Went To Church On Sunday

This one is self-explanatory on the surface but it has some hidden meanings. This is what happens when Leonard Cohen is your favorite and most admired songwriter.

Went  to Church On Sunday

Went  to Church On Sunday
In a state of grace
Just another sinner
In a holy place

I went looking for a miracle
I went looking for a break
I went looking for the truth
From a liar and a fake

Butchers building alters
For sacrificial lambs
Justifying murder
And other Christian scams

I only heard about miracles
Never had an even break
When truth is an illusion
Belief is a mistake

Can't  blame God for nothin
It is all his will
Finding lots of loopholes
In though shalt not kill

Then on Easter Sunday
There rose a rabid bat
The priest performed a miracle
He pulled a rabbit from a hat

Can't  blame God for nothin
It is all his will
Finding lots of loopholes
In though shalt not kill

I only heard about miracles
Never had an even break
When truth is an illusion
Belief is a mistake

Went  to Church On Sunday
In a state of grace
Just another sinner
In a holy place

I went looking for a miracle
I went looking for a break
I went looking for the truth
From a liar and a fake

I only heard about miracles
Never had an even break
When truth is an illusion
Belief is a mistake

Belief is a mistake  Take Take
Belief is a mistake  Take Take
Belief is a mistake   Take Take

Went to church on Sunday
Went to church on Sunday
Went to church on Sunday
Went to church on Sunday

Qu bien! @CGHound
The introduction is very preparatory to the story.
The relaxed rhythm suits the lyrics, which are very harsh, and the melody is catchy, repetitive and melancholic.
I liked the organ in the parts in which it appears
I was glad to see that it was not only a lyric but a song.
Stay safe

Well @CGHound
there is so much in this song ... examining what happens when faith, desire, greed and materialism collide.

Living in the UK, I have no real idea all of the power of the church in America, but I've probably heard enough to get this song.

Again, since I live in the UK, and don't understand all this Second Amendment stuff, (no offence to American members),
i find the following lines quite chilling.

Quote
Can't  blame God for nothin
It is all his will
Finding lots of loopholes
In though shalt not kill

A clever piece of songwriting so I'm glad you posted it up.

@CGHound  - good songwriting going on. if you'd rerecord or remix it, I would lower the drums, or put less effects on it. Just a small mix-tip.

The lyrics have a bit of Dylan-taste (totally subjective, I immediately admit). I liked this line especially
"When truth is an illusion
Belief is a mistake".

When I wrote it it was inspired by the Catholic churche's sex scandals, power and cover ups and then I found that clergy in the Bible Belt were far worse than Catholic priests.

As to the 2nd Amendment,  I support it but I'm not a gun nut. The gun nuts, and there are alot of them never quote the complete text which is, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." They only quote the part in italic. A well regulated militia is each state's National Guard. The problem is, most gun nuts are too unfit mentally and physically to cut the muster to be in the National Guard so instead the dress up like soldiers, run around in the woods with their assault rifles with fantasies about overthrowing the government.

A lot of Americans hunt a lot have guns for personal protection.  Different states have different regulations. Some are IMO too strict and others too loose.

The US is divided into two groups. People who understand facts which are known as moderates, progressives and liberal and the other group is for lack of a better word depraved.  We are in for big trouble here. The depraved are calling for violence and they have been committing act of violence. The US allows crazy people to have all the guns they want.  That's scary.

There are a lot of people who want a theocracy. And the sane people want seperation of church and state. The battle still is North vs South. The South is still fighting the Civil War. The South is the "Bible Belt" and the Bible belt is the most unholy place on the planet. The collective IQ there is low. They thump their Bibles but never read them.

I think you live in a more moral country.

Right. It needs a remix.

Religion has been used to keep people from thinking.  Some people will tell you that truth is whatever people believe.  I think Christianity got Romanized  it became in many ways a force for evil. Evil lies.

A wake up call to re-think what we believe is always a good thing.

Totally focused writing is this I think. Hat (Hats) off.

While thinking about remixing, I would suggest to brighten up the backing and mix down the 'drums'. But apart from this, please prepare the next one.
@CGHound
Kind regards, Gus
