Dear fellow songwriters,

I hope this is the right thread... I am really, really proud to present you our first "real" album" called "Winter" that contains the best 12 songs from our first three collections January - March. I have finally released it through Bandcamp, Spotify, Amazon, iTunes... All songs have been remixed, remastered and sometimes completely rearranged (e.g. "Beautiful").

Bandcamp: https://junemay.bandcamp.com/
iTunes: https://itun.es/de/xprDlb
Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/6Q0BiS3fd8fsU741fpHEM4

I know that likely you will not have the time to listen to the complete set (which is ~40 minutes of playing time) but in case you find time I'd highly appreciate your comments on the compilation, the mix and so on...

*EDIT*: And here is a teaser version of the album, only 5 minutes long ;-)

https://soundcloud.com/june_may/winter-teaser-listen-on-itunes-spotify-and-many-other-services

Two side comments: I kept the name "JuneMay" after following the discussion in a separate thread (thanks for your input) and I will also write a bit more about my experience and research on the process of getting music to Spotify... in another thread.

All the best,

Fabian

Hi Fabian, well the good news is that I found you in 'search' on Spotify! I only had a few minutes earlier but managed to only skip through the first three tracks for now -  but the first thing that struck me was the clarity of the production, and especially how Carina's voice just cut through like a knife. A very lovely knife, don't get me wrong  ;D I will definitely give this the listen it deserves later in the week when I have a bit more 'me' time! I'm expecting lots of classic songs and polished productions after that brief taster!

Well done on actually achieving the creation of a whole album and finding out about publishing it - then even better actually doing it. Kudos man!  ::thumb::
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!

OK Fabian, well I have had a proper listen to he whole thing now. In line with my first impressions I think you both should be commended for producing such a polished piece of work with pretty much every song produced and performed to a broadcast ready standard. The sound is very distinctive, so that every song felt like it belonged to you - and if I were to hear a new song of yours on the radio some day, well I would just recognise your signature sound immediately. (I hope that does happen in the future, by the way!)  ;)

Here are my favourite songs from the album:

The Dark & The Light

Good choice for track number one. The Sixties back beat style was somehow reminiscent of someone like Dusty Springfield to me.  Carina certainly pulls of the Sixties diva role here with panache, but then again her vocal polish and dynamic is without question a very classy element to your sound throughout. Great lyrics and interesting chord changes keep it from being a mere pastiche of the past.   I was personally less keen on the guitar solo here, which was a little MOR for me. But a very strong song, and I loved the final chorus with the engaging interplay with vocals and dancing guitar.

Can’t Forget

Simon and Garfunkel sweet guitar picking style, then compelling vocals are the highlight of this interesting narrative song. Once again a very strong chorus – again swooping across a broad range of notes across the scales - I was starting to understand your sound by now and what makes it unique to you.

Counting Stars

The pace drops back again and mellow pianos sit well behind a lovely melody, especially the fab chorus.

Be Still

Really evocative piano riff and instrumental backing track. Interesting pauses between the lines of the vocal. My favourite chorus of the whole album this time, again using this soaring and swooping vocal composition style. Think this one could be a hit. Yes, this one's for me!  ;D

Beautiful,

Synth orchestra breaks up the sound style of other tracks  in an interesting way - so a good interval technique across the album. Bit more of a moodier track, and maybe you should develop this style a bit more in the future - as it is another string to your stylistic bow, so to speak.   Another strong chorus - where do they all come from (!) loved the line about living with the ghost.  ::thumb::

Last Song

A very nice acoustic solo building to the end, very sweet music here – and another chorus feeling like Abba somehow met the sixties!

Well that was a very enjoyable listen and all credit to your songwritng and musicianship, Carina's lovely vocals and your production skills. Very slick offereing and you must both be very proud of this!  ::thumb:: ::thumb:: ::thumb::

This is exciting! ...I'm listening to your soundcloud 'teaser' version at the moment - what a beautiful blend of songs :)
They all sound very nicely produced and as @MichaelA pointed out Carina's voice is sounding pleasantly striking :)

... It's great that you decided on keeping JuneMay :)
I'm really happy for you that you got your first album published - and I love your choice of name - 'Winter' :)
Hopefully you'll get a bigger audience now - more listeners and hopefully buyers as well :) Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

Hi @MichaelA , @Rachel_D

thanks to both of you for taking your time.

@MichaelA : I have no clue what those karma points are but you clearly deserved a karma storm for writing such a detailed review on our songs. Thanks for all your comments and it is great to read what you think about them. For "Beautiful" I fully agree that this is an interesting direction and in fact I did the arrangement only 2 weeks ago. The orignal version is still on Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/june_may/beautiful) but I did not like it so much anymore and rebuilt everything around the piano and strings I had.

@Rachel_D : thanks for your thoughts and great to hear you like it! Buyers and listeners: I will keep you posted what Spotify... bring in the end. Honestly I do not have high expectations. If you do not make it into the playlists that everyone is listening to there will no be too many people who can find us among the millions of songs... Let's see.

Best,

Fabian

Hi Fabian, well the original 'Beautiful' on Soundcloud is an excellent version too. It just shows that if the song-writing is good, then songs can be interpreted in many ways and they do still retain their integrity. I think your re-work for the album just nudges it though as it is more moody and atmospheric. A bold move, given that the original was pretty damn good too, so well done on that one!

I don't know much about 'karma' either. It doesn't seem to be explained very well on the forum, so maybe @Dutchbeat or @Mar T. could do some thread elsewhere explaining this - or link us through to where it is already explained. That would be very nice! Thank you!
