reverb is just perfect as well imo

Only 1 suggestion:
-Bassdrum only seems to have lows (maybe we should hear the 'click' of
the hit a bit better, that also helps the bassdrum to kick through on
a mobile speaker (which doesn't reproduce deep bass)).

As for the meter in the singing this line caught my attention:
'There's always a way out'. The pause between always and a doesn't sound
natural imo.

Enjoyed listening to this work (Heerlijk!). Very well done, and amazing
that we can produce this kind of quality just in our home studio's isn't
I'd ask @budhabuilding  for mastering tips.

Cheers and thanks for sharing!!

I'm proud of this track, check it out! https://soundcloud.com/martimedia/dreams

I really like what you're doing here. Once again, for me, you've got that Steely Dan vibe going but in your own way.

I'm listening in the studio. Love the guitars. The toms were a bit distracting at around 1:20.....they didn't feel quite right there.

I like where your vocals are in the mix....they ride nicely in the instrumentation. There were, however, a few places where a bit of volume automation could bring them to the fore.

Cool how it started with the title.

The video works nicely...must listen and watch again now.

Thanks @Leonard Scaper , @Mar T.  and  @Zedd  - for the practical comments. Can work with that: will try to change the toms at 1.20 - make the bass kick a bit punchier, and possibly I can change the line "There's always a way out" to fit the meter.

Great sound.... i would make some little adjustments in the mix but not in the sound choice!

- could add a bus or reel compressor on the drums.. it will glue the drums together and make it more in one place.
- one of the toms is just 1 or 2 db too load imo
- there is little distortion in the vocal track in the first few lines
- maybe all the vocal 1 or 2 db loader
- and all the suggestions from the others.

for mastering imo
- eq maybe add some a little 12hz shelf, and low end bell around
- bus or reel compressor some max 4db reduction maybe lower is even better
- limiter just take some of the peaks can be 4db reduction

btw you can buy the izotope ozone elements now for just 1 euro on

it give mastering advice with mastering assistant.
i use it in this way...
If it gives really big adjustment as advice..maybe i should change the mix..

enjoy the work..   :)

I like the song's meandering style, taking all the time it needs to tell its story. An interesting style of instrumentation, kind of 70s retro with contemporary additions, so very @oorlab that I would have guessed you were the artist if it came up on the Snippet Challenge, even if that were the first time I was hearing it.

My personal taste means I tend to look for songs with a memorable chorus employing an element of repetition which I kind of anchor my listening on as I get to know a new tune. Because you vary the lyrics after your'Truth is True' hook line, it took me a couple of listens to establish that hook in my head. BUt others may feel differently. Once it gets implanted in your head, it is a good hook though.

Good video comp too, enjoyed that. I will certainly watch and listen again!
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

thanks @MichaelA  and @budhabuilding  - many thanks for the pointers & tips.
I was happily rerecording and remixing after the other tips... but somehow managed to delete all files in Cubase while freezing the drumparts...
Tried to recover but that resulted in a lot (100 =) files unsupported ...

Have to take my loss and put out the earlier mix on soundcloud now - to get this of my chest :-)
But I will rerecord the whole thing soon and incorporate all your fine advices.

@budhabuilding  - indeed I have the Izotope plugins - and I had them on the master, but I guess my videoeditor and youtube does undo some of the effects.

Just gave a listen.  I like the tune. Agree with others that it has a Steely Dan vibe.  I was particularly enjoying the jazzy piano fills.  I won't comment on the mix because it sounds like you had to revert to a previous version and have some work to do, but I look forward to hearing what you end up with.

Hi @M57 - thanks for the feedback - sure can live with Steely Dan comparisons.

Here is the version public on soundcloud for the time being.
only tip I was able to implement was @Mar T.  's suggestion with the bass kick. I had recorded a new line for "There always is a way out" and edited out the toms... but while saving a version with just drums for editing - I deleted all loose tracks by accident. Cubase sometimes does things that cannot be undone.
No problem - will find some time to rerecord the song (that I rarely do, out of laziness I guess).

Great song @oorlab - loads of quality playing going on and you can hear the instruments really well in the mix. When it started I thought it was George Harrison on guitar - nice! Good drum sound. I love the way the words draw you in to the story.

One (very minor) point on the lyrics - I think you meant "lose" not "loose". This is a common grammatical error which I often see in the newspapers and on tv and it irks me. Obviously it doesn't make any difference when you are singing it, bit when the lyrics are shown on the video it stands out. Sorry for being picky!

I was on Facebook and it popped up in my timeline so it shows putting things up on there works. I haven't had much time to listen to any new tracks on here since the competition finished.

I enjoyed it and liked the relaxed feel of the drums and how it drifts along as opposed to being insistent. I also like the other instrumentation and particularly some little guitar flourishes that just add another layer on interest. The solo is just enough and sounds part of the overall vibe.

I was going to comment on some distortion I noticed at the end of the song but from earlier comments it seems you are well aware and this is a WIP piece.

An interesting piece

Good Job

Very, very nice song  :o :o :o :o :o on a great topic...when i saw the title of the song i was reminded of the recent television interview  of Mr. Guilliani
in which he said: Truth isn't thruth, and gave one of his weird bulging eyes look...a combination of these two smileys together, but then in slowmotion..  :o :o :o ::) ::) ::)

and i was happy to see, it was (somewhat) about that (looking at the picture on the soundcloud page)

Great songwriting! @oorlab  ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb::

@oorlab I dig your writing and arrangement style, and your voice is interesting.
The breakdown is fabulous around 3/4 in.. and the way you came back out of it again to the end.  You'd make a good producer I think. Sure there's lots of things that could be done to the recording/mixing, tuning, etc but that's more on the technical side.. I like your creativity. Trippy.

@Dutchbeat  -  yes , that was Rudolph William Louis Giuliani indeed who spawned my little tune. I guess Rudy is taking Postmodernism to its extremes :-)

@MrBouzouki  - true - in the last part some distortion is in the mix. Hope to fix it in the next version  eventually.

@redmando  - thanks for the tip - much appreciated. I changed loose to lose in the spots where I posted the lyrics. Unfortunately I can't change it in the clip, at least not without totally reproducing the video... but in a next version of the song I will remember "lose".
