Update, due to renewed interest - Moth
on: February 15, 2020, 16:23:40
« Last Edit: February 16, 2020, 00:37:46 by Pleudoniem »
I have one of those professions that shows a great many burn-outs due to periods of excessive amounts of work that could easily be avoided by cleverer organisation management. It is one of the reasons why I kept silent for some time before I released The 14th Parade. I had work to do. Needless to say, it is often working in the red, and at night-time. This is also why I have often been asked why I often send replies after Midnight. One of my answers was that I am a moth. A moth is fragile, it often lives at night and in the shadows.

The song is 5 years old already, but as I am experiencing a sudden boost of interest in it on SoundCloud, I thought I'd update it to a 2020 remix. The composition hasn't changed, but some of the sounds have been (slightly) modified.

It was also one of the first songs on which I experimented with the Ziggy Tap Guitar - it is a much cheaper, but very interesting type of Chapman Stick that does the work just as well as a traditional stick.

In case you're wondering, the other guitar you hear is a Telecaster...

Moth

I can barely bear
The lightness of the waking
Who nervously pursue
Multitudes of things
In far too many ways
While I'm just being slow
At trying to keep up
With a phantom

That knits the light to wires
Weaves them to elastics
Sewing me my coat
That slowly wears me out, so
I'm lingering to wear off
Its fibres in the day
- They'll slowly thin away
And lighten up the brace

Tell me I'm a moth
That needs to spread its wings
In the patchlight of a moon whose
Clouds had been forgotten
To some who called them angels
And some who called them cold
But I'll paint back the blue
With some other hue

As I must carry on, I'll
Say that I am one of you
Charging up my view
With things I need to do
And things that need a fix
All readied for my list
Meanwhile being slack
To fight the phantom

That's beating me to give up
In endless ways on end as
It's humming to my eyelids,
And slowly makes them dance
With hours still to go
Morphing me serenely,
Pounding me acutely
Until nightfall

Sounding good, fitting in well with your other songs. I like the big intro and then the more minimal verses.

@oorlab Yes, the Rolling Stones are quite recognisable, so is King Crimson. I can only hope I won't be as recognisable as Milli Vanilli  ;D

...and you'd heard t before.  ;)

Hola @Pleudoniem

Great and heavy song, depth lyrics, good instrumental, great atmosphere, intriguing, abstract, sometimes dissonant in a jumble of emotions, good work ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb::

@Mora Amaro La Loba You're right about the dissonance. First that bothered me, especially since part of it was due to the fact that I was still figuring out how to play the Ziggy, worse, how to hold it in my hands, so that I could reach all the strings, and where to find all the notes.

But then it dawned that possibly this needn't so bad, as long as the groove and the idea stood firm. After all, give me one moth that flies in predictable ways ;) They move seemingly at random and in great numbers. I decided to make use of my beginner's skills on the Ziggy.

Sounds fantastic to me. Loving the tones you are getting on that instrument and the way you have this song moving. It's a really nice big production.

I have to echo @oorlab 's comment on the bass. It is in a perfect spot tone wise and the playing really moves the song along beautifully. Good percussion as well.

@Leonard Scaper It's been my experience that the type of bass you get is very dependent on whether you start with a bass or a guitar track. In this track, I self-evidently started with the Ziggy, and then added the bass to it. On the 14th Parade, I started with a bass babble. This almost inevitably made me want to make the guitar babble with it in return, which is different from merely sustaining it, as in Moth. This usually makes for quite a different sort of groove.

I agree completely. I always bring the bass into the session as early as possible....but always after the guitar track. I really love playing the bass and I can generally hear what the bass track will be doing when I am tracking the guitar.

You definitely got it right on this one.
