So So SO excited to unleash this on all of you :)

Here is the entry that Michael and I have been cooking up for this friendly/unfriendly(?)/ruthless/drunken/unruly competition:  https://soundcloud.com/rabid-parrot/voices-over-coffee-original-song-by-michael-heider-ft-lyrics-and-vocals-by-rabid-parrot

LYRICS:
As always here are the lyrics (songwriting notes follow for those interested in how a song like this gets written).  I'll defer to Michael to offer other personal and technical insights if he chooses:

"What's her name?"
   Voices over coffee say
The sun is bright in my eyes
   Still punch drunk mesmerized

   Late night, long walk
Skipped the cab, you and i
   Short skirt, loose tie
You said that it was cold outside
   Don't wait. Don't think
         "Lets not regret this thing"
   Street light, park bench
        "Let's forget everything"

"What’s her name?"
"How can you not know her name?"
She said it just wasn't one of those important things
"Let's make a deal and be anyone else now"
   "What does that make us?"
        "Come on let's find out?"

   Late night, long walk
Skipped the cab, you and i
   Street light, park bench
You slipped your hand in mine
   Daylight whispers
   "We're almost out of time"
         “Promise me you'll miss me?"
(Every time I close my eyes)

   What did she see?
   Where does this go?
Why did she choose me? How will I know?
Was she running away or was she meant to save me
   I started to ask
   She laughed
        "shhh. shut up. let's go"

"What's her name?"
   A grin gives me away
   I said I don't know
   "Maybe she forgot to say?"
Looked at the back of my hand
"Is that permanent?"
   I smiled and I shrugged at a heart-shaped drawing
   "Yeah It's permanent enough"

   Late night, long walk
Skipped the cab, you and i
   Street light, park bench
You slipped your hand in mine
   Don't wait Don't think
   "We're almost out of time"
        "Promise me you'll miss me?"
(Every time I close my eyes)
   That night, one walk
Just when things don't ever change
All I know is I'll never be the same
Memories still warm before they touch the ground
"When can i see you again?"
        "How does now sound?"

The first opening is meant to sound like post-all-nighter sitting in a diner or coffee shop surrounded by friends who wonder where you went the night before - the word "coffee" should give it that "morning" feel.

Then it bursts into the memory of the night before and how it started as a physical attraction ("short skirt, loose tie") to hopefully capture that instant attraction feeling that everyone has had before but as the song progresses it shifts to understanding more about the state of the guy (the idea of him wearing a "tie" and being very ordinary and routine) and how he was basically drifting through his everyday life and that this person has completely up-ended this.  The chorus of her saying "let's not regret" and "let's forget" shows that urging and coaxing to get him to loosen up.

The second verse of "what's her name?" brings us back to the present almost like his friends catching him daydreaming and still not answering.  The line of "she said it just wasn't one of those important things" is the first hint of the influence of her free-spirited nature (how the vocal melody changes and strays outside the beats a bit).

The second chorus throws us back to that night introduces a bit about her - "promise me you'll miss me" hints that she is needing something from this encounter too.  She needs to be missed and wanted, to be anonymous but also to have an effect on someone - just as she wants him to loosen up and forget the rules.  She is a catalyst that also benefits from this in some way.  It ends with his internal confession that he does miss her ("every time I close my eyes").

The bridge is the place where I usually open up a link directly into the heart of the song.  It's this guy who questions where this girl came from and why - why did she pick him and what did she mean this all to be.  Never able to loosen up in his life and always constrained.  As this bubbles up to the surface, he's interrupted with her "shh, shut up!"

That's where the story arc completes - he is back at the diner and staring at his hand where she drew a "heart-shaped drawing".   This time, his coy reply to "what's her name?" is "i don't know, maybe she forgot to say" shows that she did change him a bit - that he has changed, unlike his friends who are still obsessed with details and the formality of things.   The play on words of "is that permanent?" relating to the marker drawing and "yeah, it's permanent enough" about him admitting that she has changed him.

The ending lines of "when can i see you again?" and "how does now sound?" was meant to be a flashback of the night as well, the playful teasing of the idea of living in the present and not worrying about what that future is.  The image of him asking if when he can see her again and her covering his eyes for a moment with her hands and then opening them and saying "how does now sound?" was what inspired the lyric.  Still, it's also the only answer that he now has after that night and it echoes on bittersweet.  It also wonders aloud if such a spontaneous moment could ever happen again.

I love that songs can be interpreted by the listener however they choose to hear it, but I hope this offers an interesting look at the how I approached the songwriting piece.

I've known Rabid Parrot can Sing (with a capital S) - but as someone who can just barely find the on switch, this stuff really amazes me. A truly enjoyable song and insight into the mind a Rabid Parrot.  ;D   ::thumb::

In this competition one song is not better or worse, they all all different. Hope I get a lot of votes to spread around!

Very impressive @Rabid Parrot and @Michael!

It's also interesting to read your ideas behind the words - I agree that the listener/reader will have their own interpretation and I think that's an important part of writing, but it's also good to hear the writers thoughts.

This competition is going to be fierce!

cheers

OMG @Michael and @Rabid Parrot !!
I loooove this entry! Fantastic instrumental Michael, and what a voice
Rabid!
I love all subtleties... the vox in the background shouting, that recurring guitar lick,
that korg...
I love the dynamics in the arrangement (quieter parts and more busy
parts alternate quickly and draws the listener in the song)
What a beautiful melodic chorus!
The mix/production sounds awesome to me. Congratulations on this result, I
enjoyed this one a lot!!
Off to add your entry to the Love Song OP guys!!
Karma incoming!!

great vocal @Rabid Parrot ...really nice sound
when your voice goes up in the chorus to sing that: "late night, long walk" bit, that reminds me so much of.......mhhhh...I think.... the singer of REM

anyway, I put a like on soundcloud on this  ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb::, oh and I will throw in a repost as well... ;D ;D ;D ;D

The beat part about working with an instrumental as layered as this one is that i had so many vocal choices and wanted to weave with and against some of the swells to create a sort of emphasis on certain words and moments in the song.  The more i listened to the instrumental, the more i wanted certain parts to remain without vocals to really let the music paint the picture.  The incredible thundering keys on the low end and the crazy little runs were so precise and just perfect.  It amazes me how Michael put this together as there are so many layers and directions you can add or go and in some ways he had to avoid putting too much in or it would start to sound cluttered.  Instead, it is a crazy balance of sounds that just fit, and even moreso the parts where they all come together at the end of the choruses.  I tried to capitalise on those parts by punctuating the lyrics.

Wow @Rabid Parrot and @Michael,

Totally impressive achievement. I was totally impressed.

As a lyricist, when I first read the lyric, I had my doubts about whether the narrative could be pulled off... it's complicated. But I didn't have any difficulty following when I heard the song.

Great vocals.
