Whiskey On The Hurt
on: February 04, 2019, 21:09:12
Got me a flea market Levin mandolin then went to see A Star Is Born and ended up with this, go figure.  ;D
Inspiration is a strange beast indeed.  @Zedd  helped turn my lyrics ideas into proper English.
Don't let the gentle start fool you, guitars are coming your way
All and any feedback welcome.

I've had it with the world
Turned my back and walked away
Tired of trying to pretend
That the hurt has gone away

For some peace of mind
I would sell my soul
For some peace of mind
To forget it all
For some peace of mind
As I wait for sleep to fall
I pour whiskey on the hurt

See me standing in the rain
Head thrown back to wash the pain
From eyes Iíve emptied of my tears
From silent screams that no one hears

For some peace of mind
I would sell my soul
For some peace of mind
To forget it all
For some peace of mind
As I wait for sleep to fall
I pour whiskey on the hurt

There's a conflict I embrace
That pain I fear, seek to erase
The hurt, at least it makes me feel
Should I push that final shot away from me?

For some peace of mind
I would sell my soul
For some peace of mind
To forget it all
For some peace of mind
As I wait for sleep to fall
I pour whiskey on the hurt
Let man's petty nations tear themselves apart
My land's only borders lie around my heart

super song! @Jambrains - love the tinkling piano, and mix of everything. I wonder how it would work if you'd lower the reverb on the vocals...
Cool drumming. Was it played or programmed? It sounds real enough.

Great song.....seriously. I knew it was a Jambrains song as soon as those excellent drums started things off.  ;) I actually love the vocals as they are.......your performance has a cool range from aggressive to downright sensitive.

Love that piano ending.

Two things stuck out for me, though. I think that mandolin can come up appreciable, especially at the very beginning. It sounds very cool but I had to listen for it. I would get bold with it to make it stand out against those typically excellent guitars.

And...those toms felt too up front, particularly at around 2:26.

Seriously good song all in all. I can hear that @Zedd influence. You guys are good for each other.

Whiskey on the hurt ---
I think about it and given my tremendous and hypersensitive imagination, I got goosebumps oughhhhh!!!

Coming back to the song, I liked it, classic and very well built. I love the chorus  and the phrase
"For some peace of mind
I would sell my soul"
it disarms me ... the image of exhaustion by the suffering that draws is overwhelming, whether or not it is fictitious.

Good song @Jambrains

I love your soundscape and your lyrics .... and very cool riffs incorporated with the classic 'Jambrains'-sound.
...and I dig those drums very much :D

btw - I like your song title choice and even the display picture accompanying the song.
I really enjoyed listening :) Thanks for sharing!

Hi @Jambrains
I like the new song very much.
And only hope that the lyrics are an exaggeration of how you really feel.
To be hurting is awful. But to be hurting and drinking is to be hurting twice.
We are not here to please to public, but I hope you donít mind my plea for a more positive one next time.
Or is it time for me to pour whiskey on the hurt?
Kind regards, Gus

@oorlab: thanks! Usually not using much reverb on vox but for this one I found it appropriate. There is actually automation on it so it's more of it in the chorus and less in the verses. The drums are a mix of sounds and midi EZDrummer2, JamxStix, and Steven Slated Drums mixed, matched and edited.

@Leonard Scaper; tnx for taking the time to listen and comment. The mandolin was more up front in earlier mixes but in the end I wanted wanted it to balance the guitar on the other side. The toms may indeed be a tad loud :-)

@Marcus Nalgaber: thanks you!

@Mora Amaro La Loba: thanks for the kind words  :)

@Rachel_D:  thanks!

@Dutchbeat: thank you for all the nice emos :-)

@LePlongeur: thanks you and don't be worried about me. I'm a very happy and sober guy who just happens to like to write less happy songs  :)

Wow @Jambrains ... this really connects for me .

Maybe the introduction of the mandolin did it but it adds a new element that I really like . Can I also say your singing is excellent on this too.
The light and shade in your singing on this one is really very good. I totally believe every single word you sing.

The spaces you use in this track are also just the right length to get the listener to reflect on what they have just heard.

I love the piano play off at the end.

I really would think about taking this track around and trying to promote this more widely. I reckon it could be quite successful if you did.

You always produce good tracks but this is a 'Magnum Opus' in my opinion

Nice One

Jambrains you have come such a long way since I remember listening to your earlier material. This is so well done.  Sad subject though. Congrats on such an achievement!

A very good offering, as usual.  Has a High Hopes/Pink Floyd vibe.  I am forever jealous of your superb recording skills

This is my first post/reply on this website ;D, but the vocals are very clear and sound really great. the song has a powerful feeling especially when the music stops before the title line 'i pour whiskey on the hurt'. Catchy and is going to be stuck in my head :)
