My entry for the challenge about Misunderstandings.
And what misunderstandings are more killing than the ones between men and women?
'Nuff said.

For now: Enjoy!
Kind regards, Gus

Whiplash II

Apart from the age old discussion
about the up or down toilet seat
empathy is the way to your heart
like slow food, yes, it can't be beat

Apart from the age old discussion
that I leave my socks lying around
I understand that's a nuisance
but enough to get depressed or down?

Bridge/lift
Who says that a man can't listen
as good as any woman can
I have practiced like crazy
still happen to think that I'm a man

Chorus/refrain
I nod understandingly: yes yes yes
how tiring, children at the creche
oh, all that yes yes confirmation
's enough to give me a whiplash

Apart from the age old discussion
that a man aims at quick results
does he sniffle or snore quite a lot
sings bawdy songs with adults

Apart from the age old discussion
of we agree to disagree
the quickest way to get her in bed
is a mug full of herbal tea

Bridge/lift
Who says that a man can't listen
as good as any woman can
I have practiced like crazy
still happen to think that I'm a man

Chorus/refrain
I nod understandingly: yes yes yes
how tiring children at the creche
oh, all that yes yes confirmation
's enough to give me a whiplash

-.-.-.-.-.-

Very entertaining Gus @LePlongeur  and as you say, the eternal 'cat and dog' relationship battles are a fertile ground for this challenge.
Another good entry.

I think this is a perfect song for this challenging challenge, Gus. And you have, as usual, given us a slightly different perspective to ponder. Great music and vocals.

Hmmmmm.....herbal tea. I never even considered that ploy. Thanks.  ;)

I like that modern spirit that this song has
If I had to do some criticism I would focus on the sound of the final mix, although I know it is complicated, I think it could be improved

Congratulations  ::thumb::

I liked the song.  I could notice some issues with the tempo though. Especially at around 1:00. But that's not a problem for now.

Are you a big Smiths fan? Man, if I closed my eyes that was the feeling I was getting. It was nice.

Well done, my friend.

@LePlongeur Yes, The Smiths indeed spring to mind, although there are few who really sound like Morrissey, except he himself. The problem with Mars and Venus is that we all revolve around the Sun.

It's a recurring theme in my songs, so this challenge came in handy.
Said the men/women thing; but meant lovers in general. And friends! It's about the human condition maybe!
And it happens among the best, I think.
Thank you for listening!
Kind regards, Gus

Oh yes, I bet you did consider it. A little bird told me that you even stooped to it! So what, if you do it with flair?
Anything humans can possibly do, we do for love.
And as long as you do it with moderation..... (the herbal tea of course)!

You are absolutely right.
There are plenty thing that go slightly sloppy or wrong.
I am a songwriter.
I go into my bedroom recording room, with a vague idea of the song I would like to make, push the red button and play.

I don't arrange, rehearse, plan or anything. I count to 4 and hit the strings.
Including 15 minutes for the lyrics, the whole process takes 1 hour and some 45 minutes.
I play all my songs only once.

So, you heard right, there enough room for improvement. But not enough time. And I won't complain. The sheer magic of making a new song audible is done.
Thanks for listening. And for the compliments.
And yes, I have plenty Smiths vinyl!
Kind regards, Gus

You are right. The revolving keeps it all together.
But the Marie Claire, Cosmo, Flair, Viva people make a living, highlighting the differences rather than the things we have in common.
There's so much good music around. I'm proud to be influenced by the best.
Kind regards, Gus

I am glad you entered @LePlongeur , your quirky yet atmospheric input is just what this Kitchen needs! Yes, you woke me up from my Christmas alcoholic haze.

Another great riff here underpinning the melody.

I bet many of your previous songs could have entered this challenge too as the theme seems to suit your music so well!

But there's lots to enjoy here, well done and hope your whiplash is not too severe, ;D
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

As I only entered a couple of days ago, I've yet to find out who also decided to do that.
I know that there were only six or so brave enough to do it, which made me change my mind. 6 entries is no challenge, of course. I feel partly responsible as my misunderstanding with the language of flowers is at the heart of this challenge.

So without VST (or something like that - don't know what it is, let alone that it is impossible to download and use it on my gear) but with hammering the message home rhythm guitar. My guess is, that my entry is too far off what people expect to be too successful.

And, thank you for your concern, my whiplash is better already. The doctor said:
It doesn't matter if you nod yes or shake no, as long as you use your head.
And thank you @MichaelA for your time and post.
Kind regards, Gus

@LePlongeur  Your lyrics cover a lifetime`s experience ... how else could you write this in 15 minutes!
Inspired  opening with the toilet seat issue
I think you nailed the intent of the contest ...and I for one very much enjoy your crashing guitars, one-take brand of music.

Robert

Thank you @robertkc , for your kind post.

The mentioning of the time invested is not to portray myself better or better than others.
It's out of necessity, and because (over time) it suits me. Hope you won't think I'm lecturing you! That's not my intention.

Many things in my life, I enjoy most when there not too much thinking involved.
Or talking for that matter, but I really hope that people give working this way a try .

I write in a stream of consciousness. Of course, if I'm unconscious I can't write. So: In the Netherlands we call it automatisch schrift, where schrift means writing. When you have a clear picture in your head you want to describe, automatic writing works like a dream. Put your pen to paper and write with as little involvement as possible.

I try to develop this way of working for English lyrics too, but I am still not satisfied with the results.

Another thing is that there's a difference between biographical work (where the I - person is present) and the autobiographical work where the I is really me.
My work is biographical. Truly.

Only yesterday I wrote a song named: Lena
Part of the lyrics:

One of the waitresses is called Lena
desperately wants help with the rent
we'll meet each other when her work is done
on the beach next to the tent

I put my arms around Lena
she's Czech so she doesn't understand
want to fuck like crazy, Lena's great
the beach is heaven, 'cept for the sand

It's only a story.
If it were half true, the missus would go crazy in seconds.

So, in short, Whiplash II is a story, in which I exaggerate the differences between men and woman.
And I say long live the differences!

I see and hear all kinds of people struggling with their lyrics or music. It's (I believe) a myth that we should suffer for our art. I don't believe that for a second.
Being creative is having fun too! And if you're having fun, chances are that it 'betters' the creativity.
Only my opinion.
I hope you'll give it a try. There are more than enough stories in you!
Kind regards, Gus
